Collectibles are objects found within the game world that can be collected by either a player or a non-player character. They often bring benefits and may be one-of-a-kind, appearing only once at a specific location. Others may appear more frequently, but they won’t provide a bonus unless all of the them have been collected by the player. Banjo-Kazooie follows the adventures of Banjo a brown bear, and Kazooie, a red-feathered breegull, as they explore different themed locations filled with many challenges and obstacles. The main collectible are Jiggies, golden puzzle pieces that unlock new worlds and also allow the player to progress through the game. In order to earn one of these Jiggies, the player must complete certain tasks or challenges, such as solving tricky puzzles, finding hidden collectibles, participating in minigames, or defeating enemies. In addition to Jiggies, the player has to find Musical Notes that are required to open Note Doors and unlock new sections within Gruntilda’s Lair. In the sequel games, Musical Notes got re-designed and act as the game’s currency, which is used to acquire new techniques from one of Bottles relatives or to purchase collectibles like vehicle parts and blueprints in Showdown Town. Furthermore, there are Honeycombs that regenerate Banjo and Kazooie’s health, while Golden Feathers allow them to cast powerful techniques, such as Kazooie’s Wonderwings. Also, there are various power-ups that the protagonists can use, like white Turbo Trainers, increasing their movement speed, Flight Pads, allowing them to fly at the cost of Red Feathers, and Shock Spring Pads, allowing them to charge up a powerful jump to reach high located platforms that hold other collectibles.

» Yooka-Laylee Series

Throughout the journey in the Yooka-Laylee games, players can collect a wide range of different collectibles, while the most important one are Pagies. These are golden-colored, paper-shaped objects that are hidden in Hivory Towers and Grand Tomes. Collecting enough Pagies, allows the player to unlock Grand Tomes or expand existing ones, adding new elements and structures to a world. Also, each world contains a total of twenty-five Pagies and can be earned by completing challenges and puzzles of varying difficulty. In addition to Pagies there are Quills, yellow feathers scattered throughout the game’s worlds. Quills are required to purchase new techniques from a salesman named Trowzer, with two-hundred available in each world. Furthermore, there are five different-colored ghostly creatures called Ghost Writers, hiding at different places in a world. By collecting all five Ghost Writers, the player receives another Pagie, which is automatically added to his inventory. Also, the player can collect Arcade Tokens, while one can be found in each world and is used to play at Rextro’s Arcade Machine. Beside of that, Health Butterflies serve a similar purpose as the honeycombs in Banjo-Kazooie, either regenerating the player’s health or energy bar depending on whether they’ve been collected by the player or slurped up with Yooka’s Slurp technique. Lastly, there are Tonics in the games, which are special potions that can be activated to change up the entire gameplay. Most Tonics make the game easier by increasing the butterfly energy bar or the strength and efficiency of certain techniques such as Yooka’s Slurp State.
