Grunty’s Furnace Fun

Banner artwork coming soon

Grunty’s Furnace Fun is Gruntilda’s game show near the top of Gruntilda’s Lair in Banjo-Kazooie. Banjo and Kazooie must cross a branching board suspended above lava, answering questions about the adventure and revisiting earlier minigames before they can rescue Tooty. The 94-square board tests knowledge of the worlds, characters, collectibles, music and even Gruntilda’s private life. Its colored symbols show what kind of challenge comes next, while Joker Cards provide a way past dangerous squares. Reaching the far end wins Tooty’s freedom, but Gruntilda herself still has to be defeated afterwards. This guide covers reaching the show, every tile type, all six timed challenges and the complete English question families, including their world and season variants. The lookup questions use concise wording so that you can find the relevant answer without searching through Gruntilda’s rhymes. Picture and sound entries identify the subject of the game’s own displayed image or playing clip.

Reaching Grunty’s Furnace Fun

In the part of Gruntilda’s Lair containing the entrance to Click Clock Wood, climb the leaf platforms to the 765-Note Door. Your Note total must reach 765 to open it; the 810-Note Door belongs to the route after the quiz. Beyond the first door, stand on the Tooty-marked transport pad to enter the game-show chamber. After Gruntilda introduces the prizes, activate the yellow cauldron behind the starting area so that its partner can provide a shortcut once you reach the far side. Bring as much health as possible, collect a supply of Gold Feathers for the combat challenges and consult the Brentilda facts recorded during your journey. You do not need to clear every square or every branch: the objective is to reach the final square in front of Gruntilda’s prize platform.

Crossing the Board

Walk onto an accessible uncleared square and use the action shown by the game to begin. On Nintendo 64, A starts the question and B uses a Joker before it starts; Xbox uses its displayed controller prompts. Choose the answer by its wording, because the three positions are shuffled. A correct response clears the square and opens the connected route. An ordinary wrong answer costs one unit of health and normally leaves the square to be tried again, while a failed Skull question costs a life. Cleared squares can be crossed again without repeating their questions, allowing a retreat to accessible Honeycombs or a different branch. The board restricts the pair’s usual movement abilities, so jumping over an unanswered tile is not the normal solution. Losing a life restarts the board attempt and removes the Joker Cards carried during it.

Planning a Safer Route

Work toward reachable Joker squares early, then judge each junction by its hazards and your remaining health. A two-card reward can be more useful than the shortest route, particularly when it lets you bypass the Skull squares near the end. Stand on the square you want to skip and use the Joker input before accepting its question; cards cannot rescue an answer that has already gone wrong. Keep at least one for the final Skull if possible, and spend another on a timed challenge you consistently lose. Blank branches may offer recovery items, but an Extra Life is worth less than the current run if reaching it requires an unnecessary sudden-death gamble. Backtrack over cleared squares when collecting health instead of opening a fresh risky path merely because it looks closer.

Tile Types

The eight tiles below use the same symbols as the board. Learn the category before starting the square, then use the matching answer section or challenge instructions. A Joker skips the selected obstacle; it does not move Banjo automatically across several tiles or award the cards from an unplayed Joker square.

BOARD TILES

Banjo and Kazooie Square

Banjo and Kazooie Square

The blue tile asks a written question about the adventure: characters, objects, places, moves, numbers or events. There are three possible answers. Read the exact subject and watch for questions asking which statement is false or which object is absent. Some familiar question patterns change the world, season or Note Door being discussed, so a memorized number is useful only when it matches that version of the question.

Musical Note Square

Musical Note Square

The green tile plays a sound from the game. It can be a character’s voice, a pickup sound, the music accompanying a temporary move, a world theme or the music of a particular interior. Match what you hear to the answer choices. The sound section below separates these five categories; a question about an interior needs the room rather than merely the world that contains it.

Blank Square

Blank Square

A plain grey square asks no question and can be crossed freely when the route to it is open. Some blank spaces give access to Honeycombs or Extra Lives, while others connect branching paths. Cleared spaces remain available for backtracking during the current attempt. Use these safe stretches to examine the next junction and collect accessible health before taking on an uncertain square.

Gruntilda Square

Gruntilda Square

The purple tile asks about Gruntilda’s habits, possessions, childhood or tastes. Brentilda reveals the correct information at ten places around Gruntilda’s Lair, with three facts at each encounter. These answers are selected for the save file. Another player’s answer can be wrong in your game, and a list of all three possibilities does not tell you which one Brentilda selected. Keep a record of the clues from your own adventure.

