Schell is a humanoid encountered in Galleon Galaxy in Yooka-Laylee and Yooka-Replaylee. Also known as the Spacewitch, she recruits Yooka and Laylee to breach a series of energy barriers and destroy the small ringed planet above her island. She supplies the means to weaken the defences, while the duo provide the protection and attacks needed to get through them. Her promised Pagie draws them into a mission whose purpose becomes less reassuring once the planet has exploded. Schell has green skin, pale eyes and white hair gathered into a high ponytail that curves up behind her head. Her fitted spacesuit combines pink and purple panels with metallic armour, striped legs and heavy boots. A visor covers one eye, and bright blue lights stand out on the equipment attached to her suit. This equipment is part of her predicament: she explains that her own shield is damaged, leaving her unable to force a way through the barriers ahead. Although she is called a Spacewitch, the encounter centres on shields, transport machinery and a planetary self-destruct system. Becky Lavender provides her speech sounds in the original game. Schell stands beside the energy barriers near the large robot structure in the expanded Galleon Galaxy. The additional islands and the ringed planet appear after the Grand Tome has been expanded for fifteen Pagies. When Yooka questions whether she is a villain, she gives an evasive answer before offering information about a Pagie high above them. She says that the Blamphibians are building a secret weapon on the planet and asks the duo to help reach its self-destruct system. Laylee needs Sonar Shield, which Trowzer teaches in this world for one hundred Quills; Schell directs the pair towards him if they lack suitable protection. Speaking with her weakens the red barriers to yellow. Yooka can then roll through them with Sonar Shield active, breaking each field while the pair cross the small islands. The last crossing requires a jump in motion, since the sloping ground between the barriers is not a safe place to stop. When the route is clear, Schell joins them and removes the field blocking the transport shaft. She explains that the planetary self-destruct system was installed as a precaution against somebody stealing the entire planet.
Schell’s Mission in Yooka-Laylee
The shaft carries Yooka and Laylee up to the ringed planet, where a moving outer ring leads around the central sphere. Following the ring brings them to the marked entrance of a tunnel climbing into the planet. Sonar Shield protects them as they pass its yellow barrier, but the glass farther inside requires Reptile Rush. The same charged rolling attack operates the self-destruct switch at the end of the route. Since this switch rotates on the wall, the duo must wait until its face is within reach before rushing into it. Activating it destroys the planet and dislodges its rings, completing Schell’s original one-Pagie mission. The fallen ring also changes the route through Galleon Galaxy: it becomes a ramp to the raised area containing the charged-ball puzzle and the outhouses. Those are further tasks reached through the aftermath of her mission, rather than extra stages required to earn her own Pagie. The original shaft is entered using Flappy Flight. From the upper platform, flight also allows a shortcut directly to the marked tunnel entrance instead of following the entire moving ring. Sonar Shield consumes power, so maintaining the defence throughout a long crossing also requires watching the energy meter. The conversation after the explosion changes the meaning of Schell’s request. Laylee enthusiastically recounts the destruction, but Schell treats it as the opening for an assault on the Blamphibian homeworld. Yooka had understood that they were preventing an attack and questions why they now seem to be starting one. Schell’s subsequent remark about pursuing an artefact gives her a personal objective beyond the reward she offered the duo. Her earlier description of a dangerous enemy and a secret weapon is therefore her explanation for recruiting them, rather than an impartial account of the conflict. She genuinely cooperates with Yooka and Laylee by weakening the fields and opening the shaft, yet the ending leaves them having helped her launch an offensive they did not knowingly agree to.
Schell in Yooka-Replaylee
Schell returns beside the shielded island route in Yooka-Replaylee, where the local chest supplies the protective energy state needed for the crossing. The chest stands beside the first barrier, and licking its energy surrounds the duo with a visible blue sphere. This lets the remake supply the protection at the encounter itself, rather than requiring the original purchase from Trowzer. Her conversation still weakens the barriers so that the duo can break through them and allow her to reach the transport shaft. The remake separates the mission into two named Pagie objectives: Schell Game rewards clearing the lower barriers and reaching the shaft, while Raising Schell rewards destroying the planet above. After taking the lift, the duo traverse the rotating ring, enter the tunnel and use their charged dash to break the glass and hit the self-destruct switch. The resulting fallen ring again opens the upper area, which also holds the remake’s Ghost Writer reward plinth. Schell’s return conversation offers to reset her challenge for another attempt. Accepting brings a response about restoring it with bonus Q.U.I.D.S, while declining leaves the offer open. Schell still waits for Yooka to announce that the route is clear before joining the pair at the shaft. Her recognisable ponytail, striped suit and one-eye visor remain, but the remake gives the armour more pronounced metallic surfaces and bright cyan lighting. In Playtonic’s account of the remake’s art, character artist Steve Mayles singled out Schell’s human design as an enjoyable change from the rest of the cast. He described rebuilding characters individually, with revised geometry and new textures while keeping their original designs recognisable.
