Lord Woo Fak Fak

Lord Woo Fak Fak banner placeholder

Lord Woo Fak Fak is the giant anglerfish guarding a Jiggy inside Davy Jones’ Locker in Jolly Roger’s Lagoon in Banjo-Tooie. His announced title is Self-Important Anglerfish, and his manner of introducing himself matches it: he expects intruders to recognize his name and reacts furiously to being disturbed. His enormous mottled green body fills much of the cramped underwater room. Long pointed teeth surround the broad red mouth, spiny fins project from his back and sides, and a glowing yellow lure hangs from a stalk above his head. Six yellow boils along his flanks become important once the fighting starts, while his eyes remain shut through the first phase. The introductory scene follows the light towards the apparent treasure before revealing the fish behind it. Waking from his sleep, Lord Woo demands to know who has entered his locker. Banjo offers the excuse that they have brought his mail, but the fish accuses them of intending to steal the Jiggy and drain the room, leaving him stranded on the bottom. Kazooie’s agreement turns the exchange into a threat of a watery grave. On a return after losing, his shorter greeting asks whether the pair know who he is before promising to destroy them. His own statements suggest a grand opinion of his past, including a boast about a hundred years of oceanic tyranny when he is beaten. King Jingaling provides a different connection: in his zombified state, the king says that he and Lord Woo go back a long way and often fish together, although he is not supposed to tell anyone. The battle ends with the anglerfish floating upside down, but he remains in the locker and continues responding to the heroes after they collect his Jiggy.

Reaching Davy Jones’ Locker

Jolly Roger’s Lagoon opens at 14 Jiggies and is entered from Cliff Top in the Isle o’ Hags. Before exploring its depths, give the local Glowbo to Mumbo Jumbo and take him to the pad by the harbor. His Sunlight spell oxygenates the water, allowing Banjo and Kazooie to remain submerged throughout the lagoon without running out of air. Return to his Skull to regain the pair, then prepare the attacks needed for the boss. Sub-Aqua Egg Aiming, taught by Jamjars in Jolly’s spare room at 275 collected Notes, lets Kazooie fire eggs while Banjo swims. The room can be opened by renting it from Jolly or by blasting the door with a Grenade Egg. Carry Grenade Eggs for the fight and the cracked locker entrance. Alternatively, visit Humba Wumba in the chamber reached from Atlantis and give her a Glowbo to become the Submarine. Its unlimited torpedoes remove the need to replenish eggs during the battle, while its movement and aiming provide another way to navigate the room. The transformation is an option rather than a requirement to defeat Lord Woo. Swim through the underwater passages towards the Locker Cavern and activate its warp pad to simplify return visits. Look for the large cracked locker marked D. Jones among the other named lockers. Blast the damaged front with a Grenade Egg or torpedo, replenish health from the nearby beehive if needed, then enter. The introductory scene carries the player into the encounter, so make the choice between the normal pair and Submarine before crossing inside. Davy Jones’ Locker provides little room to stand back: the boss turns within the same enclosed space in which the player swims, and his broad body can obstruct the view of the opposite side. Keep track of the walls and floor while moving around him, especially when looking for the next vulnerable boil or dropping down for supplies.

The Six Boils and the Eye Phase

The first health counter represents six boils, with three along each side of Lord Woo Fak Fak’s body. Only one flashes at a time, marking the spot that can currently be damaged. Swim around his flank until that target is visible and shoot it with a Grenade Egg or the Submarine’s torpedo. A successful hit bursts the boil, releases red particles into the water and removes one health point; another boil then begins flashing. Firing at the unlit spots wastes ammunition, so locate the next target before continuing. Lord Woo attacks even while his eyes are closed, sending large energy projectiles towards the player from the direction of his lure. Move aside when he turns and prepares to fire, then resume aiming rather than remaining still beside the next boil. Passing beneath or around him can create space to avoid a shot, but the walls limit how far the player can retreat. Contact with his body alone can cause a reaction without removing health; the energy attacks are the more important danger. Egg nests on the locker floor provide replacement ammunition for the normal pair, though descending to collect them leaves the player temporarily occupied away from the target. The Submarine avoids that supply problem through its unlimited torpedoes. Destroying the sixth boil begins a second phase instead of ending the fight. Lord Woo complains about attacks on a blind fish, opens his eyes and receives another six-point health counter. The eyes are now the targets, requiring six further successful hits overall. Move into a position where a shot can reach them, fire and shift away from the return attack. His aim improves now that he can see, and he also releases bubbles that can trap the player, preventing movement and leaving an opening for an energy blast. Avoid lingering directly in front of his mouth while waiting for another chance to shoot. Continue alternating clear eye shots with evasive movement until the second counter is empty. His lure goes dark, he turns belly up and the Jiggy becomes available for collection. Neither destroying only the boils nor merely reaching the new phase completes the encounter.

After Defeat and Later References

Lord Woo Fak Fak’s defeat leaves him floating upside down in the locker, where approaching his face or continuing to shoot him produces more dialogue. He may ask whether the heroes know who he is, request some time alone or declare that, to be quite frank, he fought well. Other remarks claim that this happens regularly and that he quite likes being upside down. Continued attacks prompt him to tell the pair to stop, insist that he is dead and has no more Jiggies, invoke his acquaintance with their father or say that he used to be a hero. These exchanges supply fragments of how he presents himself rather than a separate rescue task or another reward. The game does not identify the father he means or explain the claimed heroic past, and his continuing speech and blinking remain part of the scene after his dramatic surrender. The fight can also be revisited through boss replay. His name later receives a development explanation in Rare’s making-of account: it refers to engineer Paul Machacek swearing when code went wrong and celebrating when a problem was fixed. The character’s later references extend beyond his underwater room. Nuts & Bolts includes his portrait among Banjoland’s displays, while the name The Fak Fak appears on a building near Showdown Town’s pier. Those are visual references to the fish rather than a return of his boss fight. His name and announced title also appear among Tower of Tragedy’s questions in Tooie. Outside the Banjo games, the original battle music is included as Vs. Lord Woo Fak Fak in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Banjo & Kazooie Challenger Pack, making it available for battles on Spiral Mountain. This carries the encounter’s music into that game without introducing the anglerfish himself as a fighter.
