The Great Rampo

The Great Rampo serves as a boss in the original Yooka Laylee and can be found in Tribalstack Tropics, the first world players explore. He resides across a bridge atop Rampo’s Temple, where players must overcome his fiery attacks to obtain a valuable Pagie. This distinctive character is a brown rectangular creature made of stone tiles with a unique appearance featuring just two visible teeth, one on top and one on bottom. His orange eye emits a subtle glow and is surrounded by nine stone squares that pulsate while spinning. Bramble like vegetation grows from his upper body with moss trailing downward, and stone shaped eyebrows complete his look. Rampo displays an aggressive and malicious attitude toward Yooka and Laylee, initially mistaking them for window salesmen upon their first encounter. This misunderstanding triggers his defensive mode where he releases wooden logs down the ramp to prevent players from reaching him. The name Rampo cleverly references the Banjo Kazooie series by adding an ‘o’ to the word ramp. After defeating him, players earn the Slippery Slope achievement, along with a golden Pagie. This victory represents a significant accomplishment while allowing players to continue exploring Tribalstack Tropics and discovering its various collectibles. In the sequel Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair, The Great Rampo returns as a puzzle challenge guarding a valuable Tonic. Players find him in a Royal Stingdom cave blocking a river path. To progress, they must solve a puzzle to access a Bomb Berries Bush which can be used to shatter his teeth and claim the Tonic behind him.

» Battle Procedure

The battle against The Great Rampo presents players with a challenge as he unleashes numerous wooden logs attempting to block their progress. To succeed, players must utilize Buddy Roll to navigate the ramp while avoiding these hazardous obstacles. Failure to dodge results in damage, and being knocked down, forcing players to restart their approach. Upon reaching Rampo, players face his fearsome teeth which must be destroyed using Yooka’s Tail Twirl. After this initial success, Rampo expresses his displeasure by blowing players away, requiring them to navigate the ramp again as additional logs create an increasingly difficult obstacle course. Rampo then unleashes a powerful fire blast from his mouth which players have to avoid or risk tumbling down the ramp. After the fire subsides, four teeth spawn in his mouth which players must shatter again with the Tail Twirl move. Following two rounds of tooth destruction, players face a final barrage of logs on all three sides of the ramp, significantly increasing the difficulty. Players must jump over these logs since rolling to the side no longer works as an evasion tactic. Upon reaching Rampo one final time and destroying his teeth, players defeat him and can collect the golden Pagie behind him. Interestingly, there exists a strategic approach to make this battle much easier. By unlocking Laylee’s Flappy Flight technique, players can bypass the treacherous ramp and logs entirely by simply flying directly to Rampo’s platform, eliminating the need to dodge obstacles.
