Scrut is a pink Styracosaurus and Scrotty’s daughter in Banjo-Tooie. She leaves her family in Terrydactyland to visit Witchyworld, but the trip ends with her locked in the Cave of Horrors as its supposed Mighty Evil Dinosaur. Banjo and Kazooie can open the cage, although getting her home also requires bringing Chuffy to the theme park and travelling to Terrydactyland. Her rescue is one of the three jobs Scrotty needs finished before she hands over a Jiggy. The other children are Scrat, who is ill, and Scrit, who has become unusually small. Scrut can be encountered during the duo’s first visit to Witchyworld, before they have opened her home world or met the rest of the family.
Appearance and Family
Scrut has pink skin, a broad head with a pointed nose horn and a spiked frill, a pale underside and a stocky body supported by four short legs. Her large eyes and long eyelashes are visible both in her dialogue portrait and on the model used during the rescue. She is considerably smaller than Scrotty, but her pink colouring makes her easy to distinguish from her brothers: Scrat is yellow and Scrit is blue. The same dinosaur model moves from the cage to the train and eventually back into the family cave. The fearsome description attached to her cell is part of Witchyworld’s exhibit, while her actual behaviour is that of a stranded visitor asking to leave.
The Trip to Witchyworld
Scrotty’s account of the disappearance begins with Scrut taking money from her purse and heading for the train station. Scrut supplies the other half of the story when the duo find her: she came by train to enjoy the theme park, then its rat captors locked her in a cage and turned her into an exhibit. This explains why a dinosaur native to Terrydactyland is first available to meet in another world. Her sign describes her as mighty and evil, but she points out that a creature worthy of that description would already have broken the door down. The reply undercuts Banjo and Kazooie’s initial impression of the prisoner. It also makes the difference between the attraction’s claims and the captive’s actual predicament explicit, before the player begins arranging her escape.
Finding Her Cell in the Cave of Horrors
Enter Witchyworld’s Horror Zone and pass through The Haunted Cavern to reach the Cave of Horrors. Scrut occupies the central one of three barred exhibits. Her Mighty Evil Dinosaur sign distinguishes that cell from Gobi as the Ancient Bearded Camel and the Jinjo displayed as a Weird Killer Alien. Opening the park itself requires eight Jiggies and Jiggywiggy’s third picture challenge in Wooded Hollow. To free Scrut, shoot a Grenade Egg at the lock on her cell. Jamjars teaches this ammunition in Pine Grove outside Witchyworld once the total reaches 110 Musical Notes. Ordinary conversation does not open the bars, and the prisoners in the neighbouring cells have their own outcomes when freed. Scrut’s part of Scrotty’s quest depends on releasing this dinosaur and arranging transport, rather than completing the whole collection of exhibits.
Restoring Chuffy and Opening Witchyworld’s Station
Chuffy must be working before Scrut can use the railway. In Glitter Gulch Mine, give Mumbo the local Glowbo and use the Train Station’s Levitate pad to put the locomotive back on its wheels. Return as the duo and defeat Old King Coal inside the boiler to gain permission to ride. Witchyworld’s station is reached through the greenish doorway in the Horror Zone. Inside, jump onto the brown coffin leaning against the left wall, then reach the ledge and Grip Grab along the crack to the alcove containing the Train Switch. Grip Grab is learned from Jamjars in Mayahem Temple’s Jade Snake Grove at 35 Notes. Press the switch to open the railway doors, then use the station sign to call Chuffy. Opening the doors and actually bringing the train to the platform are separate steps.
Scrut’s Different Reactions to the Train
The order in which the cage and train are dealt with changes Scrut’s response. If her lock is destroyed while Chuffy is elsewhere, she thanks the visitors but refuses to leave until the train is in Witchyworld’s station. Once the locomotive arrives, she hears it and announces that it is time to go. If Chuffy is already waiting when the cage opens, she can instead immediately thank her rescuers and set off for the next train out. In either case, she makes her own way aboard the wagon. Banjo does not need Taxi Pack to carry her from the cell, which is a useful distinction from the transport required by her sick brother. Speaking to her while she is on the train produces a request for a one-way ticket to Terrydactyland.
The Journey Back to Terrydactyland
Terrydactyland becomes available after collecting 20 Jiggies and completing its picture challenge at Jiggywiggy’s Temple. Before taking Scrut there, open the destination station by pressing the Train Switch on the raised ledge opposite Wumba’s Wigwam, below Dippy’s pool. Return to Chuffy with Scrut aboard, enter the locomotive’s cab and stand on the green GO pad to select Terrydactyland. The cab operates the journey, while Scrut travels in the attached wagon. On arrival, she leaves the train automatically and runs towards the Styracosaurus Family Cave. Her exit dialogue reveals that she is worried about how angry her mother will be. Follow her home to see the family reunion rather than expecting a reward to appear in the Witchyworld cell. Terrydactyland is where the rescued child’s return contributes to Scrotty’s Jiggy task.
Scrotty’s Punishment and Scrut’s Next Idea
Scrotty thanks Banjo and Kazooie for bringing back her missing child, but Scrut does not escape the consequences of the trip. Her mother assigns her a month of cleaning out the family cave as punishment. Scrut’s later conversation is still about the amusement park: she notes that her mother’s purse is empty but says she would like another visit to Witchyworld. This follows the earlier explanation that she took money from that purse before leaving. The comment leaves her enthusiasm for the park intact despite being captured there and reprimanded at home. It does not start a second journey that the player must arrange. After the rescue, Scrut remains part of the reunited family, with the cage-and-train event already counted towards their shared reward.
The Jiggy Shared by the Three Children
Scrut’s return resolves the missing-child part of Scrotty’s request, but the reward also depends on helping both brothers. Scrit needs Mumbo’s Enlarge spell at the pad inside the family cave after Bill Drill exposes it. Scrat needs Banjo’s Taxi Pack to reach Chuffy’s wagon, a train journey to the Cliff Top, Mumbo’s Heal spell and a return to Terrydactyland. The player can finish these jobs in different orders. Once all three are complete, Scrotty gives Banjo and Kazooie a Jiggy acquired from stepping on an Unga Bunga. Kazooie tries to obtain an extra one for their considerable effort, but Scrotty says no. Releasing Scrut’s cell therefore does not add a separate Witchyworld Jiggy: her homecoming forms one part of the single family reward in Terrydactyland.
Quiz Reference and Game Versions
A Tower of Tragedy question asks what type of dinosaur Terrydactyland’s mother and three children are. The answer is Styracosaurus, covering Scrut as well as Scrotty and her two sons. Her Mighty Evil Dinosaur sign is also a useful landmark for identifying the correct prisoner among the Cave of Horrors’ three exhibits. Scrut’s rescue appears in the original Nintendo 64 Banjo-Tooie and is retained in the Xbox release available through Rare Replay, as well as the Nintendo 64 version on Nintendo Switch Online. The prisoner, station switches, boarding conditions and destination describe the same quest in those versions, with inputs depending on the controller and mapping being used.
