Salty Joe runs the fries stand in Witchyworld in Banjo-Tooie. The red-furred vendor dislikes customers and responds irritably even when the park’s queue is empty, making his conversations with Kazooie a contest in sarcasm. Opening his stall gives the duo access to free fries needed by Soggy and the hungry Oogle Boogles in Terrydactyland. Joe also has an extended conversation reserved for Banjo visiting alone, in which he tries to become the bear’s replacement sidekick. His food stand complements Big Al’s burger stall on the ring path around the Big Top. Beyond the main encounter, Rare discussed his rejected partnership and the choice of the word fries in Scribes, and his name is used beside a designer in the Nuts & Bolts credits.
Appearance and Animal Identity
Salty Joe has red-orange fur, a long pointed muzzle, green eyes and a slimmer build than Big Al. He wears blue trousers with a stained red-and-white striped apron and matching food-service hat. His badge displays four stars, considerably better than Al’s single star despite the equally unappealing menu. Joe is commonly described as a red fox in community references, while a Banjo designer explicitly called him a weasel in Rare’s Scribes column of 12 February 2001. During the character parade, he is also shown sneezing over the fries, continuing the food-hygiene joke associated with Witchyworld’s stalls.
Opening the Fries Stand
Joe’s stand is on the path surrounding the Big Top, between the park’s Western and Horror areas. Witchyworld itself becomes available after collecting eight Jiggies and completing Jiggywiggy’s corresponding challenge. The stall starts closed, but the Fry Switch is directly behind it and can be pressed without climbing another building. Finding it makes Joe complain that someone has discovered the switch, since customers inevitably want things from him. Approach the counter once the stand has opened to hear his greeting. Unlike Big Al’s opening switch, which is on the ticket-booth roof near the park entrance, Joe’s switch belongs to the stand’s immediate surroundings. Raising the stall does not require paying for a ride, using the Van or restoring one of the attractions with Mumbo’s magic.
Serving Customers and Running Out of Fries
Joe tells the visitors to hurry their order because he is busy, giving Kazooie an easy opportunity to mock the complete absence of other customers. He answers the bird’s sarcasm before offering the limp, salty fries advertised at his counter. The information sign nearby similarly describes a greasy, flavourless substitute for a proper meal. Asking for food supplies five portions without payment. Joe reluctantly wishes the customers a nice day, then says he must start frying more because his current stock has run out. Kazooie jokes about the approaching rush, provoking another irritated response. Leaving the world and returning lets the vendor prepare more, so a missed or confiscated batch does not permanently prevent the food quests. He serves the duo and solo Banjo, but refuses solo Kazooie, Mumbo and the Van transformation.
Banjo Alone and the Sidekick Offer
A different conversation becomes available when Banjo visits without Kazooie. Learn Split Up from Jamjars behind the Big Top at 160 Musical Notes, separate at the pads and approach the counter as the bear. Banjo points out that he appears to be the only person in the queue, rather than letting Kazooie make her usual joke about the crowd. When Joe delivers his reluctant farewell, Banjo asks whether he is paid to say it, and the vendor admits that he is. Hearing that the bear is returning to an exciting adventure, Joe asks to come along as a sidekick. He advertises three supposed talents: the Salt Shaker Slap, the Greasy Hand Grab and the ability to spit fries a considerable distance. Banjo declines and leaves him at the stand. The exchange supplies extra dialogue rather than recruiting Joe or teaching any of those moves.
Fries for Soggy
Salty Joe’s fries persuade Soggy to return to Mrs. Boggy near the park entrance. The cubs’ positions vary between save files, so locate the girl in the pink dress and speak to her with food available. She asks for fries, accepts the donation and makes her own way back to her mother. Her brother Groggy instead wants Big Al’s burger and then needs Banjo’s Taxi Pack to carry him, while Moggy must be persuaded by an attack. Mrs. Boggy awards the family’s single Jiggy once all three are back. If a hungry child is inside Witchyworld’s train station, walking through its normal entrance confiscates the food. The special approach takes the supplies into Terrydactyland through Oogle Boogle Cave and returns aboard Chuffy; the railway and station-door requirements are covered in Big Al’s food-transport account.
Preparing the Cavemen’s Meal
The fries also contribute to feeding the three Oogle Boogles in Terrydactyland. First open their guarded cave by giving the local Glowbos to Mumbo and Humba Wumba, having Mumbo Enlarge Wumba’s Wigwam and transforming into the Daddy T-Rex inside the larger tent. Its roar frightens away the Unga Bunga guard. Return as the duo and warm all three cavemen by lighting their fires with Fire Eggs, learned on the Plateau at 45 Notes. One tribesman is reached by drilling the boulder near the cave entrance, using the revealed Shock Spring Pad and following the wall with Grip Grab. Bill Drill is learned in Glitter Gulch Mine at 85 Notes, and Grip Grab in Mayahem Temple at 35. The switch in the passage behind the central tribesman opens the connection to Witchyworld’s Area 51. With the cave prepared, the remaining job is to bring food through that high passage.
Carrying Fries Out of Witchyworld
Ordinary exits remove the food in the player’s inventory, so the cavemen’s supplies must use the raised Area 51 route. Collect food from Joe and Big Al, then Talon Trot up a guy rope to the roof of the Big Top. The Claw Clamber Boots there let the duo follow the footprints up Area 51’s wall once Jamjars has taught the move on Grunty Industries Floor 1 at 505 Notes. If the electric gate into Area 51 remains closed, destroy it with a Grenade Egg, learned in Pine Grove at 110 Notes. Climb to the open cave passage and take the meal back into Terrydactyland. Give food to each of the three warmed Oogle Boogles to complete their request and receive the shared Jiggy.
Fries, Chips and Rare’s Scribes
Rare returned to Joe’s sidekick conversation in Scribes on 12 February 2001. A reader proposed a Banjo-Salty Joe game after being disappointed that Banjo had rejected the vendor, particularly admiring the possible usefulness of his greasy-handed attack. The designer’s reply joked about the drawbacks of controlling an irritable, sweaty animal smelling of fried potatoes. It also explained a wording choice visible on the stand: the British developers would call the food chips, but used fries because they expected complaints or confusion over the British term. This is a contemporary comment about the character’s dialogue and presentation, rather than confirmation that a separate game entered development. It gives additional context to both Joe’s proposed partnership and the menu terminology used throughout his encounter.
The Nuts & Bolts Credits and Later Releases
The closing credits of Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts list designer Steve Malpass with the label Salty Joe under the Daft Ideas and Vehicle Gluing heading. The credits use character and vehicle-themed labels for many staff members, making this a later reference to the name rather than another scene at the fries counter. His established food-service encounter remains in Banjo-Tooie on Nintendo 64, the Xbox release available through Rare Replay and the Nintendo 64 presentation on Nintendo Switch Online. Those releases retain the stand-opening switch, food quests and conversation with Banjo alone, with control prompts depending on the version being played.
