Dragon Kazooie

Dragon Kazooie banner coming soon

Dragon Kazooie is a secret transformation in Banjo-Tooie. Humba Wumba changes Kazooie into a green dragon with red eyes and leathery wings, while Banjo keeps his usual appearance. The reward gives Kazooie a continuous Fire Breath attack and an unlimited supply of Fire Eggs, and it can accompany the pair throughout their adventure. Unlocking it requires a small chain of discoveries across several worlds: obtain the Ice Key, learn Talon Torpedo in Jolly Roger’s Lagoon, open a hidden passage in Glitter Gulch Mine and take the Mega-Glowbo to Humba’s wigwam in Pine Grove. The Ice Key step differs between the Nintendo 64 and Xbox versions, so follow the route for the edition you are playing before continuing with the shared instructions.

Before You Begin

You can collect the Nintendo 64 Ice Key early, but the complete transformation must wait until you can enter Jolly Roger’s Lagoon and learn Talon Torpedo. Jiggywiggy’s fourth challenge requires 20 Jiggies to open that world; Talon Torpedo then requires a total of 290 Musical Notes. Jamjars checks your collected Note total when teaching a move, so learning earlier abilities does not spend those Notes. Keep at least five Red Feathers for the underwater attack that opens the vault route. You also need access to Pine Grove, the Isle o’ Hags area outside Witchyworld. The normal route from the Plateau opens by shooting its orange gate switch with a Fire Egg. Learn Fire Eggs from Jamjars on the Plateau, below Honey B’s Hive near the mine entrance, once you have 45 Notes.

Nintendo 64: Finding the Ice Key

Return to Jinjo Village and find the sandy patch beside the rock wall near the passage back towards Spiral Mountain. Climb the rocks to the narrow ledge, jump to catch its edge and shimmy along the wall with Grip Grab. Watch for the snapping wall enemy and use Kazooie’s ledge attack if it gets in your way. Pull up at the cave opening and follow the tunnel to a walking Banjo-Kazooie Game Pak. Attack the cartridge until it breaks, then collect the Ice Key it releases. If Banjo cannot hang from the ledge, first learn Grip Grab from Jamjars just inside the main entrance to Jade Snake Grove in Mayahem Temple; the requirement is 35 Notes. This route also applies to releases using the Nintendo 64 game, including Nintendo Switch Online. Everything required is inside Banjo-Tooie, with no original Banjo-Kazooie cartridge or cartridge swapping involved.

Xbox: Transferring the Ice Key

The Xbox version replaces the Jinjo Village Game Pak’s Ice Key with a Gold Mystery Egg for Stop ’n’ Swop II. For Dragon Kazooie, first create and save a Banjo-Tooie game under your Xbox profile, then open the Xbox version of Banjo-Kazooie using the same profile and accessible save storage. A compatible Tooie or Nuts & Bolts save enables the Stop ’n’ Swop items there. Travel to Freezeezy Peak, enter Wozza’s Cave and backflip onto the ledge where the orange Jinjo sits. The ice barrier behind that ledge will be open, allowing you to walk into the chamber and collect the key. Save, return to Tooie and check the Stop ’n’ Swop section of View Totals to confirm the transfer before heading for the safe. This is also the route for the Xbox games played through Rare Replay and backward compatibility. The Nintendo 64 sandcastle Ice Key code is unnecessary for this version; collecting the Gold Mystery Egg in Tooie does not replace the transfer.

Reaching Jolly Roger’s Lagoon

If the route to the fourth world is still closed, first visit Witchyworld, opened through Jiggywiggy’s eight-Jiggy challenge. Jamjars teaches Grenade Eggs outside its entrance for 110 Notes, allowing you to break the park’s entrance barrier. Inside the park, find his hatch directly behind the Big Top tent and learn Split-Up for 160 Notes. Return to the Plateau and use the Split-Up Pads near the cliff. Take Banjo onto the gate switch marked with his face, switch to Kazooie and stand on her matching switch to open the gate. Reunite the pair and pass through to the Cliff Top. Learn Ice Eggs from Jamjars here for 200 Notes, then follow the path past Mumbo’s Skull to the doorway marked To Ye Lagoon. Jiggywiggy’s 20-Jiggy challenge opens that world entrance; visit his temple in Wooded Hollow first if the door remains sealed.

Preparing for the Underwater Route

Before descending to Atlantis, prepare the lagoon for a long swim. In the harbour town, enter Pawno’s Emporium and climb its shelves to collect the Glowbo. Take it to Mumbo’s Skull, give it to Mumbo upstairs and control him down to his magic pad by the dock. Activate Oxygenate to let Banjo and Kazooie breathe underwater in the lagoon, then return to the skull and switch back to the pair. Visit Jolly’s bar and rent the room for two Doubloons, collected around town and on the dock’s posts. Jamjars waits inside and teaches Sub-Aqua Egg Aiming for 275 Notes. This lets you aim the Ice Egg needed to freeze the octopus on the Atlantis route. Oxygenate applies to this world’s water, so continue watching your air when you later return to Glitter Gulch Mine’s submerged tunnel.

