Big Al

Big Al banner placeholder

Big Al is the rhinoceros who runs the burger stand in Witchyworld in Banjo-Tooie. His stall provides free burgers once Banjo and Kazooie find the switch that opens it, although watching him prepare the food gives them little confidence in its quality. He drops burgers, coughs over them and admits that his previous job involved cleaning toilets. The food nevertheless serves an important purpose: Groggy wants a burger before returning to Mrs. Boggy, and the hungry Oogle Boogles in Terrydactyland also need supplies from the park. Big Al works alongside Salty Joe, the fries vendor on another side of the Big Top. His name is mentioned again in Hailfire Peaks and survives as a background reference in Nuts & Bolts.

Appearance and Food Hygiene

Big Al is a heavyset grey rhinoceros with a large horn, a backwards red cap and red trousers. His red-and-white striped apron is marked with food stains, and the badge on his chest displays one star out of four. Green mucus hangs from his nose, which he wipes with his bare hand while working. The burger-shaped stall provides a counter and grill for his food preparation, including an animation in which a burger reaches the ground before he considers putting it back on the grill. His coughing and sneezing continue the joke about the stall’s cleanliness. The nearby information sign also supplies an unappealing recipe: the meat comes from rodents and is accompanied by an artificial cheese slice. These details establish the poor standard of the burgers before the player asks for any.

Opening the Burger Stand

Witchyworld opens after the player has collected eight Jiggies and completed the corresponding Jiggywiggy challenge. Big Al’s stall stands on the circular route around the Big Top, on the side between the park entrance and the Space Zone, but it begins closed. Return to the ticket booth near Mrs. Boggy at the entrance and use the Shock Spring Pad behind it to reach the roof. Step on the Burger Switch there to raise the stand and reveal its owner. The opening scene catches Al with a dropped burger, interrupting his assumption that the customers will never know what happened. Once the stall is available, approach its counter to begin the conversation. This roof switch is separate from the one directly behind Salty Joe’s stand, which opens the fries stall instead.

Ordering Burgers and Getting More

Al advertises his burgers enthusiastically, prompting Kazooie to ask how he ever obtained a catering job. He is unsure himself and explains that he previously cleaned the toilets, which abruptly removes Banjo’s appetite. Continuing the conversation allows the duo to request food anyway, and Al hands over a batch of five burgers without charging Notes or asking for payment from the Van. He offers fries with the order, then immediately admits that he only has burgers and directs them to Salty Joe. After serving the batch, Al says he has run out and will have to search for more. Banjo points out a possible burger beneath his left foot, but Al claims he cannot see it. Leaving Witchyworld and returning allows the stall to supply another batch, so his exhausted-stock dialogue does not mean the food is permanently unavailable.

Who Big Al Will Serve

Banjo can obtain burgers with Kazooie in the backpack or while visiting the counter alone. The latter becomes possible after learning Split Up from Jamjars behind the Big Top at 160 Musical Notes. Other forms receive a refusal: solo Kazooie, Mumbo and Humba Wumba’s Van transformation are told that Al is not allowed to serve their kind. The Van’s ability to pay for certain park attractions therefore does not make it the correct form for collecting burgers. Return to the ordinary duo or to Banjo himself before trying the counter again. These restrictions govern the vendor interaction, while the food already obtained is used in conversations with its intended recipients. The burger stand does not need Mumbo’s attraction-powering spell once its own opening switch has been pressed.

Groggy’s Burger and the Taxi Pack

One burger is needed by Groggy, the largest of Mrs. Boggy’s three children. His position varies between save files, so find the cub and speak to him rather than assuming he always waits in one particular park area. Giving him the food satisfies his request, but he becomes too full to walk back to his mother. Banjo must learn Taxi Pack from Jamjars in Terrydactyland’s River Passage at 405 Notes, split from Kazooie and carry Groggy to Mrs. Boggy near Witchyworld’s entrance. On Nintendo 64, hold Z and press C-Left to ready the backpack, then B to scoop up the cub; use the pack again to put him down beside his mother. The family’s Jiggy is awarded after all three cubs have returned: Soggy needs Salty Joe’s fries, while Moggy must be persuaded with an attack. Big Al supplies one necessary item rather than giving out that Jiggy himself. Later, in the family’s Hailfire Peaks igloo, Groggy remembers the burger and thanks Banjo for it.

