Rubee

Rubee banner placeholder

Rubee is a human snake charmer who lives inside a pyramid in Gobi’s Valley in Banjo-Kazooie. He sits cross-legged on a raised platform beside Histup’s basket, wearing an oversized yellow turban with a green jewel and striped brown trousers. His small pink pet, Toots, rests beside him while he waits for visitors. Rubee offers to help Banjo and Kazooie reach the treasure near the ceiling, but first asks for a donation of Blue Eggs into a moving bowl. Once the payment is complete, he plays his pipe and brings Histup out of the central basket. The snake’s extended body then provides the route to the Jiggy above. Rubee’s challenge combines an aerial entrance puzzle, carefully timed egg laying and a climb, with his music linking the final two parts of the encounter. Histup and Toots are separate creatures: the snake supplies the climbing route, while the smaller pet remains beside the charmer and later appears in Banjo-Tooie.

Reaching Rubee’s Pyramid

The entrance is beneath the large Kazooie-shaped target suspended above one of Gobi’s Valley’s pyramids. Learn Beak Bomb from Bottles at the stacked presents in Freezeezy Peak, then return to the desert and use the Flight Pad on Jinxy’s back. Aim at the centre of the target and strike it with Beak Bomb to open the door below. The entrance remains available for 21 seconds, so descend and enter before the timer ends. The move learned from Bottles in Gobi’s Valley is Turbo Talon Trot; that ability serves other challenges and does not replace Beak Bomb for this target. If the door closes, take off and strike the target again. Inside, the sandy exterior gives way to a chamber with a green central platform, a wicker snake basket, the circling donation bowl and the charmer at the far side.

Meeting the Snake Charmer

Approaching the raised platform brings the duo into conversation with Rubee. He greets them as friends and asks whether he can help, after which Kazooie explains that they are looking for treasure. Rubee draws attention to the gold high above them and allows them to take it if they can reach it. His proposed assistance is practical: the snake in the basket can bridge the height between the floor and the ceiling. A smaller bowl travels in a circle around that basket, providing the place for the requested donation. Rubee stays seated while the player attempts the task, with Toots still at his side. The conversation establishes an exchange of assistance rather than a fight or a contest against the charmer, and the reward is already visible as a destination within the room.

The Five-Egg Donation

Deposit five Blue Eggs into the small revolving bowl. The normal approach is to stand just outside its circular path, face away from it and use Kazooie’s rear egg-laying action as the bowl passes behind the duo. On Nintendo 64, crouch with Z and press C Down to lay an egg. Watch the bowl’s position rather than releasing the whole supply at once, because every successful donation makes it travel faster. Later eggs therefore need different timing from the first. The larger stationary basket in the centre houses Histup and is not the moving donation target. Missed eggs that remain on the floor can be picked up again, allowing another attempt without immediately leaving for a refill. Continue until all five have landed; Rubee’s thanks and the start of his performance indicate that the payment has been accepted.

Histup and the Jiggy Above

After the donation, Rubee plays his pipe and Histup rises from the wicker basket. The snake extends almost to the chamber’s ceiling, carrying the basket lid upward and turning his body into a climbable route. Banjo and Kazooie can get onto the lid before it rises or jump onto Histup’s extended neck and climb from below. Missing the initial lift does not remove the opportunity to reach the reward. At the top, move onto Histup’s head and use a Flap Flip to collect the Jiggy overhead. The treasure is obtained through this climb, rather than being handed directly to the duo by Rubee. The room also contains a Mumbo Token near the charmer and eight Musical Notes around its edges, so its floor and side alcoves are worth checking before leaving. Those collectibles are separate from the five eggs used for the performance.

Toots and Banjo-Tooie

Toots is the small creature sitting beside Rubee, distinct from the much larger Histup. Rare’s December 1998 Scribes response identified the pet by name but deliberately left its species and gender undefined, so its unusual shape should not be treated as proof that it is a Jinjo or a particular real animal. Toots returns in Banjo-Tooie as King Jingaling’s pet in his throne room. The king’s encounter with B.O.B. also affects Toots, leaving the creature reduced to a small pile with visible eyes until the story’s restoration. Rubee does not accompany this appearance, and the games do not explain how Toots came to live with the king. The pet therefore supplies a connection between Rubee’s chamber and the sequel without establishing another physical appearance or quest for the charmer himself.

Voice and Other References

Rubee’s dialogue uses a distinctive rapid, rhythmic mumble, while his pipe-playing accompanies Histup’s ascent. Grant Kirkhope has attributed the charmer’s speech to Rare artist Lee Ray, who also voiced Bottles. Rubee’s recognizable voice is used as a sound-identification subject in Grunty’s Furnace Fun, so the encounter can remain relevant after the Gobi’s Valley Jiggy has been collected. The quiz connection concerns recognizing the speaker, rather than repeating the egg donation. Rubee’s desert location and the tune he plays also distinguish him from the game’s other musical character, Motzand, whose organ challenge takes place in Mad Monster Mansion. Both encounters lead to a Jiggy, but Rubee asks for eggs and provides a climb through Histup rather than requiring the duo to copy a sequence of notes.
