Burnie is the living furnace responsible for heating the Icymetric Palace in Glitterglaze Glacier. In Yooka-Laylee, he asks the heroes to investigate why his insides are frozen and he can no longer produce a flame. The cause is Brrreeze Blok, an ice-block intruder occupying his interior. Burnie is a large reddish-brown furnace with a broad door, protruding eyes and expressive metal eyebrows. His remarks about energy bills and a sensitive stomach give the repair task the form of a conversation with a character who is uncomfortable and needs help. After the intruder is defeated, Burnie can heat the palace again and its vents open further routes. He later returns in Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, where his smoke changes a chapter’s state, and in Yooka-Replaylee’s revised palace encounter.
Reaching Burnie in the Icymetric Palace
The original game places Burnie inside the upper part of the Icymetric Palace. Opening Glitterglaze Glacier costs three Pagies, and its five-Pagie expansion makes the palace entrances and their ice keys available. Enter through the upper doorway and follow the right-hand route through the falling-spike room. Use the moving platform to reach the higher exit and cross the wooden bridge towards the switch and timed hoop challenge. Completing the challenge reveals the Grenadberry needed to open the obstructed route. Beyond it, use water to put out the flames, take fire power from a Scorchberry and melt the ice around the next switch. Another water pickup lets the duo extinguish the burning platforms on the way to Burnie. These rooms require the projectile powers provided by Slurp Shot, learned earlier in Tribalstack Tropics. Burnie introduces himself as the palace’s heating caretaker and explains that his innards are frozen solid. When Yooka and Laylee offer to investigate, he opens the large door in his face so that they can enter. The conversation asks for help with his condition; attacking Burnie himself is not the means of restoring the heating.
Brrreeze Blok and Restoring the Heating
Inside the furnace, the duo meet Brrreeze Blok, who refuses to leave and attacks with icy projectiles. Burnie’s interior becomes the arena for this fight, while Burnie remains the character being helped. Scorchberries provide the heat needed to melt the intruder. Fire can be directed at the ice block itself, or used to light the torches in the alcoves along his path. The glass covering those alcoves can be broken with Sonar ’Splosion, the move taught in Moodymaze Marsh. Lighting the exposed torches damages the boss as he passes them, while direct fire provides another way to hurt him without treating the later sound attack as the only solution. Continue avoiding his shots and renew the fire power when needed. As Brrreeze Blok shrinks, he moves faster and changes the spread of his attacks, so there is less room to stand still and aim. Defeating him awards the original encounter’s Pagie and removes the source of the cold. The fight also earns the Knocking Down Walls achievement or trophy on versions that support it. The boss’s separate article covers the combat in more detail. Once Brrreeze Blok is gone, Burnie can produce heat again and the palace’s previously inactive vents begin working. The change affects exploration beyond the arena. In Burnie’s own room, a vent lifts Yooka and Laylee towards the Pagie overhead; jump towards the stream and use Laylee’s glide to take advantage of the rising air. Return through Burnie’s doorway for the post-boss passage containing rotating cylinders, where careful movement leads to another Pagie. Other working vents in the palace open routes towards further rooms and the Health Extender. These are separate exploration rewards made reachable by repairing the heating, so collecting the boss’s prize does not finish everything connected with Burnie.
Burnie in Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair
Burnie reappears in the overworld’s Final Zone in Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair. His role here is connected with the book for Chapter 19, Scareship Shootout. Complete the nearby Pagie challenge to expose the ledges needed for the upper route, then use the movable crates and wind streams to work northwards. In the higher room, position the container over the opening and use the switch to drop it down towards the furnace below. The obstruction makes Burnie cough out smoke, which reaches the chapter book and changes it to Scareship Shootout - Smoggy. Entering the altered book leads to the chapter’s alternate layout, with smoke-cloud platforms providing routes between the structures. This uses Burnie’s function as a furnace in an overworld state-change puzzle, rather than repeating the Icymetric Palace intruder fight. The chapter’s enemies, coins and imprisoned Beettalion member belong to the level reached through the book. Burnie supplies the environmental change that makes that version accessible; he does not become a playable transformation inside it.
Burnie in Yooka-Replaylee
Yooka-Replaylee brings Burnie back to the Icymetric Palace as the furnace who needs warming up. The world is already expanded and the heroes start with their moves, changing the prerequisites from the original adventure. Follow the palace route until Burnie opens his door and enter to confront the ice-block occupant. During the remake’s fight, avoid the projectiles until a Fire Plant becomes available, then take its power and breathe flames at the boss to damage and shrink him. Victory now awards three Pagies. Afterwards, ride the steam vent inside the boss room and continue through the newly available doorway. The rotating-pipe room has three Buddy Slam buttons that release a Pagie from its cage, giving the restored heating a further role in the revised dungeon. These rewards and switches belong to Yooka-Replaylee’s version of the route and should be distinguished from the original one-Pagie boss encounter and its rotating-cylinder passage. Burnie retains the same basic character role across both versions: the palace’s heating caretaker gives the duo access to the cause of his discomfort, and clearing it allows them to explore further.
