Play-Tonics, also referred as Tonic, are game modifiers that have become an essential aspect of the Yooka-Laylee series, providing a unique twist to the classic gameplay. These Tonics, as they are often called, are unlockable upgrades that enable the protagonists to enhance their abilities and stats while providing the game with entertaining graphical effects. In Yooka-Laylee, players can obtain Play-Tonics from a supportive character called Vendi, a yellow vending machine with a red ribbon on her head, who can be found in every world, as well as multiple times throughout the game’s hub world, Hivory Towers. They come with a caveat, which is that only one Play-Tonic upgrade can be used at a time. Despite this, all of the Play-Tonics unlocked on one save file can be found on others, providing the player with an additional challenge or early access to powerful Play-Tonics at the beginning of a new playthrough. Also, they reappear in Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, and this time, they have a much bigger presence. Players can receive hints on these locations for the cost of Quills by several Plankers who are close by. In Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, there are sixty-six Tonics in total, each providing different enhancements or challenges for the player. Finally, Play-Tonics have become a vital component of the Yooka-Laylee franchise, enabling the player to discover new and exciting gameplay, while adding a fresh twist to the traditional platformer genre. With Tonics, players can take Yooka and Laylee’s performance to new heights and experience the game in a new and exciting way.