Food Confiscation and the Train Station

Witchyworld’s management confiscates food carried through its ordinary exits, including the normal route into the train station. The exception is the high passage above Area 51 leading directly into Oogle Boogle Cave. This matters both for the cavemen’s meal and for a hungry cub positioned inside the station. In that case, take the food through the cave into Terrydactyland and use Chuffy to arrive at Witchyworld’s station from the railway side. The train must already have been restored by Mumbo in Glitter Gulch Mine, with Old King Coal defeated and the relevant station doors opened. Terrydactyland’s Train Switch is opposite Wumba’s Wigwam; Witchyworld’s is reached from the coffins and wall ledge inside its station. The railway preparation is also described in Scrut’s rescue. The raised Area 51 passage must be available before attempting this food-delivery route.

Preparing Oogle Boogle Cave

The other major use for Big Al’s food is the meal for three Oogle Boogles in Terrydactyland. Their cave is guarded by an Unga Bunga who can be frightened away by the Daddy T-Rex. Give the local Glowbos to Mumbo and Humba Wumba, use Mumbo’s Enlarge spell on Wumba’s Wigwam and enter the enlarged tent as the duo to obtain the large T-Rex form. Roar at the guard, then return to the normal bear and bird to enter the cave. Light the three cavemen’s fires with Fire Eggs, learned from Jamjars on the Plateau at 45 Notes. Reaching the elevated caveman also involves Bill Drill on a boulder, the revealed Shock Spring Pad and Grip Grab along the wall; those moves are learned at 85 Notes in Glitter Gulch Mine and 35 Notes in Mayahem Temple respectively. Press the switch in the passage behind the central caveman to open the connection to Area 51.

Taking the Meal Out Through Area 51

Stock up at both food stands, then climb a guy rope of the Big Top using Talon Trot to reach its roof. Collect the Claw Clamber Boots there and take them to the marked wall in Area 51. Jamjars teaches the boots on Floor 1 of Grunty Industries at 505 Notes, so this delivery normally waits until that later world. If Area 51’s entrance gate is still closed, open it with a Grenade Egg; the ammunition is learned in Pine Grove at 110 Notes. Follow the footprints up the wall to the raised passage and return to Oogle Boogle Cave without losing the food to management. Offer food to all three cavemen after their fires have been lit to receive the shared Jiggy. Supplying the burgers and fries is part of that reward’s progression; merely reaching the cave with a full inventory does not finish their request.

Quiz Questions and Chilli Billi’s Appetite

Gruntilda’s Tower of Tragedy quiz can ask who sells burgers in Witchyworld, with Big Al as the answer instead of Little Willy or Medium Moe. Another question asks where the burger-stand switch is located: on top of the ticket booth. Behind the fries stand is an incorrect alternative for that question, even though it is the correct location of Salty Joe’s own switch. Al’s food also receives a reference outside the park when Chilli Billi is defeated in Hailfire Peaks. The dragon announces an intention to get some of Big Al’s burgers after the fight. This extends the vendor’s reputation beyond the customers the player feeds directly, without creating another meal-delivery objective or a second burger stand in the mountain world.

Nuts & Bolts Reference and Later Releases

A box bearing Big Al’s name appears in Banjoland in Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, preserving a reference to the earlier game’s food vendor among the world’s nostalgic exhibits and background objects. This is a named environmental reference rather than another burger-ordering quest like the one in Witchyworld. His full vendor encounter remains part of Banjo-Tooie on Nintendo 64, the Xbox release available through Rare Replay and the Nintendo 64 presentation on Nintendo Switch Online. The stall switch, five-burger serving, customers and food-export puzzle belong to the same adventure across those releases.