Learning Talon Torpedo

In Jolly Roger’s Lagoon, dive through the large opening beneath the harbour and descend towards Atlantis. The underwater route is guarded by an octopus; freeze it with an Ice Egg to pass. Jamjars teaches Ice Eggs on the Cliff Top for 200 Notes if you have not learned them yet. In Atlantis, activate the warp pad on the broken pillar and look for the nearby building leading into the Electric Eel’s Lair. Swim past the eels, surface in the air pocket and follow the short tunnel to Jamjars’ hatch. With 290 Notes collected, he teaches Talon Torpedo, allowing Kazooie to launch from Banjo’s backpack underwater and steer into obstacles marked with her face. Each launch consumes five Red Feathers. On Nintendo 64, press Z underwater to launch; on Xbox, use a trigger. Stock up before returning to Glitter Gulch Mine, since ordinary attacks and explosive eggs cannot substitute for this move at the marked underwater boulder.

Entering Waterfall Cavern

Return to Glitter Gulch Mine through the Plateau and climb down the entrance rope. Break the nearby crate containing Turbo Trainers, put them on and find the floor switch beside the river near the large purple ore mound. Stepping on it briefly opens the gate at the river’s far end. Run along the stream with the trainers, which let you cross its surface, and jump through the opening before the gate closes. If the timer expires, return to the shoes and activate the switch again. Inside Waterfall Cavern, descend past the upper waterfall and the platform holding a Jiggy, then drop to the second, wider pool below. You can also enter this lower part through Water Storage if you already know that connecting route, but the timed river gate provides a direct approach from the world entrance.

Opening the Ice Safe

Dive into the lower pool and locate the submerged boulder marked with Kazooie’s face. Launch Talon Torpedo, steer directly into the marking and break the obstruction, then swim through the newly opened underwater tunnel. The chamber beyond belongs to Hailfire Peaks’ Icy Side, although you arrive here from Glitter Gulch Mine. A window overlooks the icy world, and the large Ice Safe stands inside this separate chamber. Approach the safe with the Ice Key in your inventory and the lock opens automatically. Walk inside to collect the large pink Mega-Glowbo. You do not need to unlock Hailfire Peaks’ main entrance, break its window or search the snowy mountainside for another way in. Leave through the same swimming tunnel; from the lower Waterfall Cavern pool, the doorway above the water leads through Water Storage and back to the mine.

Humba Wumba’s Ultimate Transformation

Leave Glitter Gulch Mine for the Plateau and travel through its large gate into Pine Grove. Enter Wumba’s Wigwam beside the Witchyworld entrance, speak to Humba and agree to give her the Mega-Glowbo. Once she has prepared her magic, jump into the pool with Banjo and Kazooie together. Banjo initially looks unchanged, but Kazooie emerges from his backpack in dragon form. This particular wigwam handles Dragon Kazooie; Humba inside Witchyworld provides the Van transformation instead. A regular Glowbo will not pay for the spell, and the Mega-Glowbo has to be collected from the Ice Safe rather than bought or exchanged for other items. Neither Heggy’s Mystery Egg rewards nor a complete Jiggy collection is required. After this one-time offering, you can use the Pine Grove pool again without finding another Mega-Glowbo.

Using Fire Breath

Stand still on the ground and hold the attack button: B on Nintendo 64 or X on Xbox. Kazooie leans out and breathes a continuous stream of flame in place of her ordinary stationary peck attack. Hold the button to keep the stream going and turn to sweep it around nearby enemies. It does not consume eggs or require a separate Jamjars lesson after the transformation. Keep its short reach in mind: an enemy or object farther away may still need a projectile. Fire Breath is also available to Kazooie when the pair are separated at a Split-Up Pad. Moving or jumping changes which normal attack is performed, so stop before holding the button if you are trying to breathe fire. The dragon appearance does not replace the rest of the pair’s learned movement abilities.

Unlimited Fire Eggs

Select Fire Eggs from the usual ammunition selection and fire them with the normal egg controls. Dragon Kazooie’s supply does not run out, making this useful for repeated fire switches, flammable obstacles and enemies vulnerable to heat. It is especially convenient when fighting Chilly Willy on Hailfire Peaks’ Icy Side, where Fire Eggs are the appropriate ammunition, or while dealing with Bang Boxes and Biggyfoots. The benefit applies to Fire Eggs only: Ice Eggs, Grenade Eggs and Clockwork Kazooie Eggs still use their own ammunition. Red Feathers also remain necessary for moves that consume them, including Talon Torpedo. When a puzzle specifically calls for ice, an explosion or a remotely controlled Clockwork Kazooie, change to that egg type rather than assuming the dragon’s flames can solve it.

Keeping or Reversing the Transformation

You can leave Pine Grove and continue through other worlds as Dragon Kazooie. The form is optional and does not have the usual restriction that keeps a world-specific transformation near its own area. To return Kazooie to her red breegull appearance, revisit Humba’s Pine Grove wigwam and jump into the magic pool again. Jump back in whenever you want the dragon form restored. This makes the reward a reusable choice for the same save file, so accepting Humba’s spell does not force you to finish the game as a dragon. Kazooie’s deeper movement and attack calls help distinguish the form, while her dialogue portrait and some scripted appearances can still show the familiar breegull.

If the Unlock Does Not Work

Check the stage of the sequence that failed. A cave Game Pak dropping a Gold Mystery Egg means you are playing the Xbox version and need the Ice Key transfer from Banjo-Kazooie. A sealed Ice Safe means the key has not been collected or imported into this Tooie profile. An intact face-marked boulder requires Talon Torpedo and enough Red Feathers, even if you already own the key. If Humba offers a different transformation, leave that world and find her separate wigwam in Pine Grove. If she still requests the Mega-Glowbo, return to the safe and collect the creature inside; opening the door alone does not complete that step. For the related Mystery Eggs and their separate rewards, see Stop ’n’ Swop and Stop ’n’ Swop II.
