Moonie is a small living moon found on the waters of Galleon Galaxy in Yooka-Laylee and Yooka-Replaylee. He greets Yooka and Laylee while they are using the world’s Ship transformation and asks for help with an itch on his back. Their attempt to oblige destroys him, prompting his partner Planette to attack. Moonie’s body is a small, roughly rounded moon covered in deep craters, with a face at the front and an oversized, rounded rear that makes his request to be shot in the back a visual joke as well as a dialogue prompt. He wears a monocle and a red bow tie decorated with yellow planets. His greeting is relaxed and polite: he enjoys skimming the cosmic shore and considers it a pleasant evening for sailing. He treats the possibility of microbial life evolving on his surface as an irritating rash, even recalling another celestial body that endured a similar problem for millennia. Rather than regarding the duo’s weapons as a threat, he sees their large cannons as a practical way to reach the troublesome spot. He also dismisses their warning about making another crater, explaining that his girlfriend likes them. A red band runs around his body behind the face, and the cord of his monocle hangs beneath the lens. Yooka responds to his greeting by remarking on how low his orbit looks. In Yooka-Laylee, Moonie appears in the expanded version of Galleon Galaxy, among the floating rocks near the Black Hole in One area. Reaching the encounter by water requires the Ship transformation supplied by Dr. Puzz after she receives the world’s Mollycool. The switch at the top of the lighthouse first brings her to the dock below; the Mollycool itself is on the tower’s outer spire, reached with Flappy Flight.
Moonie’s Request and Planette
The transformed pair can sail across the hazardous sea and use their different weapons to clear the surrounding rocks: the fire attack melts blue icy obstacles, and explosive cannonballs destroy the orange ones. These rocks conceal the approach to Moonie rather than forming part of a fight against him. Once the route is open, drawing alongside him starts his conversation about the evening and the itch. He specifically asks for the cannon to be aimed at his back, so the requested shot is made from behind him after the exchange. If the duo delay, he urges them to get on with it. Firing at Moonie does not produce the harmless scratch he expects. The shot blows him apart, and Yooka and Laylee immediately argue about who was controlling the cannons. Planette’s cry follows the explosion: she recognises that her Moonie has been destroyed and turns her anger on the pair, calling them pirates and threatening to annihilate them. Planette’s introduction presents her as the Interstellar World Widow, although Moonie’s earlier conversation calls her his girlfriend. The duo remain in Ship form for the resulting fight, using its ice, fire and cannon attacks against her different surfaces. Defeating Planette awards one Pagie in Yooka-Laylee and unlocks the Planetary Annihilation achievement or trophy. Yooka-Replaylee retains Moonie’s conversation, the fatal shot and Planette’s retaliation, but names the associated boss objective Malicious Moon and increases the reward to three Pagies. In both versions, those rewards follow the battle rather than the shot at Moonie himself. His death is the reason Planette attacks, turning an attempted favour for a friendly stranger into a confrontation with his grieving partner.
