Canary Mary is a long-lasting memorable character from the game Banjo-Tooie, recognized for her notoriously challenging races that have driven many players to frustration. Mary is a canary of advanced age, boasting a bright yellow-colored dress and shoes that match the color of her feathers. Although her wings appear frayed and tattered, she is an adept flier, capable of giving the protagonists, Banjo and Kazooie, a run for their money in the races. As a former canary used by miners to detect poisonous gases, Mary’s life took a terrible turn when her former master has abandoned her to die inside a poisonous mine, where she was ultimately rescued by Banjo and Kazooie. After stretching her wings and fixing a mine cart, she invites Banjo and Kazooie to race her through Glitter Gulch Mine, offering a Jiggy as a reward for the first race, and a Cheato Page for the second race. Despite defeating her twice in Glitter Gulch Mine, Canary Mary returns with a new challenge when the duo reaches Cloud Cuckooland, which is considered to be one of the hardest challenges in the game. As a result, many players find it to be one of the most rewarding experiences in the game when they succeed in beating her as she becomes incredibly fast after some time. Following her last race in Cloud Cuckooland, Mary declines Kazooie’s request to race for her worm sandwich and millet, as she recognizes that the protagonists have already bested her and taken her possessions. Overall, she is a standout character who adds to the charm and atmosphere of Banjo-Tooie, and of course she remains a challenge among fans of the game.
