Napper

Napper is an enormous green ghost serving as an obstacle for Banjo and Kazooie in the seventh world, Mad Monster Mansion, in Banjo-Kazooie. Napper was assigned by the notorious Gruntilda Winkybunion to prevent the dynamic duo from progressing in the game by keeping a Jiggy from them. This ghostly entity is a larger version of a classic Tee-Hee and is transparent when asleep but gradually becomes more opaque when awake. Also he is known to be a light sleeper and the slightest creak in the floorboards will wake him up. In the dining room of the Haunted Mansion he can be seen sleeping on the table, while the protagonists are standing on a carpet. Stepping off the carpet and onto the wooden floor would wake Napper, making it impossible to get the Jiggy inside him. To overcome this obstacle, the protagonists must climb up to the top of the Haunted Mansion and enter the chimney to reach the fireplace in the dining room. Once there, they must carefully navigate around the flames and use Kazooie’s Feathery Flap to reach the first wooden chair. From there, they must jump over to the next two chairs in order to get on the wooden table and ultimately retrieve the golden Jiggy. Interestingly, an unused music track called Giant in the game appears to have Napper’s spooky laugh. This has led some to speculate that Napper may have been intended to be a more important character in Banjo-Kazooie. This theory is supported by the fact that he is massive and that the dining room in which he resides is also gigantic. Upon obtaining the valuable Jiggy, Napper is frightened of Gruntilda’s wrath and disappears from the game entirely. This makes Napper a unique and memorable enemy in Banjo-Kazooie, and adds an extra level of challenge for players to overcome in order to progress through the game.
