Old King Coal

Old King Coal is a black pile of living coal that serves as a boss in the game Banjo-Tooie and can be found in the second world, Glitter Gulch Mine. When players enter the Train Station in Glitter Gulch Mine for the first time, they see that the train, Chuffy, has derailed, and the wagon leading to the Boiler Room has become blocked. To get Chuffy back on its position, they’ll need to utilize Mumbo Jumbo’s magic by standing on the pad with his silhouette, which is located in front of the rails. After getting Chuffy back on track and entering it, players discover that the owner, Old King Coal, forbids them from using the train, which he claims Banjo and Kazooie are trying to steal his lovely train. A battle with Old King Coal ensues, during which players must deplete his fifty health points to defeat him. This makes him the second most robust boss in Banjo-Tooie after the witch Gruntilda Winkybunion. After the battle, Old King Coal concedes defeat, handing over his prized train to the players and awarding them with a Jiggy, which is a type of collectible in the game. He also warns the protagonists not to touch anything inside his train while they use it. With Old King Coal’s permission to use Chuffy, players can transport themselves between stations found within the game’s hub world, Isle O’ Hags, or other locations, as well as complete certain tasks in other worlds, where the train is involved. In conclusion, Glitter Gulch Mine and Old King Coal present a challenging obstacle that players must overcome. After obtaining Chuffy, players are able to use it to continue their adventure and complete various tasks throughout the game for Jiggies.

» Battle Procedure

In the battle against Old King Coal, players must navigate around the boiler room while avoiding getting hit and dealing damage to him. Also, Old King Coal’s body has no particular weak points so players are nearly free to use any type of attack to deal damage, including normal attacks or eggs, except for fire eggs. However, it’s recommended to go for Kazooie’s ice eggs, as they deal more damage to Old King Coal compared to other attacking abilities. During the battle, Old King Coal will walk around the room, making it difficult for players to attack him. As players deal more damage, Old King Coal will lose body parts, including his arms and head, becoming faster and harder to hit. At times, Old King Coal will turn up the heat inside the boiler room, causing damage to the player if they step on the hot ground. To protect themselves from the heat, players can use pieces of debris found in the room, where Old King Coal cannot walk on. While the heat is turned up, the room will become filled with toxic smoke, causing the player to lose air. Although, players have one-hundred-fifty seconds in this battle before the entire boiler room becomes dangerous for them. In this case, Old King Coal permanently turns up the heat and gives players only a few more seconds before they become defeated. However, the battle against Old King Coal usually doesn’t last longer than a few seconds, meaning this case actually never happens. After dealing enough damage, Old King Coal detonates himself after a short dialogue, where he allows Banjo and Kazooie to use his lovely train, leaving at the same time a Jiggy behind that they can grab.
