The Tower of Tragedy Quiz is Gruntilda’s three-round game show in Banjo-Tooie, held inside Cauldron Keep after the final encounter with Klungo. Banjo and Kazooie compete against the witch’s sisters, Mingella and Blobbelda, while a one-ton weight hangs over each contestant. Gruntilda tests knowledge of the adventure through written questions and images of its characters, rooms and objects. Fast answers earn points, mistakes deduct them and the lowest-scoring contestant faces the falling weight. Surviving the two elimination rounds leads to a solo challenge against Gruntilda’s target score. Victory opens the way to the life-restoring events in the gun chamber, but the HAG 1 battle remains a separate encounter. This guide explains access, controls, scoring and all three rounds, followed by a world-by-world answer reference and the picture-question clues. The prompts below use original lookup wording rather than reproducing the entire game script.
Reaching the Tower
Collect 55 Jiggies and complete the corresponding challenge in Jiggywiggy’s Temple to open Cauldron Keep. Return to Quagmire and use the Claw Clamber Boots to follow the marked climbing route up to the entrance. Inside the gatehouse, defeat Klungo for the third time. His defeat ends his service to Gruntilda and opens the question-mark doorway leading to the quiz. The 55-Jiggy threshold grants access to this part of the keep; the 70-Jiggy challenge is required later for the final rooftop confrontation. Take the time to identify the room’s contestants, signs and objects, because Gruntilda can ask about the quiz chamber as well as the worlds already explored.
Buzzing In and Choosing an Answer
On Nintendo 64, press B to buzz in, move the Control Stick to the answer you want and press A to confirm. Follow the displayed controls on Xbox. Buzzing can interrupt Gruntilda before she finishes reading, which gives you a chance to beat the sisters to a familiar question but also hides information you may still need. After you claim the question, you have only five seconds to select an answer. The three choices are not a reason to guess before recognizing the subject. For picture questions, first observe the scene, count repeated objects and read any writing; once you interrupt, you may be asked about a detail you failed to notice. The same short question can accompany different images, so its wording alone is insufficient.
Scoring and the Round Timer
Each round lasts 180 seconds. A correct first answer earns two points, while an incorrect first answer subtracts two, and scores can fall below zero. A question answered incorrectly can be offered to the remaining contestants for a one-point rebound; a wrong rebound costs one point. The round clock limits how many questions can be attempted, so long hesitation can be costly even when it avoids a wrong answer. During the elimination rounds, the relevant result is your position relative to the sisters. Keep a clear lead over the lowest score instead of relying on an unverified tie outcome. In the solo round, the target is fixed, and passing an unknown question is often better than risking a deduction.
Round One: One Gets Tonned
The opening round includes Banjo and Kazooie, Mingella and Blobbelda. All start from zero, and the contestant with the lowest score when time expires is eliminated beneath the weight. You need to finish ahead of at least one sister to continue. Buzz promptly on names, locations and familiar tasks that you can recognize from the question’s opening words, but examine picture details before claiming them. If another contestant makes a mistake, use the rebound when you know the answer rather than surrendering a safe point. The advantage of an early lead is that it gives you room to leave genuinely uncertain questions to the opponents instead of turning every obscure detail into a two-point gamble.
Round Two: Which Gets Squished?
The remaining sister becomes your only opponent in the second round. The same buzzer and scoring rules apply, but there is now only one rival below whom you must not finish. A correct first answer both improves your score and prevents her from taking those points, so useful questions should be claimed quickly. Pay particular attention to questions asking for an absent object, an invented place name or a false statement: recognizing a real character in one choice does not make that choice correct when the question asks which one is missing. At the end of the round, the losing sister is crushed, leaving the pair to face Gruntilda’s last test.
Round Three: Banjo Lost or Grunty Squashed?
The final round removes the opposing contestants and asks you to beat a target of 15 points within three minutes. Aim for at least 16 rather than treating 15 as a safe stopping point. Answer choices remain hidden until you buzz, so do not use the previous rounds’ visible possibilities as a reason to assume the answer is obvious. On Nintendo 64, Z passes a question you do not know; use the corresponding pass prompt in other releases. Eight clean two-point answers are enough, while a wrong answer erases the value of a previous correct one. Once you have passed the target, protect that score instead of guessing for an unnecessary larger total.
Written Questions and Answers
The following reference groups ordinary questions by world and then collects the wider game and quiz-room facts. Several questions test a specific offered answer rather than every true fact about a location. For example, an “odd one out” answer remains the absent item, and a deliberately vague numeric option such as “More than 9” must be recognized as written. These answers do not use Furnace Fun’s randomized Brentilda system. HAG 1’s battle questions are a separate pool, so the later 70-Jiggy gate and its combat-specific riddles are not presented here as an extra Tower round.

Picture Questions and Observation
Gruntilda’s pictures can ask for a world, a character, a room name or a small detail that disappears before the choices appear. While the image is visible, read signs, note colors and count repeated objects such as windows, beds, fans or bottles. The rows below name the subject of each documented clue so that repeated questions such as “Where is this?” are not mistaken for one fixed question. Compare both the pictured object and the available answers: a different image can use similar wording. Some counts deliberately use approximate or comparative answer labels. These are lookup clues for the game’s pictures, not a replacement set of fabricated screenshots.

Release Differences
The Nintendo 64 and Xbox versions retain the quiz’s basic three-round structure, but some references to Nintendo characters, controllers or physical packaging were changed in the Xbox release. Bottles’ daughter’s Donkey Kong doll is called an adorable gorilla in the Xbox answer, for example. Questions about the Banjo-Tooie Arcade artwork use that release’s picture, where the pair are flying, and an Xbox-era question names Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts as their latest adventure. Treat those as questions written for the release rather than current news about the series. When a packaging or controller question appears, read its exact wording and use the version being played; the HAG 1 question bank includes additional release-specific references beyond the ordinary Tower list.
After Winning the Quiz
Gruntilda escapes the threat of her own show and retreats higher into the keep. The pair leave the chamber as the weight over their position drops, and the story continues in the B.O.B. gun room. The stolen life force is returned to King Jingaling and Bottles, reversing the damage inflicted earlier in the adventure. Use Dingpot in this part of the keep to restore health and supplies before climbing toward the final encounter. The next progression gate requires 70 Jiggies and completion of Jiggywiggy’s corresponding challenge. Reaching or winning the Tower is not the same as defeating HAG 1: the later battle has its own attacks and questions, with correct responses affecting Gruntilda’s attack speed.
Replay and Multiplayer
After the Tower has been completed, its quiz can be revisited through the game’s replay and multiplayer options. The multiplayer version supports two to four players and uses Mumbo Jumbo, Jamjars, Banjo and Kazooie, and Humba Wumba as its contestants. The controller slots determine the character rather than offering the story’s sisters as selectable competitors. Different score and time settings let players contest the same kind of game knowledge without repeating the entire adventure. Study the picture details just as carefully as in story mode: a human opponent can buzz before you have finished counting, and there is no benefit in assuming that familiarity with a room guarantees the particular detail being asked.
