Trev the Tenteyecle

Trev the Tenteyecle banner placeholder

Trev the Tenteyecle is the boss of Moodymaze Marsh in Yooka-Laylee and Yooka-Replaylee. His introduction identifies him as the Upset Kraken, although his complete body remains hidden throughout the encounter. The parts that emerge are large eyes and long, flexible tentacles, with rows of suction cups underneath and smaller eyes set into the upper surface. The original tentacles have a pink-purple, mottled appearance, while the remake gives them a warmer reddish-brown colour and more pronounced surface detail. Their eyes open during vulnerable moments and close after being struck, making the creature’s unusual anatomy part of the battle. His name combines the familiar short name Trev with the words tentacle and eye. He lives inside the Moodymaze Bunker, the large metal, octopus-like building towards the far end of the marsh, close to Kartos and his minecart course. Enter the round pipe leading into it as the ordinary duo. The original fight is available before the Grand Tome is expanded, so the additional islands are not a prerequisite. Inside, the visitors find a fenced arena, metal doors and side openings through which Trev can watch them. He is more concerned with his brew and television soaps than with their adventure. When Yooka explains that they have come for a Pagie, Trev interprets their request as an attempt to steal his favourite tea cosy. The interruption has also made him miss the start of his programme. Laylee suggests watching it on catch-up, but he objects that social media will spoil it and decides to squash the intruders. This argument leads directly into the fight. His later threats continue the same domestic theme, including a proposal to stir his brew with their remains. The original battle is accompanied by Armed and Dangerous, composed by David Wise.

Sweeping Tentacles and the First Eye Opening

The original battle begins when the central opening releases an eye-covered tentacle across the arena. Trev sweeps it from side to side along the floor, so jump over the moving limb and use Laylee’s extra height or glide when more clearance is needed. The section nearest the outer fence is thinner than the part emerging from the wall, giving a more forgiving place to cross it. After the sweeps, the tentacle rises and slams down, sending a blue shockwave across the platform. Jump the wave as well as avoiding the impact itself. That slam stuns the limb and exposes its three eyes. Move in while it is motionless and use Tail Twirl or Buddy Slam to close them. The smallest eye needs one hit, the middle eye two and the largest three. Work along the limb quickly enough to reach the remaining targets before it recovers. If the opportunity ends early, Trev repeats the sweeps and slam; damage already dealt to those tentacle eyes is retained, so finish the ones still open during the next stun. Once all three have been dealt with, the limb withdraws and a tentacle hangs from the ceiling. Keep moving while it follows the duo, then leave the point beneath it as it stabs into the floor. Each impact creates another shockwave to jump. After the initial pair of overhead strikes, one of the side hatches opens to reveal a much larger eye. Approach that opening and attack the exposed eye three times during its vulnerable period, then move back before the metal cover closes. If it retreats before the required hits are completed, survive another overhead sequence and use the next opening. This larger eye is a separate target from the three along the limb. The arena’s mushrooms provide a health supply: break them to release butterflies, then collect or eat those when the tentacle has moved away. Keeping a mushroom available near the edge can help recover from a mistimed jump without abandoning the battle.

The Flooded Floor, Combined Attacks and Surrender

After the first successful attack on the large eye, Trev raises green water over the arena floor and sends a tentacle up from below to pursue the duo. Keep moving around the open space until that chase ends. The wet surface changes the footing for the following cycles, so allow more room when turning and when landing from a jump. Trev returns to the side-to-side sweeps and the self-stunning slam, again exposing the three differently sized eyes along the limb. Close those eyes, evade the overhead strikes and look for the large eye in the opposite side opening. Later vulnerable periods are shorter, making it useful to finish moving towards the expected opening as the last shockwave passes. Another three hits to the large eye advances the fight, after which the ground-level chase and sweeping sequence return. The final overhead section combines a ceiling tentacle with one pursuing the duo from below. Watch the immediate path of the lower limb while continuing to move out from under the descending one, then jump the shockwaves its impacts produce. Surviving that combination opens the first side hatch again for the final three-hit opportunity. Across the three large-eye openings, nine successful hits complete the original encounter. The eye drops out, and Trev concedes that the visitors have given him a right seeing-to. Laylee responds with a joke about how many eyes he has, while Trev finally hands over what he still calls the tea cosy and worries about the reaction when his missus comes home. Victory awards one Pagie and the Creep from the Deep achievement or trophy on supported versions. The original bunker entrance closes after the encounter is cleared. His greeting about coming back for more belongs to a return after an unsuccessful attempt. One of his later fighting taunts also echoes the football-chant wording used in Grant Kirkhope’s sampled voice for Mumbo Jumbo, connecting the exchange with another familiar piece of Banjo-Kazooie dialogue.

Tentacle Test in Yooka-Replaylee

Yooka-Replaylee retains Trev’s bunker and the tea-cosy dispute, with a Mark fast-travel point near the outside entrance. The encounter is recorded as Tentacle Test. Its remade arena is a rounded, muddy platform surrounded by a low fence, with large eye cages above the central doorway. A visible health bar tracks the boss across the successive attack sequences. The sweeping tentacle still has three eyes to attack when it is stunned, and those eyes provide opportunities to remove portions of that bar. Jump over its low passes, avoid the slam and close in when the eyes open. The overhead attacks now develop into several tentacles hanging over the platform together. Their impacts send bright gold rings spreading across the surface. Move out from under the descending tips and time jumps for the ring approaching the duo, keeping track of a second ring when another limb strikes. The large-eye opportunity also changes: the eye moves onto the arena floor and travels around the edge of the fighting space. Keep its route in view, close in when it pauses and attack the exposed weak point before the next tentacle sequence. Its rounded back can obscure the iris as it turns, so approach the visible eye rather than treating the original side hatches as the target. Later sequences combine multiple ceiling strikes with the returning sweep and moving-eye openings. Crates appear around the platform and release butterflies when broken, providing another source of recovery during the fight. After the last eye opening, Trev surrenders and the remake awards three Pagies together. Planker’s replay prompt can reset the cleared encounter for another battle. The original Creep from the Deep reward belongs to the 2017 game’s achievement list, while the remake has its own challenge-replay objectives. Exploration around the bunker supplies separate rewards: the Pagie on its roof, the nearby green-coin course and Kartos’s ride are distinct from Trev’s three-Pagie payout. To reach the roof reward, spring-jump onto the projecting pipes and use successive jumps and glides to work up around the building’s eye-like windows to its top.
