Collectibles are special objects found throughout game worlds that players or sometimes even non-playable characters can gather. These items typically provide various benefits and come in different forms. Some are unique, appearing only once in specific locations, while others appear more frequently but require complete collection to unlock extra content. Banjo-Kazooie follows the adventures of Banjo, a brown bear, and Kazooie, a red-feathered breegull, as they navigate through diverse themed locations filled with challenges and obstacles. The primary collectibles are Jiggies, golden puzzle pieces that unlock new worlds and allow players to progress through the game. Players earn these Jiggies by completing various tasks such as solving puzzles, finding hidden collectibles, participating in minigames, or defeating strong enemies. Beyond Jiggies, players must collect Musical Notes required to open Note Doors and access new sections within Gruntilda’s Lair. In sequel games, Musical Notes were redesigned to function as currency, used to acquire new abilities from Bottles’ relatives or purchase items like vehicle parts and blueprints in Showdown Town. These games also feature different types of Honeycombs that restore Banjo and Kazooie’s health bar, while Golden Feathers enable powerful techniques such as Kazooie’s Wonderwings. Various power-ups enhance gameplay, including Kazooie’s Turbo Trainers that increase movement speed, Flight Pads allowing aerial navigation at the cost of Red Feathers, and Shock Spring Pads enabling powerful jumps to reach elevated platforms containing items.

» Yooka-Laylee Series

In the Yooka-Laylee series, players collect a wide range of items during their journey. The most valuable are Pagies, golden paper-shaped objects hidden throughout Hivory Towers and Grand Tomes. Gathering sufficient Pagies allows players to open Grand Tomes or expand existing ones, adding new elements and structures to worlds. Each world contains twenty-five Pagies, earned by completing challenges and puzzles of varying difficulty. Quills serve as another important collectible. These yellow feathers scattered throughout game worlds function as currency for purchasing techniques or collectibles from a salesman named Trowzer, with two hundred available in each world. Players can also find five differently colored ghostly creatures called Ghost Writers hiding in various locations. Collecting all five Ghost Writers in a world rewards players with an additional Pagie automatically added to their inventory. Arcade Tokens appear once in each world and can be used at Rextro’s Arcade Machine to win Pagies. Health Butterflies function similarly to honeycombs in Banjo-Kazooie, either restoring health or replenishing the energy bar depending on whether they are collected directly or absorbed using Yooka’s Slurp ability. Finally, Tonics are special potions that can be activated to modify gameplay. Most Tonics simplify the game by increasing the butterfly energy or enhancing certain abilities such as Yooka’s Slurp State. Some Tonics, however, impose disadvantages on the player, such as reducing the health bar or removing every checkpoint except one, making it necessary to repeat multiple parts if players fail.
