Scrat is a yellow Styracosaurus and the eldest of Scrotty’s three children in Banjo-Tooie. He lives in the Styracosaurus Family Cave in Terrydactyland, where an illness has left him too weak to travel to a doctor by himself. His mother asks Banjo and Kazooie to help him, alongside the separate problems affecting his brother Scrit and sister Scrut. Scrat’s treatment takes place outside his home world: Banjo must carry him onto Chuffy, take him to the Cliff Top in Isle o’ Hags and arrange for Mumbo Jumbo to heal him. The journey is only finished when the train brings him back to Terrydactyland. Once healthy, Scrat becomes much more lively and begins making hungry remarks about the very pair who helped him.
Appearance and the Styracosaurus Family
Scrat has yellow skin, a broad snout, a prominent nose horn and a spiked frill behind his head. He stands on four legs and has a pale underside, with the heavy head and short, stocky body shared by his family. His colour distinguishes him from his much smaller brother Scrit and pink sister Scrut. In the family cave, his resting posture makes his condition apparent before the journey begins. His dialogue portrait and the model placed in the world are not identical, and the model has noticeable eyelashes; those details should not be used to identify him as Scrut. Scrotty explicitly introduces Scrat as her eldest and refers to him as her son. Some older guides use feminine pronouns for the sick dinosaur, but that conflicts with the introduction in the game.
Finding Scrat in Terrydactyland
The Styracosaurus Family Cave is reached from the lower part of Terrydactyland, by following the steep ramp to the right of the World Entry and Exit. The world itself opens after collecting 20 Jiggies and completing Jiggywiggy’s corresponding picture challenge. Inside the cave, Scrotty explains that each of her children needs a different kind of help. Scrat is present but sick, Scrit has become unusually small and Scrut is missing. Scrotty’s request for a doctor prompts Kazooie to ask which doctor, setting up a joke about the witch doctor who can actually solve the problem. There are Split-Up Pads in the cave for the later carrying task. The boulder hiding a Mumbo Pad is associated with Scrit’s size problem; uncovering that pad does not provide the treatment Scrat needs.
Illness and Appetite
Before treatment, Scrat speaks wearily and considers what he has eaten as a possible reason for feeling ill. His suggestions include a caveman and pterodactyl dung, but the conversation does not establish a definite cause or diagnosis. This gives his illness a deliberately unpleasant food joke rather than an explanation the player must investigate. Scrotty is concerned with getting him to a doctor, while Scrat himself is unable to make the trip on foot. His later dialogue follows the same appetite theme: recovery makes him keen to eat again, including requests to gnaw Banjo’s leg or chew Kazooie. Those remarks are part of his conversation and do not turn him into an enemy encounter. The practical change is that a cured Scrat can leave the train and run home under his own strength.
Learning the Moves for the Journey
Banjo needs Split-Up and Taxi Pack before he can move Scrat. Jamjars teaches Split-Up behind Witchyworld’s Big Top when the total reaches 160 Musical Notes. Taxi Pack is learned by Banjo alone in Terrydactyland’s River Passage at 405 Notes. In that passage, use the low crack above the water to reach the alcove with Split-Up Pads, separate and continue along the cracks as Banjo to the teaching hatch. Taxi Pack lets him remove his backpack, scoop up a passenger and carry it while Kazooie remains elsewhere. On Nintendo 64, hold Z and press left C to take out the pack, then press B beside the passenger to pick them up. These abilities solve the first part of Scrat’s problem, but Mumbo and a working train are still needed for the treatment.
Preparing Chuffy and the Stations
Chuffy must first be restored in Glitter Gulch Mine. Give the local Glowbo to Mumbo and use the Levitate pad in the Train Station to set the derailed locomotive upright. Return as Banjo and Kazooie, enter the boiler and defeat Old King Coal to gain permission to travel. Scrat’s route then requires the stations in Terrydactyland and Isle o’ Hags to be open. Terrydactyland’s Train Switch is on the raised platform opposite Wumba’s Wigwam, beneath the area of Dippy’s pool. The Cliff Top switch is on a ledge near its station, reached with Grip Grab. Pressing these switches opens the railway doors; it does not automatically bring Chuffy to the platform. At an open station, use the train sign to call the locomotive if it is parked elsewhere.
Carrying Scrat into the Wagon
Return to the family cave, separate Banjo from Kazooie and use Taxi Pack beside Scrat to put him in the backpack. Carry him out to Terrydactyland’s Train Station and make sure Chuffy is present. The passenger must be placed in the wagon at the back of the train, rather than left in Banjo’s pack or taken into the locomotive’s control cab. Enter the wagon and use the pack control again to unload him. Scrat remains aboard and can comment on whether the train is taking him to a doctor. Reunite Banjo with Kazooie, then enter the cab and stand on the green GO pad. Choose Isle o’ Hags as the destination to bring both the train and its passenger to the Cliff Top. The separate wagon and cab entrances matter because one holds the patient while the other controls the journey.
Mumbo’s Heal Spell at the Cliff Top
With Scrat aboard Chuffy at the Cliff Top, leave the train and visit the nearby Mumbo’s Skull. If this Mumbo has not yet been activated, collect the local Glowbo from above the entrance building for Hailfire Peaks and bring it to him. Take control of Mumbo and walk down to the pad overlooking the parked train. His spell here is Heal: Sick Styracosaurus, and its magic reaches Scrat inside the wagon. Scrat does not need to be carried into the skull or placed directly on the pad. This is why visiting Mumbo in Terrydactyland does not finish the rescue: the useful spell belongs to the Cliff Top pad, whereas the dinosaur world’s family pad enlarges Scrit. After the healing sequence, return Mumbo to his chair and resume control of Banjo and Kazooie.
Returning Home and Receiving the Family Reward
Board Chuffy again and select Terrydactyland. On arrival, the recovered Scrat announces that he feels healthy and leaves the train to run back to the family cave. Banjo does not need to collect him in Taxi Pack for a second carrying trip. Healing him at the Cliff Top alone is therefore an intermediate stage, with the homeward train journey completing his part of the family quest. Scrotty’s Jiggy is awarded for helping all three children: Scrat must be treated and returned, Scrit must be enlarged with Terrydactyland’s Mumbo Pad, and Scrut must be freed from Witchyworld’s Cave of Horrors and brought home by train. If the other two jobs are already finished, Scrat’s return supplies the final condition for that reward. It is one family Jiggy rather than a separate Jiggy for each child.
Banjo-Tooie Versions and Character Connections
Scrat’s rescue is part of the original Nintendo 64 Banjo-Tooie and remains in the Xbox release, including its Rare Replay presentation, and the Nintendo 64 version available through Nintendo Switch Online. The Note thresholds, train destinations, wagon loading, Cliff Top treatment and return journey describe the same quest across those releases, although controller buttons depend on the version and control mapping. His relationship with Scrotty, Scrit and Scrut ties the rescue to both Terrydactyland and Witchyworld, while Chuffy and Mumbo provide the connection to Isle o’ Hags. Scrat’s renewed appetite is the character’s conversational follow-up to being healed.
