Croctus

Croctus are the five golden crocodiles who ask to be fed in Bubblegloop Swamp in Banjo-Kazooie. Each waits with its mouth opening and closing until Banjo and Kazooie fire a Blue Egg inside. Feeding one brings the next into view elsewhere in the swamp, beginning a trail from the entrance to the raised paths, mud huts and platforms behind the world’s larger inhabitants. Their gemstone eyes change colour from one individual to the next, while their increasingly quick jaws make the later shots harder to time. The first Croctus thanks the pair for its meal, and another asks for the same treatment. Feeding the complete group earns a Jiggy at the final location behind Tanktup.

Golden Crocodiles with Gemstone Eyes

The Croctus have shiny gold bodies, wide hinged jaws and jewel-like eyes. The five encountered in order have green, blue, red, cyan and violet-pink eyes. These colours provide a way to identify progress through the sequence even though their bodies share the same design. Their talking portrait remains the same when a different member speaks. The first Croctus is pleased with its egg and draws attention to its hungry companions, while the second speaks up to request a meal too. They appear one after another at fixed places around the swamp, with the current crocodile disappearing as the next is revealed.

Getting Ready to Feed Them

Bubblegloop Swamp is opened by completing its seven-piece picture in Gruntilda’s Lair. The Croctus task uses the ordinary Blue Egg shooting learned from Bottles in Mumbo’s Mountain, so bring at least five eggs for five successful feedings and a few extra for missed shots. Approach each Croctus as Banjo and Kazooie, line up with the mouth and use the crouched forward egg shot. First-person view can help check the direction before returning to the normal firing controls. The egg has to arrive while the jaw is open; a well-aimed shot can still fail if it reaches a closed mouth. Mumbo’s Crocodile transformation is used for other swamp tasks, while these hungry crocodiles are fed with Kazooie’s eggs.

The Green and Blue-Eyed Croctus

The first Croctus waits on the left of the world’s entrance platform. Its slow jaw cycle gives time to practise lining up an egg and watching it reach the mouth. After a successful feeding, the blue-eyed Croctus appears on the elevated, winding path in the central part of the swamp. Reach the nearby Jiggy switch area, then use Talon Trot to climb the slope onto the raised route. Follow its branches to the second crocodile and feed it another egg. The path is also used for a timed Jiggy race, but visiting the Croctus does not require completing that race at the same time. Stay clear of the narrow edges while finding a firing position.

The Red-Eyed Croctus by the High Huts

The third Croctus appears in the area of tall rock pillars and mud huts. Climb through the hut platforms, using the Shock Spring Pads revealed by breaking the huts with Beak Buster to gain height. Look towards the upper ledges for the red-eyed crocodile on a platform without a hut. The feeding position is reached through the same elevated area that holds the world’s high-rise hut challenge, so use the empty platform as the landmark rather than searching inside the huts. Once safely beside it, turn towards the mouth and watch the faster opening cycle before firing. A successful egg makes the fourth Croctus appear behind the giant crocodile-shaped building elsewhere in the swamp.

Behind the Crocodile Building and Tanktup

The cyan-eyed fourth Croctus stands on a platform behind the giant crocodile building that houses Mr. Vile. Use the reeds and nearby islands to reach the platform, or make use of Wading Boots for the stretches of piranha-filled water. Feed this crocodile, then head towards Tanktup and look at the small mud platforms behind him. One holds the final violet-pink-eyed Croctus, with a Buzzbomb nearby that is best dealt with before lining up a shot. Wading Boots on Tanktup’s shell help with the water crossing, while jumps between dry platforms keep Banjo out of danger. The fifth crocodile has the shortest opening, so take a stable position and judge the egg’s travel time carefully.

Timing the Last Egg and Collecting the Jiggy

Each successive Croctus opens and closes its jaw faster, leaving less time for an egg to enter. Watch a complete cycle before shooting and, for the quickest mouth, release the egg just before the expected opening so that it arrives at the right moment. Adjust distance or direction if shots repeatedly strike the outside instead of sending more along an incorrect line. A missed egg leaves the current feeding unfinished, giving another chance on the next opening. Once the fifth Croctus is fed, it disappears and a Jiggy appears at its position behind Tanktup. Collect the prize there to finish the chain. The group awards one Jiggy for feeding all five, with each earlier success revealing the next hungry crocodile.
