Piranha Form

Piranha Form banner placeholder

Piranha Form is the aquatic D.N.Ray transformation in Moodymaze Marsh, the third Grand Tome of Yooka-Laylee. Dr. Puzz calls the result a Shoal: the duo become a school of eighteen sharp-toothed fish, with eleven green fish resembling Yooka and seven purple fish resembling Laylee. Their bodies move together under the player’s control, giving the transformation a much wider silhouette than the ordinary swimming duo. It also returns in Yooka-Replaylee, where its main underwater rescue has been revised. The form swims freely without an air limit and uses its bite to attack enemies and remove obstructions such as the bones in Dusky Duct. The movement controls steer the school, Jump makes it swim upward, Crouch takes it downward and Attack triggers the bite. This allows deliberate changes of depth through the marsh’s submerged passages, rather than relying on the ordinary swimming rhythm or walking along the bottom inside Buddy Bubble. Piranhas can also pass through the thorny growths that obstruct the normal duo, opening a route to a lake-floor Pagie and the entrance of their dedicated challenge. That resistance does not make them invulnerable: electrical barriers and the moving hazards inside the duct still need to be negotiated. Their underwater abilities replace Yooka and Laylee’s normal move set, so an exposed pressure plate, a land-based puzzle or an obstacle requiring Sonar Shot may call for a return to their usual bodies. Once the local Mollycool has powered the D.N.Ray, Puzz can produce the Shoal again without another payment or another collectible. In the original game, the machine’s platform also provides a way to restore the duo before continuing the marsh’s other tasks. The remake additionally displays a direct Exit command while transformed.

Purifying the Lagoon and Finding the Mollycool

In the original Yooka-Laylee, preparing the central lagoon is part of reaching the Mollycool that powers this transformation. Find Jolly the Trolley on the shore near Dr. Puzz and speak to him about the polluted water. His purification mechanism begins with a crate inside a grated enclosure. Use Lizard Lash to pull the crate onto the nearby switch, then go out to the platform in the lagoon and Buddy Slam its central button. This starts a twenty-five-second circuit around four outer platforms. Reach all four and slam their switches before time runs out to clean the water and earn Jolly’s Pagie. Lizard Lash is sold by Trowzer in Moodymaze Marsh for sixty Quills, while Buddy Slam comes from his original Tribalstack Tropics lessons for thirty. Having both moves before starting the shoreline mechanism avoids interrupting the task for another lesson. With the lagoon safe to explore, use Buddy Bubble to descend to its floor and look for the cylindrical container with mushrooms growing on its lid. The free Buddy Bubble lesson is learned in Hivory Towers, whereas Sonar ’Splosion is another sixty-Quill purchase from the marsh’s Trowzer. Stand on the cylinder and use Sonar ’Splosion to clear the mushrooms together. Its lid opens, allowing the Mollycool to be collected from inside. Bring the crystal back to Dr. Puzz, whose machine stands on the opposite shore from Jolly, and speak to her before stepping onto the D.N.Ray platform and using Interact. This produces the Piranha Form and makes its thorn-resistant swimming available. The purification reward and the Mollycool serve different purposes: Jolly’s Pagie is collected for completing his mechanism, while the crystal unlocks the local machine. Neither requires the Grand Tome’s expansion, so the Shoal and its original underwater rewards can be obtained during the first visit once the necessary moves have been learned.

The Thorn Pagie, Dusky Duct and Dolly’s Rescue

Two original Pagies directly use the Shoal’s resistance to thorns. For the first, swim into the lagoon in front of the D.N.Ray and search the lake floor for the Pagie enclosed by thorny roots. The fish can pass into this growth and collect it without the damage suffered by the normal duo. The longer task begins at the thorn-covered pipe near the green light beside the entrance to Murky Passage. Enter as the Shoal to reach Dusky Duct, where the first gate is held shut by mechanisms in two side passages. Swim into each passage when its fan pauses and bite away the bones resting on the pressure plate. Removing the bones releases the plate; clearing both sides opens the central gate. Continue past the blue electrical barriers and into the descending cylindrical shaft, steering diagonally between the beams rather than plunging straight through them. The route carries on through submerged rooms, hostile jellyfish and another vertical stretch before reaching the green-lit recess containing Dolly the Trolley. Bite away the bones trapping her, then speak to her to receive the rescue Pagie. Dolly remains in the duct after this conversation, so the task does not involve towing her through the electrical course or escorting her to Jolly. Use the exit pipe to return to the lagoon. The duct’s enemies also provide an opportunity to work toward Salmon, the original Tonic unlocked by defeating ten underwater enemies. Salmon extends the ordinary duo’s underwater breathing time; the fish themselves already have unlimited air. Elsewhere in the marsh, the submerged pool beneath Swampy Station’s grating contains the green Ghost Writer. The Shoal can explore this pool and chase it, although Buddy Bubble also gives the normal duo a route to the collectible. Catching it contributes to the original world’s five-Ghost-Writer set rather than awarding a separate Pagie immediately. The nearby Murky Passage course is another distinction to keep in mind: its underwater pressure plates and currents belong to a separate challenge and use the ordinary duo’s abilities. Return to the D.N.Ray when those moves are needed instead of treating every submerged pipe or plate as part of Dolly’s rescue.

Shoal Business in Yooka-Replaylee

Yooka-Replaylee retains the swimming school but changes the route to its Mollycool and the identity of the trolley at the end of Dusky Duct. The central lagoon is usable without completing the original purification sequence first. Search underwater for the wooden crate chained above the round metal container, smash the crate and collect the Mollycool, then take it to Dr. Puzz on the shore opposite Jolly. The original instruction to clear mushrooms from a cylinder with Sonar ’Splosion therefore does not describe the remake’s pickup. After transforming, use the fish’s bite on the roots protecting the lake-floor Pagie to complete Thorn Free. The thorned pipe leads to Shoal Business, the remake’s version of the duct rescue. Its switches again depend on clearing bones and vegetation from the mechanisms, while fans, rising currents and electrical barriers govern movement between the gated sections. Watch the direction of a current before entering its shaft, use the separate up and down inputs to stay aligned with an opening and clear the obstruction on each plate before looking for the next gate. The trolley waiting at the far end is Ollie, rather than the original game’s Dolly. Free him from the surrounding blockage and finish the encounter to receive the challenge’s Pagie; following the original name or expecting a return trip with Dolly would mix two versions of the quest. The fish remain useful for inspecting the lagoon and its underwater passages after the rescue. Swampy Station’s Ghost Writer is now Evie, whose capture awards its own Pagie under the remake’s revised Ghost Writer rewards. This is separate from both Thorn Free and Shoal Business. The PlayStation control display shows Cross for Swim Up, L2 for Swim Down, Square for Attack and R2 for Exit. Other controller layouts use their corresponding actions, so the essential distinction is between changing depth, biting and leaving the form. Exit restores Yooka and Laylee without a journey back to Puzz, allowing land-based errands and puzzles requiring the ordinary move set to resume nearby. The original Salmon kill requirement should likewise be kept with the original game, since the remake reorganises Tonics and their acquisition.
