Arcade Coin

Arcade Coins are a special type of collectible scattered throughout the game Yooka-Laylee, the first installment in the franchise. These unique Arcade Coins serve as currency to access various Arcade Machines found throughout the game’s different worlds, including the central hub world Hivory Towers. As soon as players have acquired an Arcade Coin, they can utilize it to unlock an Arcade Machine from Rextro Sixtyfourus, the owner and creator of these machines, which will be permanently available for play. Each Arcade Machine offers a mini-game that can be unlocked by using the Arcade Coin of the current world. If players are able to surpass Rextro’s highscore in the mini-game they will be able to access the game from Yooka-Laylee’s Main Menu. There are a total of eight Arcade Machines for players to enjoy, and those who manage to beat Rextro’s high score on three different machines will be rewarded with a new Tonic by Vendi, the game’s vendor character. Arcade Coins are typically found in close proximity to Rextro’s Arcade Machines and bear a visual similarity to the yellow C buttons of the Nintendo 64 controller, with the addition of a blue interior. Interestingly, the developers Playtonic Games originally envisioned the protagonists being able to jump into the Arcade Machines themselves, as though entering a portal. However this concept was not implemented in the final version of Yooka-Laylee. It’s worth noting that the Arcade Coins were originally referred to as Play Tokens during the game’s initial promotion, but were eventually replaced by Quills, another collectible, before being renamed Arcade Coins.
