Unga Bunga Tribe

Unga Bunga Tribe banner placeholder

The Unga Bunga Tribe is a group of three cavemen encountered in and around the caves of Terrydactyland in Banjo-Tooie. Their activities connect several otherwise separate objectives: one sleeps beside a relic stolen from Mayahem Temple, another decides who may enter the tribe’s cave, and a third blocks the neighbouring Oogle Boogles from receiving help. They claim that they should rule Terrydactyland and dismiss the Oogle Boogles’ wish to share it. Banjo and Kazooie deal with the three members through stealth, ordinary conversation and a much larger dinosaur transformation, respectively. The tribe is also remembered in Gruntilda’s questions and the Character Parade, where an unfortunate caveman is introduced as Lunch.

The Tribe and the Stolen Relic

The Unga Bungas are heavyset human cavemen with large noses, shaggy hair, clubs and bare three-toed feet. Their loincloth colours distinguish the three gameplay roles: green for the sleeping relic thief, purple for the guard at their own cave and dark blue for the guard outside Oogle Boogle Cave. They share the prehistoric setting with the Oogle Boogles and the armour-wearing Rocknuts, but their encounters have different rules. Their hair hides their eyes, and their faces have no visible blinking animation. The guard outside Oogle Boogle Cave explains the tribe’s territorial position when Banjo asks why he considers its inhabitants bad people. The Unga Bungas want to rule the whole world, while the Oogle Boogles want to share it. His accusation therefore reflects the Unga Bungas’ ambitions, rather than any wrongdoing by the hungry cavemen inside. The blockade leaves the three Oogle Boogles cold and without food, creating the rescue that Banjo and Kazooie eventually undertake.

Reaching the Stolen Relic from Mayahem Temple

The sleeping Unga Bunga can be encountered well before the main entrance to Terrydactyland opens. In Mayahem Temple, shoot eggs into the six lizard mouths on the Treasure Chamber’s exterior to open its door, then speak to Chief Bloatazin inside. Targitzan’s Priceless Relic Thingy has been stolen, and the Chief opens the high exterior entrance to help the search. An interior route also works: Talon Trot up the gold mound on the left, jump to the wall ledge and Grip Grab along it. Continue through the alcove, use the Shock Spring Pad to reach the next ledge and follow the upper route to the switch that lowers the passage’s bars. Grip Grab is learned from Jamjars in Jade Snake Grove at 35 Notes. The passage beyond leads into the connected Unga Bunga cave rooms.

The Sleeping Guard and the Noisy Floor

The green-clothed Unga Bunga sleeps near the golden relic, with loose twigs spread over the red surface between the entrance and the prize. Running across this material wakes him. Before Banjo has taken the relic, the guard orders the intruder out; if Banjo is caught carrying it, he objects to the theft of the tribe’s stolen treasure and the attempt must be repeated. Move the analogue stick only slightly to tiptoe across the noisy section instead. Once safely over it, reach the relic’s ledge and pick it up. The raised tunnel behind the prize provides a route back around the edge of the room, avoiding a second noisy crossing while carrying it. This uses the duo’s existing quiet movement rather than a new technique taught by the caveman.

Returning the Relic and the Thief’s Reaction

Carry the recovered relic back through the Mayahem Temple connection and down to Chief Bloatazin in the Treasure Chamber. He receives his missing treasure and gives Banjo and Kazooie a Jiggy. A scene then returns to the sleeping Unga Bunga, who wakes to discover that the object he was guarding has disappeared. His confidence collapses into fear of the punishment he expects, and he runs away from his post. Taking the relic towards the tribe’s ordinary guarded entrance is a different matter: that doorkeeper notices what Banjo is carrying, demands it back and ejects him. The quiet upper return route therefore solves both the noisy-floor problem and the need to bring the item to the correct world.

The Purple Cave Doorkeeper

The purple-clothed Unga Bunga guards the tribe’s own entrance on Terrydactyland’s central mountain. Unlike the caveman blocking the Oogle Boogles, he considers Banjo and Kazooie acceptable visitors and allows their ordinary form through. Speaking again produces a brief introduction rather than a new challenge. He objects when they approach in Springy Step Shoes, refusing admission because of the footwear. Those shoes are useful for climbing the mountain, so the rule can interrupt an exploration route even though he is otherwise willing to admit the duo. Let the temporary footwear expire before trying to pass him again, and use the cave’s own routes and switches to continue through the mountain.

The Oogle Boogle Cave Guard

The dark-blue Unga Bunga holds the doorway to the Oogle Boogles’ cave near the train-station side of Terrydactyland. He blocks the normal duo and repeats his refusal when they insist. Visiting as Mumbo does not persuade him either. The Baby T-Rex can produce a roar after learning it from a Bargasaurus, but the guard laughs at that small dinosaur’s attempt and remains in place. His response establishes that changing into a T-Rex is not sufficient on its own: the size of the form matters. Clearing this doorway requires the Daddy T-Rex, whose roar makes the caveman abandon the post rather than begin a boss fight.

Using Mumbo and the Daddy T-Rex

Give a local Glowbo to Mumbo Jumbo in his skull and another to Humba Wumba at her wigwam. As Mumbo, reach the pad outside the wigwam and cast Enlarge to increase the tent’s size. Return Mumbo to his chair, then visit the enlarged wigwam as Banjo and Kazooie to obtain the Daddy T-Rex form. Walk around the central mountain to the Oogle Boogle guard and roar nearby. He cries out in fright, announces an urgent need to change his loincloth and flees. Return to Wumba to change back, then enter the newly accessible cave as the duo. The tribesmen inside still need their fires lit and food brought from Witchyworld; removing the guard opens that rescue rather than awarding its Jiggy immediately.

Cave Passages, Hatch and Terry’s Egg

The Unga Bunga caves contain passages and switches connecting the relic room with later routes through Terrydactyland’s mountain. From the relic chamber, jump to the side ledge and continue into the green-walled room with a beehive and Split Up pads. Kazooie can follow its corridor to Jamjars and learn Hatch at 420 Notes. Split Up itself is learned behind Witchyworld’s Big Top at 160 Notes. The cave system also contains one of Terry’s eggs, reached through an opening from the upper rooms and hatched by Kazooie alone. Because these rooms connect to Mayahem Temple, the lesson can be reached before opening Terrydactyland’s main 20-Jiggy entrance. That early access concerns the linked cave sections; the main outdoor world still has its own entrance requirement.

Gruntilda’s Questions and the Character Parade

The Tower of Tragedy Quiz asks what the Unga Bungas stole from Mayahem Temple, with the gold relic as the answer, and pairs them with the Oogle Boogles in a question about the rival caveman tribes. The later HAG 1 battle has a separate question asking how many Unga Bungas there are, answered with three. In the Character Parade, a tribesman is presented beside Chompasaurus under the name Lunch and is promptly eaten. The caveman model used for that gag can vary between parade viewings. Lunch is a cast-presentation joke, so that scene should not be counted as evidence of a fourth guard standing elsewhere in Terrydactyland.
