Bottles is a recurring supportive character in the Banjo-Kazooie franchise, known for his role as a mentor and guide for the heroes, Banjo and Kazooie. He is a shortsighted mole who possesses a wealth of knowledge and teaches the duo new abilities and moves throughout the game. Bottles is also the brother of Jamjars, a supportive character found in Banjo-Tooie. Despite his generally meek and gentle demeanor, Bottles can become agitated once he feels he is being pestered, as shown when the player repeatedly talks to him at the first molehill in Banjo-Kazooie. Also, he isn’t afraid to throw back banter when it comes to Kazooie’s sharp tongue, either. In the first game of the series, Banjo-Kazooie, Bottles serves as the player’s primary guidance, providing numerous hints and instructions through onscreen dialogue. Bottles molehills are scattered throughout all of the game’s worlds, and interacting with them will introduce new moves that allow the player to progress. In the final battle with Gruntilda, Bottles comes to the duo’s aid by placing a Flight Pad in the arena so they can utilize the Aerial Beak Bomb to destroy her barrier. Interestingly, Bottles was Tooty’s closest friend and the only witness to her kidnapping by Grunty in Banjo-Kazooie. In the game Banjo-Tooie, Bottles is shown to be a bit oblivious to his surroundings, as he is the only one caught in the deadly blast of Gruntilda’s spell. In addition to his important role in the game’s narrative and gameplay, he is also a fan-favorite supportive character, beloved for his endearing personality and memorable appearances. Also, he is seen celebrating with Banjo and his friends twice, once in Banjo’s yard when Tooty is rescued and at the beach after Gruntilda is defeated.

The opening sequence features Bottles, Banjo, Kazooie, and the pink shaman Mumbo playing a game of poker at Banjo’s house in a stormy night. During the game, Kazooie’s cheating gets the best of Bottles, causing him to lose all his money. However, the game is quickly interrupted by an earthquake that shakes Spiral Mountain. Mumbo investigates the cause of the earthquake and discovers that Gruntilda, the wicked witch, has been freed from her prison by her sisters Mingella and Blobbelda. In a desperate attempt to warn his friends, Mumbo rushes back to Banjo’s house to inform them of Gruntilda’s return. Despite Mumbo Jumbo’s warning Bottles stubbornly refuses to evacuate, convinced that the pink shaman is lying. Unfortunately, his refusal to leave results in a fatal consequence, as the witch casts a spell aimed at Banjo’s house that catches Bottles in its deadly blast. Bottles is killed instantly, but his spirit lingers on as a ghost that haunts around the house, waiting for Banjo and Kazooie to resurrect him. Meanwhile, Bottles’ brother Jamjars takes over his previous role as the helpful mentor, teaching Banjo and Kazooie new moves and abilities throughout the game. Players will learn that Bottles had a life beyond being a mole helper since he lived in Jinjo Village with his lovely wife, Mrs. Bottles, and had two children named Speccy and Goggles. Interestingly, a demonic version of Bottles ghost was planned to appear in Banjo-Tooie as part of Bottles Revenge. It’s a special two-player game mode where the second player could take control of Bottles and try to possess other enemies to attack the first player who controlled Banjo and Kazooie. However, the Bottles Revenge feature was scrapped for a reason in the final release of the game, though this feature can still be accessed through debugging means.
