Chilli Billi

Chilli Billi banner placeholder

Chilli Billi is the red dragon living at the summit of the Lava Side of Hailfire Peaks in Banjo-Tooie. Introduced as the Hot ’n’ Spicy Dragon, he shares the world’s paired boss objective with his blue brother, Chilly Willy, who occupies the Icy Side. Chilli has a large head, green eyes, sharp white teeth and a long green tongue. Yellow horns and spines project from the red scales, while a yellow-orange underside runs down his exceptionally long neck. Most of that neck rises out of the summit’s lava pool during the battle, hiding the small body and wings beneath it until his departure. The contrast becomes visible when he finally climbs out and flies away. Before Banjo and Kazooie reach him, he interferes with their exploration from above. His roar warns of an approaching fireball, and his challenge to visitors presents the volcano as territory for which he expects a paid tour. The projectiles follow the pair around exposed areas of the Lava Side, making cover useful while they explore. Their destructive force also opens the route to his own home, since one can break the ruined structure concealing a Flight Pad. At the summit he gives the intruders a different role, mistaking them for pizza delivery workers and insisting that Banjo’s backpack contains his order. The misunderstanding leads to a fight in which the heroes use Ice Eggs to turn the surrounding cannons against him. Defeating Chilli ends his bombardment of the Lava Side, but the shared reward depends on whether Chilly has also been beaten. His later references include a representation among Banjoland’s museum displays in Nuts & Bolts, while the dragon brothers’ demand for pizza returns as a question during Gruntilda’s HAG 1 battle.

Reaching the Lava Summit

Hailfire Peaks opens through Jiggywiggy’s 36-Jiggy challenge, with the entrance reached from Cliff Top in the Isle o’ Hags. Ice Eggs are the important preparation for Chilli’s battle. Jamjars teaches them at Cliff Top once the player has collected 200 Notes, so the required ammunition can be obtained before entering the world. The Notes qualify the lesson rather than being paid away. Chilli’s home is high above the initial Lava Side routes, and walking towards the summit from below does not by itself reach the arena. Find the cracked temple-like ruin beneath Mumbo’s Skull and position the pair on it while Chilli prepares his next fireball. Listen for the warning roar and move clear as the projectile arrives, allowing it to smash the structure instead. The rubble exposes a Flight Pad and feathers, turning the dragon’s own attack into the means of reaching him. Take off from the revealed pad and climb towards the high entrance ledge on the volcano. Gain enough height to land at the opening, then go through the tunnel rather than searching the lower paths for a direct climb into the pool. Egg supplies along the approach provide an opportunity to replenish ammunition, and the wooden ladder at the end leads into the summit encounter. The lava pool is surrounded by a narrow, broken ring of solid ground with cannon positions around it. Those weapons are the means of damaging Chilli and provide cover from his fireballs, so note their locations before moving away from the arrival point. The gaps in the ring also matter once the dragon lowers the cannons and brings out his tongue. A missed jump can carry the pair off the ledge even when the attack itself has been cleared. Chilly’s separate boots-and-climbing route is not a prerequisite for this approach: the player can confront either brother first.

Ice Egg Cannons and the Tongue Sweep

Chilli Billi has six health when he is the first dragon fought, or twelve if Chilly Willy has already been defeated. The brother encountered second attacks faster as well as taking twice as many hits. Chilli’s red appearance therefore does not imply a permanently shorter battle, and the order shown in a walkthrough is only one possible route. Stand behind a cannon and fire an Ice Egg into the rear opening to make it launch an enlarged icy shot into his head. The cannon’s body shields the pair from incoming fireballs while they line up the next shot. Unsuitable eggs prompt Chilli to dismiss the attack as too feeble to hurt his fiery body; ordinary eggs and close attacks do not substitute for the cannon’s ice shot. Watch the muzzle and the dragon’s reaction so that shots are fired while the weapon is available. Each cannon can deliver three damaging hits before it is exhausted and disappears. Between firing opportunities, the cannons lower and Chilli stretches his tongue across the walkway, sweeping it around the pool. Jump over it while keeping a safe landing area in view. His long reach and the gaps between platforms make a backward retreat risky, especially if a hit knocks the pair towards the edge. Move around the ring to another usable cannon when the sweep ends, then resume firing from behind its cover. The shorter encounter requires six successful cannon shots overall; the twelve-health encounter uses the three-hit capacity of all four positions. Tongue attacks interrupt the fight in either case, so the three-shot capacity should not be taken as a promise of three uninterrupted shots before every sweep. Keep Ice Eggs selected while repositioning, and use the periods without a raised cannon to concentrate on movement. After the final hit, Chilli throws back his head and concedes. The fight stops at that point, allowing the farewell conversation and, when both brothers have been beaten, the reward scene to take place.

Pizza Orders, the Shared Jiggy and Departure

If Chilli Billi is the first brother approached, he greets Banjo as the long-awaited pizza delivery boy. Banjo explains that they are local Jiggy hunters, but Chilli accuses him of hiding a twelve-foot Spicy Meat Special in the backpack. Kazooie denies having it, and the hungry dragon decides to eat the pair instead. When Chilly has already been beaten, Chilli recognizes the supposed delivery boy as the one who attacked his brother. Banjo points out that the other dragon tried to eat them, while Kazooie asks whether Chilli wants pizza too. He confirms the Spicy Meat Special order and refuses to accept that they have brought none. A return after losing the battle replaces that introduction with a shorter demand for his pizza and another threat to feast on Banjo’s furry hide. These conversations do not start a food-delivery task: the encounter is resolved by using the cannons. If Chilli is defeated first, he changes his mind about his own order but warns that his brother will still want his. He then leaves without awarding a Cheato Page or a separate Jiggy. The pair’s objective remains open until Chilly is defeated on the Icy Side. If Chilli is the second dragon beaten, he gives up on pizza and announces that he will get a takeaway instead. Kazooie stops him to ask for a trophy for defeating both brothers, and he produces their single shared Jiggy. After that exchange he rises out of the lava, revealing the little body beneath the huge neck, and flies away to look for a couple of Big Al Burgers. His departure ends the Fire Side’s long-range attacks, just as Chilly’s departure ends the corresponding attacks on the Icy Side. The brothers remain available through the game’s boss replay after their encounters have been cleared, but the adventure reward is one Jiggy for the pair.
