Mark

Mark banner placeholder

Mark is a talking bookmark introduced in Yooka-Replaylee. Yooka and Laylee encounter him throughout Hivory Towers and the five Grand Tomes, where he provides fast travel and helps locate missing Pagies. He is a long blue bookmark with a notched lower edge, gold corner decoration and a ribbon projecting from the top. His large eyes and smiling mouth occupy the upper part of the bookmark, making him recognizable even without a shop or a machine around him. Mark is often asleep when found, but waking him adds a destination to the notebook’s map. He is enthusiastic about meeting the duo and describes himself as a fan, happily offering travel for free while charging Q.U.I.D.S for extra information. His frequent jokes turn his own name into words such as marker and remarkable, tying the character’s dialogue to his place in the book-themed adventure. He belongs to the remake’s new navigation system and does not appear as a warp-point character in the original Yooka-Laylee.

Mark in Hivory Towers and the Grand Tomes

Mark is encountered at multiple points along the hub’s routes and within Tribalstack Tropics, Glitterglaze Glacier, Moodymaze Marsh, Capital Cashino and Galleon Galaxy. The opening area of Tribalstack Tropics has a convenient Mark near the routes towards the central temple and aqueduct. In Glitterglaze Glacier, an early point stands on an ice pillar reached over a short wooden bridge after leaving the entrance cave; another is reached on the higher ground beyond the heated cavern route. Later locations include the roulette area of Capital Cashino and floating-island routes in Galleon Galaxy. In Hivory Towers, a Mark opposite Vendi in the area beyond the first Pagie Door provides access back to that part of the hub. These placements are useful landmarks as well as travel destinations. Finding a new Mark while exploring records another part of the world that can be revisited without repeating the whole approach.

Waking Mark and Recording a Destination

Approach a sleeping Mark to wake him and register his position on the map. His introduction explains that waking him creates a Mark-er, with the newly available destination also announced by the warp-point notification. Speak to him when he offers an interaction to hear his explanation or discuss Pagie locations. A Mark that has not yet been discovered cannot be used as a shortcut to somewhere the duo have never reached. Exploration therefore establishes the travel network before the map can shorten later journeys. Once a point is recorded, there is no requirement to buy a hint to activate its travel service. Mark’s money dialogue concerns his additional information, and he specifically reassures Laylee that warping is free. An empty coin balance consequently does not turn an already discovered destination into a paid journey.

Travelling Through the Notebook Map

Open the notebook’s map, move the cursor onto a discovered Mark icon and hold the displayed Warp input. Travel returns Yooka and Laylee to that recorded point, making the map useful when revisiting a shop, a missed collectible or a different part of the same world. The source of the journey does not have to be another Mark’s physical position; his registered icon is selected through the map. On Xbox, the right stick moves the free map cursor and holding A confirms a warp, while the left stick snaps between Pagie locations. Other controllers should follow the input shown on their own map screen. Choosing a Pagie symbol is not the same as choosing Mark’s warp marker. The distinction is particularly helpful when several points of interest overlap, since highlighting an objective alone does not transport the duo directly to its reward.

When Warping Is Unavailable

The map’s warp action is blocked during challenges. A timed course or other active event therefore has to be finished or left before Mark can be used to move away. His unavailable-travel response acknowledges that he cannot warp the duo at that moment, rather than asking for a larger fee. Mark also cannot substitute for finding a destination in the first place: an undiscovered point remains part of the exploration ahead. His role is travel to the locations already recorded on the current world’s map, not a way to open Pagie Doors without the required collection total. Free warping and the paid hint service should remain separate when diagnosing an unavailable option. Buying a Pagie location will add information to the map, but it will not remove a challenge restriction or make every nearby platform into a new warp point.

Free Discoveries and Paid Pagie Hints

Mark can reveal a Pagie location when first showing the duo an area, and his discovery dialogue includes offers of a free location. For additional help, speak to him and accept the offer to reveal a location for 50 Q.U.I.D.S. The marked objective then appears in the notebook, where its position and challenge name give the player a lead to follow. This purchase supplies information rather than the Pagie itself. Yooka and Laylee still have to reach the location and complete the relevant puzzle, race, combat encounter or other task. The payment uses the golden currency also accepted at Vendi, rather than that world’s coloured Quills. A player saving for clothing or Tonics can decline the hint and continue exploring normally, since neither buying hints nor using the warp network is required to make the underlying challenges available.

Hint Limits and Completion Responses

Mark has different replies for insufficient funds, a temporary lack of hints and the discovery of all the Pagie locations he can reveal. If the duo do not have the quoted price, he tells them how many Q.U.I.D.S they need. If too many objectives are already marked, he asks them to collect some of those Pagies before returning for more help. His congratulatory response when all locations are discovered concerns the map’s information, and should not by itself be taken as proof that every reward has been collected. A revealed location and a completed challenge are different states. His service points towards Pagie objectives; it is not a coordinate-by-coordinate guide to every individual Quill or loose Pagie Piece. When those smaller collectibles remain, searching the environment is still necessary even if Mark has no further hints to sell.

Personality and Conversations

Mark greets the duo informally, calls them buds and speaks with obvious excitement about being able to help. Laylee immediately asks what his travel service costs, prompting his explanation that he is a fan and offers warping for free. Yooka then asks whether the Pagie advice is free as well. Mark refuses that second suggestion because he is saving his gold coins for merchandise, giving the cheerful helper a reason to take part in the game’s shopping economy. His farewell remarks also joke about being present in so many places at once, and about remembering how to put the travellers back together after a warp. A loading tip supplies a book-related explanation for his knowledge: he has been sleeping inside a strategy guide and absorbing Pagie locations. His sleepiness and useful memory are therefore part of both the character’s humour and his practical role.

Mark Xs the Spot

Mark Xs the Spot is awarded for warping anywhere inside a Grand Tome. Register a Mark in one of the five worlds, open the map and use its Warp action to arrive at a discovered point. Merely waking Mark, reading his dialogue or buying a hint does not perform the journey named by the achievement. A warp made only in Hivory Towers also does not fulfil its stated Grand Tome condition. Tribalstack Tropics provides an early opportunity, so reaching the later worlds or building a large coin balance is unnecessary. The achievement recognizes using the navigation feature, rather than discovering every Mark in the game. It is independent of the collection and shopping milestones that the map can help the player work towards.

Mark’s Merchandise

Mark also has his own clothing represented in Vendi’s stock. Mark’s Shirt and Mark’s Trousers become available after collecting 95 Pagies and cost 250 Q.U.I.D.S each. They occupy Yooka’s top and trousers slots, allowing the pieces to be worn together or mixed with other accessories. They are ordinary purchases after the collection requirement is met, rather than a reward for waking every bookmark or exhausting Mark’s hints. The shirt’s shop description remarks on his happiness at having merchandise of his own, extending his conversation about saving for swag. Spending money on the clothing takes place at Vendi; buying information from Mark is a separate transaction and does not advance the Vendi-only Q.U.I.D.S In spending milestone. The All Cosmetics & Outfits guide lists both pieces alongside the rest of the remake’s clothing and their unlock requirements.