Skull Square

Skull Square

The red tile is a sudden-death question. A wrong answer launches Banjo off the board and costs a life, regardless of how much health remains. It can draw on other question categories, so do not assume that a Skull always asks ordinary trivia. A Joker Card can clear the square before the question starts. Preserve cards for the unavoidable red squares approaching the finish, where a failed guess would erase the attempt.

Eye Square

Eye Square

The orange Eye tile displays a close-up or an unusual view of a location or character. Identify the subject on the screen, using surface textures, scenery, clothing or facial features rather than the question’s repeated wording. World questions and character questions have separate answer families. Several views can point to the same world, so the answer list below is organized by what is being shown rather than by one supposed fixed screenshot order.

Stopwatch Square

Stopwatch Square

The pink tile returns Banjo and Kazooie to one of six activities from earlier in the game. Complete the assigned task before its timer expires, then return to the board. These are altered challenges rather than requests to collect the original Jiggy again: the sandcastle uses a reversed name, Tiptup gives a seven-note sequence and Mr. Vile switches the required food frequently. Use a Joker before starting if you want to avoid the challenge.

Joker Square

Joker Square

The white tile offers a question with a reward of two Joker Cards for a correct answer. Each card skips one eligible uncleared square when used before its question begins. You receive only one attempt to earn the cards from that Joker square; answering incorrectly uses up the opportunity. A successful detour to a Joker can therefore save two later risks, but visiting it is not a guarantee of receiving cards.

Timed Challenges

Stopwatch squares select from six familiar activities. The game transports the pair to the appropriate room and brings them back when the challenge ends, supplying the Crocodile transformation for Mr. Vile automatically. Follow the challenge’s own timer and instructions rather than expecting the original world task to have identical rules. The times below describe the familiar Nintendo 64 challenge clocks; regional timing code differs, so the displayed clock in your release takes precedence. The normal question bank cannot solve these tiles for you, and a Joker must be used before entering if you intend to skip one.

Boss Boom Box

Destroy the complete Boss Boom Box family in Rusty Bucket Bay’s hold within the 70-second challenge. The large explosive crate splits into two, those split again and the smallest crates must also be destroyed, making 15 boxes in total. Activate Wonderwing and stay close enough for the moving boxes to collide with its protection; this both destroys them and avoids contact damage while Gold Feathers last. Turn toward each newly separated group rather than chasing just one small box while the others spread around the room. If feathers are scarce, attack during safe openings and keep clear of the crates’ movement. The task ends only after the final small box is gone, not when the original large box first breaks apart.

Mr. Vile

Inside the giant crocodile in Bubblegloop Swamp, outscore Mr. Vile before the one-minute clock expires. Banjo is transformed into a crocodile for this contest. Watch the food indicator: it alternates between Yumblies and Grumblies at five-second intervals, faster than the ten-second changes of the ordinary final round. Bite only the currently requested food and change your target as soon as the indicator switches. Taking an item on the wrong side of a change wastes valuable time, so stop pursuing a distant piece when its type is about to become invalid. Use the Running Shoes when available to move between clusters and keep ahead of Vile’s score. A tie does not win; your final total must be higher than his.

Gobi’s Valley Matching Game

Return to the picture-tile pyramid and match all eight pairs within the shortened 75-second clock. Beak Buster turns over a floor panel. Reveal tiles in a consistent order, remember the position of each picture and immediately complete a pair once both matching positions are known. Avoid random running between far corners, which spends the timer on travel rather than new information. Matching pictures include familiar characters and items, but Gruntilda is not among them. The mummy in the room is another reason to watch your surroundings while lining up a ground pound. Finishing a few pairs is insufficient: every matching pair must be cleared before the hourglass empties.

The Zubbas’ Hive

Defeat ten Zubbas in the Click Clock Wood hive within 30 seconds. Let the bees approach rather than running constantly around the chamber. Wonderwing is effective here because contact with its protection destroys an attacking Zubba while shielding Banjo from the collision. Keep the hive and incoming bees in view, maintain the move while feathers permit and reposition only when necessary to meet the next attacker. If you rely on ordinary attacks, strike as a Zubba comes within range and recover before another one reaches you. The short clock makes avoiding a long pursuit more useful than blindly following a retreating bee.

