In Yooka-Laylee, the Mollycools are a special type of atom collectible that are vital for unlocking transformations that Yooka and Laylee can use. These cyan-colored molecules are packed with a tremendous amount of energy that can power various machines, such as the D.N.Ray, in order to use them. Each world in the game has a Mollycool, which is typically hidden in a location near Dr. Puzz, a human-octopus hybrid who offers transformation services for the protagonists. Once Yooka and Laylee find a Mollycool they can bring it back to Dr. Puzz, which triggers the activation of the D.N.Ray machine. This device allows them to stand on a small platform and transform into creatures or objects that match the current world’s theme. For instance, in the game’s first world Tribalstack Tropics, players can transform into the Flower Form, which is essential for navigating the forest-like landscape with various ruins and other buildings. Each transformation comes with its own set of abilities, such as shooting projectiles to activate switches, breaking obstacles, and entering holes. These abilities are essential for solving puzzles and accessing new areas that are otherwise inaccessible. Certain bosses in the game Yooka-Laylee can only be defeated while in a specific transformation, adding an extra layer of challenge to the game. It’s interesting to note that the Mollycools functionality in Yooka-Laylee is pretty similar to that of the Glowbos found in the game Banjo-Tooie. However, unlike in Banjo-Tooie where players were able to use Glowbos in any order, the player must find the Mollycool in the current world to use Dr. Puzz’s transformation services. Overall, the Mollycools in Yooka-Laylee play a crucial role in unlocking transformations for Yooka and Laylee in order to reach areas of a world, which they can’t in their normal form.
