Coinelius

Coinelius banner placeholder

Coinelius is a ghostly golden piggy bank introduced in Yooka-Replaylee. He appears repeatedly around Hivory Towers and the five Grand Tomes, where breaking him releases Q.U.I.D.S or reveals a route for Yooka and Laylee to follow. His pig-shaped body gives the new currency a character of its own, combining the familiar idea of smashing a money box with the game’s platforming and exploration. Some encounters offer a straightforward supply of spending money, while others create temporary trails, airborne rings or a succession of further banks. These paths can draw attention to a nearby puzzle or a less obvious collectible, so following one may be useful even when the pair already have plenty of coins. Unlike Mark and the shopkeepers, Coinelius does not explain his service through a conversation. Laylee introduces the idea of breaking piggy banks during the opening adventure, and the loading tips encourage it too. His encounters are part of the remake’s new systems rather than a returning challenge from the original Yooka-Laylee.

Coinelius in Hivory Towers and the Grand Tomes

Coinelius is found in the hub as well as Tribalstack Tropics, Glitterglaze Glacier, Moodymaze Marsh, Capital Cashino and Galleon Galaxy. His repeated appearances place him along routes that use different parts of the duo’s move set, rather than confining him to one shop or a single world’s quest. A bank beside an ordinary path can supply coins with little preparation, while one on a roof or floating island first requires the player to reach it. Other placements are encountered while exploring enclosed challenge rooms. The bank itself does not demand a Play Coin, a Mollycool or a payment before it can be broken. Any transformation or environmental preparation instead belongs to the route leading to that particular encounter. This distinction matters in the later worlds, where an accessible-looking bank may stand on a ledge that is much easier to reach using Dr. Puzz’s transformation or a nearby flight power-up.

Breaking the Bank and Following Its Trail

Attack Coinelius with Yooka’s tail twirl or kick him to break him open. The result can be a collection of coins nearby, a line extending away from the bank or rings showing a route through the air. Collect the coins themselves after the bank breaks; releasing them is not the same action as picking them up. Some arrangements disappear after a short time, so look at the direction of the trail and begin moving promptly instead of stopping to inspect every coin individually. A curved trail may lead around scenery or upward onto another platform rather than straight ahead. Where another bank appears along the route, reach and break that one to continue the sequence. The precise movement depends on the surroundings: a ground trail can favour rolling, while an airborne ring sequence needs the relevant flight route. There is no single fixed payout or time limit that describes every Coinelius encounter.

Coinelius and the Treasures of Capital Cashino

Capital Cashino shows how Coinelius can lead to something more substantial than spending money. Near the route back towards Cashital Zee and the entrance, a bank-created coin path leads to a Pagie Piece above the tall stacks of casino chips. Another sequence is on the narrow ledge beside the roof of the house-of-cards building. Obtain the world’s Mollycool and use Dr. Puzz’s D.N.Ray to become a helicopter, then fly up to reach the roof area. Follow the ledge, breaking the banks that appear along its trail, to uncover the Pagie Piece at the end. These pieces contribute to the normal four-piece Pagie assembly; breaking a bank does not independently award a whole Pagie. The routes also demonstrate why Coinelius should be checked when searching for an overlooked piece, rather than dismissed as a money source after buying the desired items.

Flight Rings and the Water Chamber in Galleon Galaxy

Near the entrance side of Galleon Galaxy, a bank by the wooden pier produces airborne coin rings pointing towards the next island. Use the nearby flight power-up to follow that crossing; the rings help show the direction without replacing the need to control the flight. A different encounter appears inside a transparent structure reached from the later floating-island routes. There, a Coinelius trail points down through the chamber towards a button that fills it with water. Activating the mechanism allows the duo to swim back up and reach the Pagie above. Coinelius therefore guides the approach to the mechanism rather than dispensing that Pagie directly. Similar trails elsewhere should be read together with the surrounding platforms, switches and doors, since the coins may be highlighting where to investigate next.

Q.U.I.D.S, Quills and Other Coin Challenges

The money released by Coinelius belongs to the Q.U.I.D.S currency used around Hivory Towers. Vendi accepts these coins for Tonics and clothing, and Mark accepts them when revealing extra Pagie locations. Quills remain a separate collectible: they have different colours in each Grand Tome and are spent with Trowzer on that world’s wares. Coinelius consequently does not replace the Quill hunt or remove the need to visit Trowzer. Red and green Q.U.I.D.S activities are also distinct from an ordinary golden-bank payout. Their timed coin collections can produce a Pagie, whereas many Coinelius encounters simply supply money or reveal a useful route. A bank trail passing near a coloured-coin challenge does not make the two rewards interchangeable. Keeping the currencies and challenge triggers separate avoids confusing an ordinary purchase fund with a world’s Pagie objective.

Returning for More Coins

Banks can reappear after leaving an area and returning through a transition, allowing their coin rewards to be collected again. This makes Coinelius useful when saving for expensive Vendi purchases or replenishing money after spending it on hints. There are many banks across the adventure, so collecting from those passed during normal exploration also contributes steadily to the same balance. The Cashing In Tonic, unlocked through Trowzer’s Galleon Galaxy wares, doubles Q.U.I.D.S income and helps when gathering money for the shop. A repeatable coin source does not make its associated unique treasure repeatable: obtaining a Pagie Piece from a route does not add another piece to the collection every time its banks return. The original world reward and the later money collection need to be tracked separately. Likewise, spending coins on Mark’s hints does not advance the Vendi-only spending total for Q.U.I.D.S In.

The Breaking the Bank Achievement

Breaking the Bank is the achievement or trophy directly associated with Coinelius. The published Steam and Epic Games achievement descriptions require 35 banks to be destroyed, and the PlayStation trophy guides give the same target. Progress concerns breaking the banks, rather than collecting 35 individual coins or completing 35 different coloured-coin challenges. The supply of encounters across the hub and Grand Tomes means the target can be worked towards while following the normal adventure. Since banks return after area transitions, the activity is not restricted to a permanently exhausted set of 35 named individuals. The achievement is separate from Q.U.I.D.S In, which concerns money spent at Vendi, and from the red- and green-coin challenge trophies. Those objectives can overlap during exploration, but none should be treated as a substitute for the bank-breaking requirement.

Coinelius During Development

Coinelius was presented as one of Yooka-Replaylee’s new characters during the remake’s promotion. In its December 2024 developer commentary, Playtonic described a change to the colour of his coins: an earlier platinum appearance had given way to gold, while the Quills took on colours specific to their worlds. The bank’s rewards were consequently part of a wider redesign of the collectible system, alongside the new uses for Quills and Trowzer’s changed stock. The March 2025 gameplay explanation then described the ghostly bank’s platforming encounters and their Q.U.I.D.S rewards, with the new coins also appearing along routes throughout the worlds.
