Mr. Patch is the inflatable dinosaur who serves as the boss of Witchyworld in Banjo-Tooie. His introduction calls him the Strange Wobbly Inflatable Thing. Green material covers most of his body, with a yellow belly, red eyes, broad white teeth and ridges running along his back. Brightly coloured patches cover holes across his face, body and limbs, giving him his name and supplying the targets for the fight. His flexible body can inflate from a flattened heap to a creature towering over Banjo and Kazooie, then shrink again as its air escapes. He waits inside the Big Top at the centre of the theme park. Before entering, collect the four admission tickets carried by the Fruities around the tent and give them to Conga at the entrance. The slot-machine enemies resist ordinary attacks, but Bill Drill, explosive Eggs or Humba Wumba’s Money Van can destroy them. Conga also checks that the duo have learned Airborne Egg Aiming. Jamjars teaches that move behind the Big Top once their Note total reaches 180. Grenade Eggs, taught earlier at 110 Notes, provide the usual ammunition for the boss. Inside, Banjo wonders where they should sit, and Kazooie suggests the large lump on the floor. Mr. Patch rises from that supposedly uncomfortable seat and announces that he will show the intruders who is in charge. Kazooie compares his size unfavourably with Klungo, prompting him to inflate much farther. Their exchange continues with a joke about blowing his own trumpet before the fight begins. If the pair lose and return, he says that he is not a violent inflatable and does not want to hurt them again. Kazooie’s reply that he is full of hot air persuades him to deliver another lesson. His circus-like battle theme was composed by Grant Kirkhope. The same music later appears as Vs. Mr. Patch in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, while the character himself returns for two different vehicle challenges in Nuts & Bolts.
Bursting the Twelve Patches in the Big Top
Mr. Patch has twelve patches to destroy, and the first can be attacked from the ground. Choose a clear target, switch to Grenade Eggs and aim directly at its coloured surface. A normal Blue Egg is too weak, drawing a taunt instead of opening the patch. It can be useful to remove a difficult target, such as the small one near the tail, before the later shrinking makes it harder to see. Once the first patch bursts, air jets from the hole and Mr. Patch calls for help. A red boxing glove begins emerging from below to chase the duo on the floor, while Flight Pads appear with Red Feathers and Grenade Egg supplies nearby. Take off and use Airborne Egg Aiming to continue hitting the remaining patches. Circle both the front and back of the inflatable, changing height to bring targets on his face, sides, limbs and tail into view. Each successful hit leaves a dark opening, reduces the remaining-patch counter and makes his body smaller. He also becomes a quicker, less forgiving target, so deal with awkward angles early rather than repeatedly firing at a patch that is already gone. His own attack is a volley of large beach balls spat from his mouth. These explode, and later volleys contain more balls. Leave the aiming view to turn or gain height when a ball is approaching, then line up again once there is clear space. A Beak Bomb can quickly carry Kazooie away to a better position; directly hitting an intact patch with it is another, harder-to-aim way to cause damage. Keep the flight controls separate from Beak Buster, since accidentally diving to the floor can cause heavy fall damage. If ammunition or feathers run low, land near the supplies, collect them quickly and leave before the glove reaches the pair. Honey energy around the tent can help with recovery. Touching Mr. Patch’s soft body can bounce Banjo away, while the projectiles and pursuing glove provide the greater danger during resupply. Continue until all twelve patches have burst. Mr. Patch loses his remaining air, spins around the tent and flies out of sight, leaving one Jiggy. Clearing the story encounter also adds it to the game’s boss-replay selection, where another attempt is separate from collecting that original reward.
Old Dog, New Tricks in Nutty Acres
Mr. Patch returns in Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts during Act 5 of Nutty Acres, which opens after 31 Jiggies have been banked. Find Humba Wumba on top of the volcano to start Old Dog, New Tricks. She first remarks on the island’s peaceful appearance, then senses a shadow approaching. Gruntilda has reinflated the dinosaur, and his enormous body now blocks sunlight from the coconut plants. The duo must deflate him before his presence ruins the crops. The updated design gives him sharper features, visible seams, claws and a plug on the front of his belly, replacing the position underneath his body in Tooie. Chains tether him over the island, so the main task is flying around his changing shape and attacking the twelve target patches. Bring a Player’s Choice aircraft with controllable turning, enough ammunition and guns placed where they can hit the intended surface. Egg Guns fire quickly and each patch only needs a successful hit, making rapid, accurately positioned shots useful. A helicopter or a plane equipped to hover can hold an angle while lining up the smaller targets. Work around the body instead of staying on the same side, and remember to look inside the mouth if the last patch is difficult to find. The escaping air moves his body and makes him shrink, changing where the remaining patches sit relative to the aircraft. Gruntbots in planes join the challenge and can distract the player or damage an exposed design, so keep moving between targets and avoid spending the whole attempt fighting the escorts. Unlike his circus encounter, Mr. Patch is restrained rather than walking around and spitting beach balls. Bursting all twelve patches sends him deflating away again. Finishing within 3 minutes 30 seconds reaches Jiggy standard; beating 1 minute 45 seconds also earns the T.T. Trophy. A slower successful completion can still earn Notes, so improve the aircraft and replay the event when pursuing the timed rewards.
Metal Mr. Patch and the Cactus of Strength
The next encounter takes place in Act 6 of Banjoland, which opens after 59 banked Jiggies. Captain Blubber hosts Even Older Dog, Newer Tricks near the bridge by Loggo. Mr. Patch now wears a reflective metal hide and has no exposed coloured patches to shoot. Ordinary weapons cannot puncture this version, making the museum’s Cactus of Strength the important target. This large cactus exhibit recalls Witchyworld’s strength-testing attraction, and its spikes can pierce the reinforced inflatable. Build a strong aircraft capable of moving his bulky body. A helicopter-type design with a Sticky Ball can attach to him and pull him towards the cactus, while a sufficiently powerful flying vehicle can also push him through direct contact. Position the attachment so the dinosaur does not completely obscure the route or drag the aircraft into the exhibit. Approach from a side that lets the craft maintain height and bring his body against the spikes. A successful collision damages Mr. Patch and advances the counter, but the fight requires three such contacts. Reposition for another approach after he is knocked away instead of remaining pressed against an awkward angle. As the encounter progresses, Gruntbot aircraft appear and add pressure while the player handles the much larger load. Keep enough clearance from the surrounding displays to turn, and correct the flight path before attempting the next cactus hit. Spending ammunition on the metal body will not substitute for moving it into the exhibit. After the third damaging contact, he deflates and disappears, completing the challenge. Finish within 3 minutes to reach Jiggy standard or beat 1 minute 30 seconds for the T.T. Trophy. A slower successful attempt can earn Notes, and the challenge can be replayed with another design. Banjoland also displays photographs of Mr. Patch among its references to earlier Banjo adventures.
