Jiggies are an integral part of the Banjo-Kazooie series, and are perhaps the most recognizable symbols of the franchise. These collectible jigsaw pieces are infused with a strong magic, which allows them to open the entrances to the game’s many worlds. As such, Jiggies are an essential component of gameplay, and players must collect them to progress through each of the games in the series. According to the game’s lore, Jiggies are religious artifacts related to the Temple of Jiggywiggy, which is represented in the game as a massive statue of the same name. In fact, the jigsaw pieces are said to be made in the image of Jiggywiggy, further emphasizing their religious significance in the game. Jiggies can be earned in a variety of ways, such as completing various missions, helping characters, playing mini-games, fighting bosses, or sometimes, simply lying on the ground in certain sections of a world. The number and manner in which Jiggies open worlds varies depending on the Banjo-Kazooie game, adding an extra element of unpredictability to the gameplay. In the first game in the series, Banjo-Kazooie, players must find and use Jiggies to fill in missing pieces of a matching portrait hidden somewhere in Gruntilda’s Lair. Also, the number of Jiggies required to open each world increases as players progress through the game, adding an additional layer of challenge to the gameplay. Moreover, it is worth noting that in some of the games in the series, Jiggies are used to open worlds, which is different from subsequent games in which only the total number of Jiggies collected is considered. The first Jiggy in Banjo-Kazooie can be found on a grassy pillar located on the left side near the entrance of Gruntilda’s Lair. This allows players to complete the Mumbo’s Mountain picture and explore the rest of the lair. Overall Jiggies are a core feature of the Banjo-Kazooie games, and their collection is vital to progression through the series. Their religious significance in the game’s lore as well as their various methods of acquisition and usage add an extra layer of depth and interest to the franchise’s gameplay.

» Jiggies in Banjo-Tooie

Similar to Banjo-Kazooie, there are ten Jiggies in Banjo-Tooie to collect in each world, with each one requiring the completion of a specific task. These tasks can range from defeating a boss to solving a tricky puzzle. They are scattered throughout the eight worlds and the game’s main hub world, Isle O’ Hags, and are way harder to obtain compared to Banjo-Kazooie, making the game more challenging and engaging for players. One significant change in Banjo-Tooie is that Jiggies are now required to gain access to Jiggywiggy’s Temple found in the Wooden Hollow of the Isle O’ Hags. The temple serves as the gateway to new playable worlds and where the protagonists can attempt Jiggywiggy’s Challenge. However, to gain entrance to the temple, the duo must find and collect enough Jiggies to meet the requirements set by the lone Disciple of Jiggywiggy. This change in gameplay adds an extra layer of challenge to the game. Once the protagonists enter the temple, they are met by Master Jiggywiggy, who commands the Crystal Jiggy. Successfully completing a Moving Picture Challenge set by Jiggywiggy will allow them to open new playable worlds and expand their adventure to stop the plans of the witch. In Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo would dance around with a Jiggy in hand while Kazooie ate it. However, in Banjo-Tooie, the Jiggy spins around Banjo and Kazooie before flying into the air and disappearing. This change in animation was made by Rare to streamline gameplay and improve the game’s overall aesthetics. The new animation allows for a seamless transition and eliminates the time-consuming process of Banjo holding the Jiggy above his head. Furthermore, this new change ensures that the game’s design remains consistent, regardless of the terrain or situation in which players obtained a Jiggy.

» Jiggies in Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts

In Banjo-Kazooie Nuts and Bolts, Jiggies remain an essential aspect of the game, serving as the primary means by which the protagonists unlock new playable worlds and progress through the game’s various challenges. Similar to previous iterations of the Banjo-Kazooie franchise, players have to complete Jiggy-Challenges in each world, earning at least a Jiggy Rank before they can utilize the world’s Jig-O-Vend. Here, players use the Magic Wrench, which they’ll receive from the Lord of Games to rotate the lever next to it and release one or multiple Jiggies, depending on the number of Jiggy-Challenges they have completed. Once Jiggies have been acquired, Banjo and Kazooie can take them to the Jiggy-Bank next to Mumbo’s Motors, where they will be magically drawn inside, accompanied by the jingle from the first two games of the franchise. With enough Jiggies collected, players can earn a new globe from Lord of Games, which they can then place on their respective podium, thereby unlocking worlds to explore. However, Jiggies are not solely reserved for unlocking worlds. They are also required to unlock additional acts within previously unlocked worlds, affording them access to new Jiggy-Challenges. Banjo-Kazooie Nuts and Bolts features an impressive 131 Jiggies that Banjo and Kazooie can collect, making it the game with the most Jiggies in the series. In addition to collecting Jiggies through Jiggy-Challenges, players can collect Jiggies by earning four T.T. Trophies, or by purchasing them from characters such as Jolly Dodger. The continued importance of Jiggies in the game underscores their significance in the series and their continued relevance to the gameplay mechanics of the franchise. As players progress through the game, they are reminded of the vital role that Jiggies play in unlocking new playable worlds or vehicle parts from Mumbo Jumbo, and expanding their adventure.
