Chris P. Bacon is a non-playable character found within the aquatic depths known as Atlantis of Jolly Roger’s Lagoon, specifically in the Temple of the Fishes, in the video game Banjo-Tooie. His very name, a humorous play on crispy bacon, hints at the light-hearted tone of the game and the playful nature of its characters. Chris, a pig, finds himself in a predicament, suspended in an iron cage and submerged in water to film the ancient walls of the Temple of the Fishes. Despite Chris precarious situation, he isn’t in need of rescue. Instead, Banjo and Kazooie, the protagonists, are tasked with his protection from the menacing piranhas that threaten to interrupt his work. As he descends back into the watery depths, armed with a Game Boy Camera to capture the temple’s mysteries, Banjo and Kazooie must fend off aggressive fish by shooting eggs. The task is a race against time, requiring them to ensure that no piranha manages to nibble on Chris. Should Chris be bitten, he hastily retreats to the safety of the surface, prompting Banjo and Kazooie to ready themselves for another attempt. Surviving the ordeal with not as much as a scratch earns Banjo and Kazooie a golden Jiggy, a token of gratitude from Chris for their protection. Chris P. Bacon’s attire is both practical and a nod to the game’s British origins. His swimming trunks proudly bear the Union Jack, complemented by blue flippers and a snorkel, underscoring Rareware’s English roots. The playful elements of Chris design, like his Game Boy Camera, remain consistent across game releases, maintaining a sense of nostalgia. The creation of Chris P. Bacon’s character was itself a community effort, born from the creative minds of Rareware’s fanbase. Through a special contest hosted by Nintendo Official Magazine UK, the name Chris P. Bacon, submitted by Simon Turk, triumphed. This winning entry secured the character’s inclusion in the lore of the game.
