The Great Rampo is a boss in the first game Yooka-Laylee, and can be found in the game’s first world, Tribalstack Tropics. He is situated across a bridge on top of Rampo’s Temple, and players must overcome his fiery attacks to obtain a Pagie. He’s a brown rectangular creature composed of stone tiles, with a special appearance that includes only two visible teeth, with one on the top and one on the bottom. His large orange eye emits a small amount of light and is surrounded by nine stone squares that pulsate in and out while spinning. Bramble-like plant life grows from the top of his body, with moss trailing down the rest of him, while stone-shaped eyebrows complete his distinctive appearance. Rampo is known for his aggressive and malicious nature towards the protagonists, mistaking them for window salesmen when he first encounters them. This triggers a fierce attack mode, where he releases several wooden logs down the ramp to stop them from reaching him. The boss’s name Rampo is a nod to the Banjo-Kazooie series with an “o” added to the word ramp. Once players emerge victorious against The Great Rampo, they will be rewarded with the Slippery Slope achievement, one of the thirty-five achievements in the game, along with a golden Pagie. This will mark players with a significant accomplishment, while allowing them to continue exploring Tribalstack Tropics and find its collectibles. In the game Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, The Great Rampo reappears as a puzzle challenge, which players must solve to gain access to a Tonic that he is guarding behind him. The Great Rampo is found in a cave of the Royal Stingdom, blocking a path of the river. Players must solve a puzzle inside the cave to gain access to a Bomb-Berries Bush, which they can use to shatter Rampo’s teeth another time and grab the Tonic located behind him. Overall, with his unique appearance and aggressive attacks The Great Rampo is a memorable and entertaining character in the Yooka-Laylee franchise.

» Battle Procedure

During the climactic showdown with The Great Rampo players have to prepare themselves for a grueling challenge as he unleashes several wooden logs in an attempt to impede them progress towards him. To successfully Rampo, players must use Yooka’s Buddy Roll ability to traverse the ramp while avoiding the hazardous logs. If players fail to dodge the wooden logs, they will suffer damage, lose a butterfly energy, and be knocked down, while forcing them to start again. Upon reaching Rampo, players will be met with the daunting sight of his fearsome teeth, which must be destroyed with Yooka’s Tail Twirl attack to progress further. However, Rampo will not go down without a fight and will express his displeasure with their actions by blowing them away. Players must once again navigate the wooden logs to reach Rampo’s lair and must continue to do so as more logs are added to the mix, creating a difficult obstacle course. Rampo will then unleash a powerful blast of fire from his mouth, which players must avoid, as getting hit will send Yooka and Laylee tumbling down the ramp. After the fire subsides, four teeth will appear in his mouth, which players must destroy again with Yooka’s Tail Twirl attack to progress to the next stage. After two rounds of tooth destruction, players must evade a final barrage of wooden logs on all three sides of the ramp, making it increasingly difficult to reach Rampo. Players must jump over the logs and can’t roll to the side to avoid them as before. Finally, upon reaching Rampo, players must once again destroy his teeth, and with his defeat the golden Pagie will become available for players to collect behind him. Also, there is a strategic way to make this battle much easier! By unlocking Laylee’s Flappy Flight, players can circumvent the treacherous ramp and logs entirely, allowing them to fly directly to The Great Rampo’s platform. This fighting approach negates the need for players to use Yooka’s Buddy Roll and dodge the wooden logs, making the fight a breeze.
