The Snowies are living snowflake-shaped creatures encountered in Freezing Furnace in Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty’s Revenge. A gang is trying to capture them, and their cries for help draw Banjo and Kazooie into Snowy Sleds, a competitive rescue played on skidoos. The Snowies explain their situation and tell the pair how to operate a vehicle and interfere with the rival drivers. Winning requires collecting more Snowies than each opponent before the short time limit ends. Their encounter provides one of Freezing Furnace’s Jiggies and later becomes an unlockable game at N. Kreditz Arcade.
The Snowies’ Cry for Help
The encounter opens with an opponent greeting Banjo and Kazooie irritably and being questioned about what he is doing there. Cries for help interrupt the conversation, but the rival tries to dismiss the noise. A Snowy then speaks up, identifies the group and explains that the man and his gang are trying to catch them. Banjo offers to help, although he first needs to know how. The Snowies respond with a plan: take one of the skidoos and pick them up before the gang can reach them. One Snowy talks the pair through the controls, explaining how to accelerate, steer and throw snowballs at the gang.
Finding the Snowy Sleds Cave
The minigame is inside a cave on the outer, frozen part of Freezing Furnace, between the igloo and the giant Biggafoot statue. Look for the snowmobile stranded in the snow near the approach and the Biggafoot patrolling by the entrance. Coming from the timed-Jiggy area, cross the ice floats to the right and use Feathery Flap to reach the shore before heading north to the cave. Deal with the nearby patrol or leave enough space to pass it safely, then enter. This route stays in the icy exterior of the world. The rescue is reached before entering the industrial interior and does not depend on opening its factory doors or using the Tank transformation.
Forty-Five Seconds to Beat Three Rivals
Snowy Sleds places Banjo and Kazooie against three other drivers in an open snow-covered arena. Snowies fall into the play area and can be picked up by driving over them once they reach the ground. The round lasts forty-five seconds, during which every driver is competing for the same available creatures. To win the Jiggy, finish with more Snowies than any individual rival. The aim is first place among four drivers, rather than collecting a predetermined number or matching the gang’s combined total. Head icons along the left side of the screen show the current order, with the leader at the top, so watch that ranking as the remaining time decreases.
Driving the Skidoo
Press A to move forward and use left or right on the Control Pad to turn the skidoo. Steering changes the direction the vehicle faces, making it useful to line up the next Snowy before accelerating towards it. The Snowies also explain that either L or R throws a snowball at the opposing drivers. A successful hit makes a rival spin and delays that driver’s collection, giving the rescuers an opportunity to reach nearby Snowies first. The controls combine movement and interference within the same timed round. Practise turning through a small area before committing to a long chase, since an overshot pickup may be taken by another sled while Banjo turns back.
Collecting Snowies and Protecting the Lead
Keep watching where new Snowies land instead of following a rival around an empty section of the arena. A nearby unclaimed Snowy is usually a better immediate target than one already beneath another driver’s sled. Choose a route through several accessible pickups, adjusting it as fresh creatures arrive, and use snowballs when an opponent is about to reach the same group. The ranking display helps judge whether a detour is worthwhile: being ahead of two drivers still leaves the round unfinished if the third is leading. Near the end, spend the remaining seconds collecting or delaying the leader rather than assuming an earlier advantage is secure. These tactics follow the shared-pickup competition; there is no single fixed rescue count that guarantees a win in every round.
The Jiggy and the Return to Freezing Furnace
A winning finish provokes an angry response from the defeated opponent and earns the promised Jiggy. It drifts over to Banjo and Kazooie’s skidoo and is collected as the challenge ends. The pair then return to the cave entrance in the main world, where the patrolling Biggafoot can still threaten them. Be ready to move or fight as exploration resumes. If another driver finishes ahead, the opponent taunts Banjo for failing to collect enough Snowies, and the heroes promise to return. The encounter remains available for another attempt, allowing a new route through the arena and better use of snowballs.
Snowy Sleds at N. Kreditz Arcade
Snowy Sleds can also be unlocked in the postgame N. Kreditz Arcade selection for 160 gold credits coins. This provides direct access to the competitive skidoo activity after the adventure, alongside the other unlockable minigames. The 160-coin purchase adds it to the collection of minigames that can be selected for replay. The replay centres on gathering the living snowflakes while contending with the other drivers. The Snowies’ original story role remains their request to be saved from the gang, with the arcade offering a way to revisit the challenge without crossing the world’s ice floats again.
