The Dolphins

The Dolphins banner placeholder

Two friendly Dolphins offer different tasks in Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty’s Revenge. One lives near Breegull Beach and needs Banjo to remove a golden obstruction from a doorway in an underwater wreck. The other waits in Spiral Mere, where feeding Blue Eggs becomes a game with a Jiggy at stake. Their conversations distinguish the householder asking for a helping hand from the hungry dolphin proposing a food challenge. The first task uses Banjo’s diving ability and can be completed before rescuing Kazooie; the second requires her egg-firing lesson. Dolphins later appear in Banjo-Pilot’s waters and at its awards ceremony. They also resemble Snorkel, the separately named dolphin helped in the original Banjo-Kazooie.

The Two Dolphins and Their Resemblance to Snorkel

The dolphins have elongated snouts, flippers and broad mouths, with the feeding encounter making the open mouth the target for Kazooie’s eggs. Their appearance recalls Snorkel in Rusty Bucket Bay, whose own task involves being freed from beneath the ship’s anchor. The Grunty’s Revenge pair are identified through their locations and requests, without personal names being supplied in the conversations. Their resemblance to Snorkel does not establish that they are the same individual or members of his family. The beach dolphin speaks about a room inside an old wreck, while the Spiral Mere dolphin is occupied with a favourite treat. Keeping these requests separate also distinguishes their two Jiggy rewards from Snorkel’s anchor rescue.

Finding the Beach Dolphin and Learning to Dive

Look along the southern shore of Breegull Beach, below the area around Mr. Ripovski’s hut, for the dolphin waiting in the water. It asks Banjo for a helping hand, joking that it has none of its own, and explains that a shiny object is blocking the door to a room. Accept the invitation to follow it into the old wreck. Before diving, learn Underwater Diving from Bozzeye in Cliff Farm with 25 Musical Notes. Swim to the bubbling surface spot where the dolphin disappears and press R to enter Breegull Lagoon. Kazooie is not a requirement for this journey, so Banjo can complete it before the Mecha-Grunty battle that frees her. Once submerged, press A to gain height and allow Banjo to sink when an opening is lower down.

Following the Route Through Breegull Lagoon

Follow the dolphin through the underwater passages while watching both the route and Banjo’s oxygen. Whiplashes occupy some of the narrow sections and Shrapnel patrols the water, so avoid chasing directly into an obstacle while concentrating on the guide. Bubble sources along the route refill the air meter and provide useful stopping points before the next stretch. After the early turns, pass through the first coral barrier at its lower opening. Continue around the passage and rise towards the middle for the next reef opening. Another bubble source provides a refill before the last section; from there, follow the left side of the final reef and rise to its middle opening. Beyond the remaining turns, the dolphin leads towards the sunken ship. Musical Notes lie along the route, and the Empty Honeycomb Piece sits on raised seabed to the left of the second bubble source. These pickups are optional to the doorway request.

The Wreck Doorway and Haunted Hold

The object blocking the dolphin’s room is a Jiggy positioned at the entrance to the sunken ship. Swim up to the doorway and collect it to clear the obstruction and receive the prize the dolphin offered. The opening also allows entry into Haunted Hold, where more Musical Notes and a yellow Jinjo can be found. To reach that Jinjo, use the opening on the left side of the cage, adjusting Banjo’s height with A before swimming through. The hold’s surfacing route allows a return to the beach using R. Clearing the doorway and exploring the hold are connected steps, but the Jinjo belongs to the world’s separate five-Jinjo collection. Removing the obstructing Jiggy does not require collecting those five or completing the island’s other minigames first.

The Hungry Dolphin in Spiral Mere

The second dolphin appears by a salmon-coloured platform in Spiral Mere, the watery upper region of Spiral Mountain, south of the entrance to Freezing Furnace. Reach the area from Spiral Rise and use the ledges to approach the platform. On an early visit, Banjo can hear that the dolphin wants Blue Eggs, but must admit that he has not learned to fire them yet. Return after rescuing Kazooie in Breegull Beach and learning Egg Firing from Bozzeye with 80 Musical Notes. The move readies Kazooie by holding L and pressing B, with B then firing eggs in ordinary field use. This encounter becomes a special aiming challenge when the dolphin’s offer is accepted. The later Shock Spring lesson from Spiller’s Harbor is not needed just to begin the feeding task.

Feeding Ten Eggs in Fifteen Chances

The dolphin offers a treasure for receiving ten of its favourite things within fifteen chances. Those things are Blue Eggs, which must reach the open mouth when the dolphin surfaces. Watch for appearances in the water to the left, ahead and to the right of the firing position. Keep the aim near the centre between appearances, then move towards the next target and fire while the mouth is available. Waiting for a visible target is more useful than sending eggs into the water after it has submerged. Ten successful feedings leave room for at most five failed opportunities; a sixth failure prevents a ten-out-of-fifteen result. The spoken offer counts chances to feed, so use the target’s appearances as the rhythm for the game and keep track of successful hits.

Claiming the Feeding Reward

After ten successful feedings, the dolphin ends the challenge and declares that it is completely full. The promised treasure is a Jiggy, which appears on the island behind Banjo. Turn back and collect it to finish this hub-world task. Failing the feeding game leaves the reward unclaimed and allows another attempt, giving the player a chance to improve the timing and direction changes. The reward belongs to the Spiral Mere encounter and is independent of the Jiggy removed from the ship doorway in Breegull Lagoon.

Dolphins in Banjo-Pilot

Dolphins return in Banjo-Pilot as part of the scenery around Treasure Trove Cove, where they can be seen jumping through the water in the background of the course. A dolphin also appears among the spectators at the Grand Prix awards ceremony, alongside other supporting characters from Grunty’s Revenge. These appearances show the animals in the racing game without identifying the spectator as either the wreck-dwelling dolphin or the hungry one from Spiral Mere. Their role is outside the playable pilot roster. No doorway obstruction or egg-feeding mission accompanies the cameos, so the two Grunty’s Revenge encounters remain the pair’s distinct speaking tasks.
