Quills are a valuable and recurring type of collectible in the Yooka-Laylee series, serving various functions in each installment. In Yooka-Laylee, Quills were the most prevalent type of collectible in the game and functioned as the game’s currency. The pattern of a Quill consists of yellow and darker yellow sections, with the Quill curving inward at the top. In addition, the protagonists can find bronze, silver, and golden Quills in several of Rextro’s mini-games. These kind of Quills serve as a collectible used to score points in the mini-game with each type of Quill providing a different amount of points. Moreover, Quills can be used to purchase new abilities from a salesman called Trowzer, which Yooka and Laylee can use to access new areas of a world and progress further in the game. The number of purchasable techniques offered by Trowzer differs from world to world and each ability requires a different amount of Quills to purchase. In each Grand Tome of Hivory Towers, Yooka and Laylee can find two hundred Quills scattered throughout the world. The total number of Quills in the first Yooka-Laylee game is one thousand ten, with one thousand of them being located in Grand Tomes and the remaining ones in Shipwreck Creek. Players who manage to find all two hundred Quills in a world are rewarded with a Pagie that is automatically added to their inventory. In Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, the function of Quills differs from the first game. Instead of acquiring new abilities from the salesman Trowzer, they are used to unlock new Tonics that the protagonists have found throughout the game’s hub world Royal Stingdom.

» Quills in Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair

The second game of the franchise Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair features Quills as a key resource that the protagonists can find in every world inside Grand Tomes. The amount of Quills available in each world varies, ranging from two hundred to seven hundred Quills, which can be used to purchase Tonics scattered throughout the game’s hub world, Royal Stingdom. To assist players in their search for Tonics, friendly characters known as Plankers can be found in various locations in the hub world, providing hints about nearby Tonics in exchange for Quills. Tonics are a vital gameplay element in Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, and it is important to choose them wisely. Equipping different Play-Tonics can have a significant impact on the Quills Multiplier at the end of a world. Using too many positive Tonics, for instance, can significantly decrease the amount of Quills earned, making it harder to acquire new Play-Tonics. In addition to seeking out Tonics, players can challenge themselves to find Ghost Quills in each world. These Quills come in five different colors, each with its own behavior, and can be found in breakable crates or floating in the air. Although most Ghost Quills are optional for hundred percent completion, it’s still highly recommended to find and complete every Ghost Quills challenge, as some may contain a T.W.I.T Coin, which is needed for a hundred percent completion. Players should note that the difficulty of finding Ghost Quills increases as they progress through the game, and some worlds have Quills that are more challenging to reach. Strategizing and planning accordingly is key to ensuring that players have enough Quills to unlock all Play-Tonics in the game. Careful consideration of which Tonics to equip and a keen eye for finding Ghost Quills will go a long way in achieving success.
