Mr. Vile

Mr. Vile, a menacing red crocodile, is known for his insatiable greed and wickedness in the world of Banjo-Kazooie. His name aptly describes his personality as vile, meaning unpleasant, morally bad, or wicked. In the game, he is first encountered in Bubblegloop Swamp, where he challenges Banjo and Kazooie, in his crocodile form, to a three-round competition to determine who can eat the most Yumblies or Grumblies. The competition consists of three rounds, each with a different objective. In the first round, the protagonists must eat more Yumblies than Mr. Vile. In the second round, they must eat more Yumblies while avoiding the Grumblies. In the last round, they have to eat either Yumblies or Grumblies, depending on the image at the top of the screen that changes every ten seconds. Though the White Turbo Trainers are a helpful tool for Banjo and Kazooie, it is possible to win without them. A golden Jiggy is the reward for completing all three rounds, but if the protagonists lose, Mr. Vile will start chasing them and bite them, causing Banjo and Kazooie to lose two Honeycombs of his health. If the protagonists succeed in the three-round contest, he will offer them an optional challenge to play three rounds for three Extra Lives. However, if Banjo and Kazooie lose his new optional challenge, they lose a life. Mr. Vile also makes an appearance in Grunty’s Furnace Fun, where he is one of the six possible physical challenges. The third round of the eating game is one of the challenges, but the icon at the top of the screen changes every five seconds. In addition, when a Sound Challenge with Mr. Vile’s voice plays, the options are Mr. Vile the Crocodile, Mr. Piles the Alligator, and Mrs. Bile the Crocodile. Although he does not make an appearance in Banjo-Tooie, he is mentioned in the Tower of Tragedy Quiz. In a question asked by Gruntilda Winkybunion, players are asked which Banjo-Kazooie character wasn’t seen in the game, with the right answer being Mr. Vile and the wrong answers being the characters Captain Blubber and Tiptup. Interestingly, he was originally planned in Banjo-Tooie, where he would have been found in Terrydactyland with a baby, but the reason for his exclusion remains unknown.
