Extra Honeycomb

Extra Honeycombs, also known as Hollow Honeycombs are valuable collectibles in the games of the Banjo-Kazooie franchise. These rare pieces are often found in hard-to-reach areas within the game’s worlds, requiring players to explore thoroughly to find them. Collecting a specific amount of these Extra Honeycombs will grant the protagonists an additional honeycomb in their energy bar. In the first Banjo-Kazooie game, obtaining six Extra Honeycomb pieces, regardless of where they are found, will automatically grant Banjo one extra unit in his energy bar. There are a total of six pieces to collect in Spiral Mountain and two pieces in each of the nine worlds that are located inside Gruntilda’s Lair. Collecting eighteen of the twenty-four Extra Honeycomb pieces will raise Banjo and Kazooie’s energy capacity from five to eight. However, the final six Extra Honeycombs won’t grant an additional honeycomb and are simply extras that do not contribute to increasing the maximum energy. When the protagonists collect an Extra Honeycomb piece, the animation and sound that accompanies an energy bar increase will still play, while a honeycomb will not be added to their energy bar. Also, two of the Extra Honeycombs can only be obtained by pressing a Honeycomb Switch located in the worlds Gobi’s Valley and Rusty Bucket Bay. In the Xbox Live Arcade version of Banjo-Kazooie, finding and collecting all of the Extra Honeycomb pieces does not grant the player a maximum energy capacity of nine. However, it will unlock an achievement for the player called Show Me The Honey, worth fifteen gamerscore points. Additionally the Extra Honeycomb don’t spin, resize or rotate on the HUD like they did in the original N64 release.

» Extra Honeycombs in Banjo-Tooie

In the popular game Banjo-Tooie, players are tasked with collecting Extra Honeycomb pieces to increase the maximum energy capacity of their protagonists, Banjo and Kazooie. However, the method of collection in this game is a bit different from its predecessor. Rather than collecting six Extra Honeycombs in any order, the protagonists have to collect a certain number of pieces that increases with each exchange with Honey B, the Queen Bee. This exchange is made by bringing the collected pieces to her hive. In exchange, Honey B provides an extra honeycomb, increasing Banjo and Kazooie’s maximum energy capacity by one unit. Each of the nine worlds in the game contains three Extra Honeycombs, which can be found in hard-to-reach places throughout the world. As mentioned, players must collect a certain number of pieces for each exchange, which increases by two each time. Upon turning in twenty-five pieces, Banjo and Kazooie’s honeycomb bar doubles in size from five to ten. However, the total energy bar size for the transformations will vary. It is worth noting that the energy bar increase applies to all characters and transformations except for the Snowball, and the upgrade is permanent. Furthermore when the protagonists split up, they start with different maximum energy points. Banjo starts with three health points, while Kazooie starts out with only two. However, the amount of honeycombs filled for each character is based on their total energy level when Banjo splits from Kazooie. In other words, when an energy bar upgrade is obtained by Honey Bee the protagonists will no longer start out at their maximum energy capacity when splitting up. Additionally, it’s interesting to note that the Extra Honeycomb pieces do not resize or spin on the HUD unlike in the previous game. These collectibles are highly sought by players, and finding all of them can be a challenge, but it’s well worth it in the end.
