Hivory Towers

650px HivoryTowers Banner

Hivory Towers, a sprawling huge factory situated in Shipwreck Creek, is a central location within the first Yooka-Laylee game. Owned by the cunning and manipulative antagonist Capital B, the factory’s name is a clever play-on-words that combines the phrases Ivory Towers and hive. While Ivory Towers refers to a state of seclusion for the pursuit of knowledge, the phrase hive alludes to the fact that bees live in a hive-like structure. Also, the majority of the game’s action takes place within the vast expanse of Hivory Towers, which comprises five different themed worlds that can be accessed through Grand Tomes. These huge magical books, which require a certain amount of Pagies to unlock, transport players to unique and exciting worlds. Furthermore, the player can expand each Grand Tome by standing on its podium and using additional Pagies to unlock new sections withing the word. As players navigate through the various sectors of Hivory Towers, they will come face-to-face with the game’s second antagonist, Dr. Quack. Host of the popular game show, Dr. Quack’s Quack-Fire Quiz, the vice-president Dr. Quack challenges players to answer a series of questions. Each correct answer grants the player points and advances them further on the board. However, an incorrect answer or failure to answer within the allotted time will result in a loss of life and potential defeat. Once players have collected any one hundred Pagies they can access Capital B’s office, where the last battle against Capital B takes place. Interestingly, Hivory Towers mimics some of the gameplay features found in Banjo-Kazooie, such as Dr. Quack’s Quiz which is similar to Grunty’s Furnace Fun or Capital B’s dialogue that appears after some time.

» Hivory Towers in Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair

In Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, the factory Hivory Towers returns, serving as the spawn point for players as they embark on their adventure through Royal Stingdom. Situated opposite of Shipwreck Creek, Hivory Towers acts as the gathering spot for Queen Phoebee and her Royal Beettalion Guards, who have been rescued by Yooka and Laylee from other Grand Tomes. While Hivory Towers retains its iconic presence in the game, the entrance leading to the main area with the big golden Capital B statue is no longer functional, making it impossible for the protagonists to enter. However, players can explore a new part of Hivory Towers, aptly named the Impossible Lair, through a Grand Tome found in front of the entrance door. The Impossible Lair serves as the final world in Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair and can be accessed at any point, although it’s not recommended without having enough saved bees of the Royal Beettalion Guards, as the lair is notoriously difficult to conquer. Furthermore, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair offers a special challenge for players in the form of the Golden Try Tonic. This Tonic is granted to players who successfully complete Capital B’s Impossible Lair on their first attempt. However, if a player fails to overcome the challenge on their initial try, they must create a new save file to unlock it.
