Jolly Roger, the charismatic frog, is a beloved character in the Banjo-Kazooie franchise. His first appearance in Banjo-Tooie saw him holding the position of mayor in the fourth world called Jolly Roger’s Lagoon, a seaside town where he owned the local tavern. Sporting a blue sailor uniform and bellbottom pants, Jolly exudes a flamboyant and campy persona that quickly endeared him to the game’s fans. However, in Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts, Jolly Roger’s character underwent a drastic change as he retired from his mayoral position, while resurfaced as a sketchy criminal in the game’s hub world, called Showdown Town. To avoid the authorities, he changed his name to Jolly Dodger and donned a more villainous look, complete with a black cape and mask. Despite his new look, Jolly Dodger still retained his signature flamboyance, much to the delight of fans of the series. In Banjo-Tooie, he had a minor role in the game as he was only involved in a Jiggy. The player meets him when he is in a state of depression, having lost his partner Merry Maggie, who he needs for the tavern’s approaching happy hour. Upon Banjo and Kazooie successfully return with Merry Maggie, Jolly Roger rewards the protagonists with a golden Jiggy, and sends them on their way. Additionally, Jolly allows players to rent the inn’s only vacant room for two Doubloons that can be found scattered around the town. However, the naughty mole Jamjars has carved a hole in the corner of the room, making it less than ideal. If players refuse to pay, Jolly reluctantly states that he was hoping they would deal with Jamjars for him. Nevertheless, learning the move from Jamjars is required to further progress through the level, making the effort worth it.
» Jolly Roger in Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts
At the seafront of Showdown Town in Banjo-Kazooie Nuts and Bolts, players can find the elusive Jolly Roger, also known as Jolly Dodger, who offers Banjo and Kazooie Jiggies in exchange for a variety of prices. He can be found in various locations during the night, including under Klungo’s Pier, behind a tree near the Lighthouse, and at the end of a dock near a hill. The Jiggies that Jolly offers have different names, but they all go into his personal Jig-o-Vend, which is located behind King Jingaling’s Bingo Palace. Once players have purchased all of the Jiggies, Jolly Dodger can no longer be encountered in Showdown Town. Also, his appearance has undergone a significant transformation since his first appearance in Banjo-Tooie. He has changed his original sailor outfit to a more eclectic tattered pink coat and top hat. Furthermore, his skin has lightened up, and he now sports a bright, pale green complexion, making him stand out among other characters. But the most peculiar change is that he now has a mouthful of gleaming teeth. In addition to his role in Showdown Town, Jolly Roger appears as the host of various Jiggy-Challenges in the game. He can be found in two of the playable worlds that Lord of Games has created, which are Terrarium of Terror and Logbox720. Jolly Roger’s Jiggy-Challenges provide players with the opportunity to earn more Musical Notes, Jiggies and T.T. Trophies based on their performance. At the end of the game, he appears alongside the rest of the cast to congratulate the protagonists for defeating Gruntilda Winkybunion and being owner of Spiral Mountain. He surprises Banjo and Kazooie by fixing their house, while its color is now pink and white instead of the original blue and yellow.
