These small winged insects are easily recognizable by their grey bodies and pink wings with a dark purple outline, and can be found in almost every area within the game. The protagonists will often find butterflies fluttering around in groups near flowers, contained within breakable wooden crates, or spawning after defeating an enemy. The method by which Yooka and Laylee collect these butterflies can have a significant impact on the effect they have. By using Yooka’s Slurp ability, players can restore Butterfly Energy, which acts as the player’s life bar. Alternatively, colliding with the butterflies will regenerate the power meter of the protagonists. Players can also use the Bruiser Tonic, which enhances Yooka’s Slurp ability to restore two Butterfly Energy units instead of the usual one. Moreover, each world in the game has one Butterfly Extender, which the protagonists can collect to increase the maximum amount of Butterfly Energy units they can have by one. This means that, in addition to the initial six units of health points that Yooka and Laylee start with, players can increase their Butterfly Energy bar by collecting Butterfly Extenders. The Wellard Play-Tonic can also be equipped to extend the life bar, while the Butterthree will reduce it to a fixed amount of three units, regardless of the number of Butterfly Extenders collected.
