Chilly Willy

Chilly Willy banner placeholder

Chilly Willy is the blue dragon living in the icy summit pool of Hailfire Peaks in Banjo-Tooie. His title is Cold ’n’ Icy Dragon, and his brother, Chilli Billi, occupies the volcano on the world’s Fire Side. Chilly’s large angular head, green eyes, sharp teeth and crystalline-looking horns rise above a long neck with a pale segmented underside. Much of his body stays beneath the water during the fight, making the head and neck appear enormous compared with the small winged body revealed when he flies away. His green tongue is long enough to reach the walkway surrounding the pool, turning an otherwise expressive part of his face into a weapon against Banjo and Kazooie. The arena sits high above the clouds, with a narrow snowy rim, gaps in the ledge and four cannon positions around the water. Chilly also threatens the heroes before they reach it. On the Icy Side, he objects to trespassing on his glacier and launches iceballs towards them, interrupting ordinary exploration with a roar and incoming projectiles. Cover and entrances such as Icicle Grotto provide shelter, while moving clear of the impact point allows travel between them. One of these attacks can also be turned to the heroes’ advantage when it strikes Biggafoot, who guards the equipment needed for the standard climb to Chilly’s summit. Like his brother, the dragon is waiting for a pizza delivery and responds badly when the bear and bird arrive without his meal. His dialogue, combat endurance and part in the reward sequence depend on which of the two brothers has already been defeated.

Biggafoot and the Route to the Icy Summit

Hailfire Peaks opens through Jiggywiggy’s 36-Jiggy challenge, with its entrance reached from Cliff Top and opening onto the Fire Side. Reach the Icy Side through the mountain’s connecting passages, then locate Biggafoot’s alcove near the frozen river and the marked climbing route. The standard approach requires Claw Clamber Boots, taught by Jamjars on Floor 1 of Grunty Industries, near the Split-Up Pads, once 505 Notes have been collected. Having the boots in view does not replace learning how to use them. Biggafoot refuses to let the pair take his shoes, but standing near him while Chilly is still bombarding the area draws an iceball into the alcove. The projectile strikes his oversized foot, and he leaves in pain, exposing the boots. Put them on and follow the frozen river to the footprint-marked wall. Continue up the climbing route towards the higher ledge and summit tunnel, moving directly while the boots’ timer is active. Another pair is available on the upper route, and nearby health and egg supplies provide a chance to prepare before entering. Pass through the tunnel, replenish Fire Eggs as needed, then climb the wooden ladder to trigger the summit encounter. Fire Eggs are the required element for Chilly’s cannon battle; Jamjars teaches them much earlier on Plateau in the Isle o’ Hags, with 45 collected Notes. Those Note totals qualify the lessons rather than being separate fees deducted from the collection. Ice Eggs are needed for Chilli Billi on the opposite side, so keep the two ammunition types distinct when preparing for the paired objective. The climb ends at Chilly’s icy pool, where the cannons and snowy perimeter replace the wider exploration area as the fighting space. Defeating him stops his local bombardment, making later journeys through the Icy Side easier.

Fire Egg Cannons and the Tongue Sweep

During normal adventure progression, Chilly Willy has six health if he is the first brother fought, or twelve if Chilli Billi has already been defeated. The dragon fought second is faster and takes the longer battle, so twelve is not an inherent health value that applies to every first visit to Chilly. In either case, damage is dealt through the cannons around the pool. Move behind an available cannon and aim a Fire Egg into its rear opening; the cannon launches an enlarged fiery shot into the dragon’s head. Its body also provides cover from the iceballs, making a position behind the cannon useful for both aiming and defense. Shooting an unsuitable egg prompts Chilly to boast that it cannot hurt his frosty body. Close attacks and ordinary eggs do not replace the cannon’s elemental shot. Fire again when the opening permits, watching both the hit reaction and the incoming ice. Each cannon can deliver three damaging shots before it is used up and disappears. The disappearing weapons change the safe positions around the ring: when the cannons lower, Chilly brings out his long tongue and sweeps it across the walkway. Jump over the tongue, keeping enough room to land safely rather than backing towards the edge of the arena. The perimeter also has gaps, so a jump that clears the tongue can still be dangerous if it carries the pair into open space. Being struck can knock them away from the ledge, making careful movement between cannon positions as important as aiming. When the sweep ends and the remaining cannons return, continue around to one that has not been exhausted. In the twelve-hit battle, all four cannon positions are needed for their three-hit contributions. The six-hit version needs fewer successful shots overall, but retains the same elemental requirement and alternation between firing and tongue attacks. Keep moving whenever there is no cannon available to shelter behind, then use the next firing opportunity. Once the last health point is removed, Chilly stops the fight and admits that he has had enough.

Pizza, Fight Order and the Shared Reward

The dragon conversations acknowledge which brother the player reached first. If Chilly is encountered before Chilli Billi, he initially takes Banjo for the pizza delivery boy. Banjo identifies the pair as local Jiggy hunters, but Chilly accuses them of concealing his twelve-foot Anchovy Deluxe in the backpack. Kazooie denies it, and the hungry dragon decides to eat the heroes instead. If Chilli Billi has already been defeated, Chilly recognizes the supposed delivery boy as the one who beat up his brother. Banjo explains that the other dragon tried to eat them, while Kazooie asks whether Chilly wants pizza too. He confirms his Anchovy Deluxe order, refuses to believe that they have none, and demands the food. On retries, he asks whether they have brought the pizza yet and threatens to chew their bones again when Kazooie says no. Defeating Chilly first makes him abandon his own demand while warning that his brother will still want his meal. The shared dragon objective remains unfinished until Chilli Billi is defeated as well. If Chilly is the second brother beaten, he decides to obtain a takeaway instead, and Kazooie stops him to request a trophy for defeating both dragons. He supplies the pair’s single Jiggy before flying away and wondering which way to go for McJiggy’s fly-through. The first victory does not award a Cheato Page, and there is no separate Jiggy from each brother. Clearing Chilly’s encounter removes the Ice Side attacks; clearing Chilli Billi’s removes the corresponding Fire Side attacks. Their appetite also becomes quiz material: Tower of Tragedy includes Chilly’s name among its Hailfire Peaks questions, while Gruntilda’s later HAG 1 questions can ask what the dragon brothers wanted to eat. Both encounters can be revisited through boss replay after being cleared.