Tiptup’s Choir

Inside Tanktup, watch the six small turtles perform a seven-note sequence, then repeat it with Beak Buster within 30 seconds. The same turtle can appear more than once in the sequence, so record the full order rather than merely which turtles participated. Identify them by their positions or shell colors, wait for the demonstration to finish and strike the corresponding backs in order. Keep jumps controlled to avoid clipping the wrong choir member. A wrong hit costs time and health without providing a shortcut through the remaining pattern. There is no universal seven-note answer to memorize: the game chooses the sequence for the attempt.

The Sandcastle

In Treasure Trove Cove’s sandcastle, spell BANJOKAZOOIE backwards by Beak Busting the floor letters in this exact order: E I O O Z A K O J N A B. The completed code is EIOOZAKOJNAB, and the challenge gives 50 seconds. The two consecutive O inputs each require a separate strike. Plan the route between letters before committing to long jumps, and do not enter the ordinary forward name from the original Jiggy puzzle. You do not need to type CHEAT before this challenge code. Completion is determined by entering the name correctly before the clock runs out, rather than by collecting the sandcastle’s original reward again.

Using the Answer Bank

The written questions are grouped by the place or subject named in the question, followed by picture, sound and Gruntilda sections. Numbers refer to what the quiz accepts, which matters for deliberately awkward questions such as Clanker’s entrances or the bears in Freezeezy Peak. Words such as “not”, “false” and “odd one out” reverse what you must choose; the answer beneath each lookup preserves that distinction. The general section includes world-dependent versions of recurring templates, so check the named world and season before selecting a number or move. For picture and sound questions, use the accompanying image or clip in your game: the repeated question wording alone cannot identify which answer the game is asking for.

General Questions and Answers

These entries cover the general question templates and the verified world, Note Door and season variants. Answer positions are deliberately omitted because their order changes. Where a question uses an unusual accepted label, the explanation retains that label so that you can recognize it among the options.

Gruntilda’s Questions and Brentilda’s Clues

The thirty personal questions work differently from the ordinary fact questions. When a save is initialized, the game selects one of three possible answers for each fact. Brentilda’s thirty clues reveal those selections in groups of three across ten encounters in Gruntilda’s Lair; speak to her repeatedly at each place until you have heard all three. Her answers remain tied to that save, so copy them under the subjects below and use them whenever that subject appears. Hearing another player’s clue or choosing the first option in a published list is not sufficient. If you have not recorded a particular fact, return to Brentilda before the quiz or spend a Joker on an uncertain Gruntilda square. The following rows deliberately list every possible answer without marking one universally correct.

Winning the Show

Clear the last square to reach the prize platform. Gruntilda has displayed Tooty alongside a washing machine and a Gruntilda doll, but rescuing Tooty is the story reward. The witch accepts the result and escapes while the game presents an apparent ending and credits. The following celebration is interrupted when Tooty reminds Banjo and Kazooie that Gruntilda still needs to be stopped. On Xbox, the associated achievement is The Quiz Master, worth 20G. Winning Furnace Fun does not award the final-battle victory or finish the pair’s confrontation with the witch. Keep the distinction in mind when preparing to continue: the safe route across the game-show board is only the last obstacle before the upper lair.

Continuing to the Final Battle

After the celebration, return to the far side of the Furnace Fun chamber and climb the stairs beside the prize platform. Activate the other yellow cauldron to connect this side with the cauldron at the entrance, avoiding another crossing when you revisit the area. The next Note Door requires 810 Notes. Beyond it, complete the final picture with 25 Jiggies to open the route toward Dingpot and the roof. Additional Note Doors near Dingpot offer useful preparation, including the health upgrade available through the last picture, but they are separate from the 765-Note requirement for reaching the quiz. When your supplies and health are ready, jump into Dingpot to travel to Gruntilda’s rooftop battle.

Optional Furnace Fun Skip

A documented glitch uses the knockback from a deliberately failed Skull question to land on the board instead of falling into the lava. One setup uses the first Skull in the final stretch containing three Skull squares. Position Banjo’s right foot over the skull picture’s left eye, enter first-person view and align the bottom of Kazooie’s beak with the corner where the previous squares meet. Leave first-person view, start the question and deliberately answer incorrectly. With the alignment correct, the launch lands Banjo back on the board and allows movement across the remaining uncleared squares without their normal questions. A second documented setup uses the far-left Skull beside a Musical Note square and a Gruntilda square: stand at its upper-right edge, face the upper-right corner and deliberately fail. These are precision setups, not normal board rules; a missed landing costs a life and restarts the attempt. Positioning can differ between releases, so do not assume a setup demonstrated in one version transfers exactly to another. This board skip is distinct from glitches that preserve extra moves during Furnace Fun.
