Glowbos are small pink magical creatures introduced in Banjo-Tooie. Their large pointed ears and prominent eyes make them recognisable even when they are partly hidden behind scenery, and they move around a small area until Banjo and Kazooie catch them by touching them. They replace the Mumbo Tokens used to buy transformation magic in the first adventure, but the new payment system serves two different shamans. Giving one ordinary Glowbo to Mumbo Jumbo allows the player to take control of him from his chair and use the local Mumbo Pads. Giving one to Humba Wumba activates her magic pool, which transforms Banjo and Kazooie when they jump into it. The fee unlocks that particular service once; returning to a paid hut, changing back or using another of Mumbo’s pads does not require another creature. There are seventeen ordinary Glowbos: two in each of the eight main worlds and one on the Isle o’ Hags. These cover eight ordinary transformation services and nine Mumbo locations. The separate Mega-Glowbo brings the overall collection to eighteen. Ordinary Glowbos enter a shared unspent supply, so one found in a different world can pay for a service that has not yet been unlocked. A world’s collection total records what has been found there, while the available stock falls when a shaman accepts payment. Seeing a collected Glowbo in the totals therefore does not mean it is still available to hand over. Humba’s ordinary forms are the Stony in Mayahem Temple, Detonator in Glitter Gulch Mine, Money Van in Witchyworld, Submarine in Jolly Roger’s Lagoon, T-Rex in Terrydactyland, Washer in Grunty Industries, Snowball in Hailfire Peaks and Bee in Cloud Cuckooland. Mumbo instead provides spells such as bringing the Golden Goliath to life, making the lagoon’s water breathable and healing the sick Styracosaurus brought to the Isle o’ Hags by train. Catching a Glowbo consequently opens another way to explore or solve a task; the creature itself does not directly award a Jiggy.
Finding the Ordinary Glowbos
Most ordinary Glowbos are placed near the magic they help unlock, although reaching them can require a swim, a climb or a later ability. In Mayahem Temple, one hops around the green-lit ground floor of Mumbo’s Skull, while the other waits behind Humba’s wigwam in Jade Snake Grove. Glitter Gulch Mine places one on the purple jewel mound near the entrance and the other in Mine Entry 2, beside the route near Mumbo’s Skull and its blocking rock. Witchyworld has a particularly convenient Glowbo inside Humba’s own wigwam; its second is in the Inferno near Mumbo’s Skull, reached after the Money Van has paid for entry. Jolly Roger’s Lagoon separates its pair between a high shelf in Pawno’s shop, beside the Gruntilda doll, and an underwater recess beneath the rock supporting Humba’s wigwam. In Terrydactyland, look behind Mumbo’s Skull and up the mountain passage beside Humba’s wigwam. Grunty Industries hides one behind the pipe near the second-floor wigwam and another on stacked boxes in the third-floor Packing Room near Mumbo’s area. The latter rewards returning with Split-up and Kazooie’s Leg Spring so she can reach the elevated boxes. Hailfire Peaks spreads its pair across both climates: one is on the grounds by the Lava House below Mumbo’s route, and the other occupies an icy seaside ledge reached by following the wall near Humba’s side of the mountain. Cloud Cuckooland puts both in water, one in the small raised pool inside the Central Cavern and the other in the outside pool connected to it, where George Ice Cube is found. Its two Mumbo Skulls do not imply a third ordinary Glowbo: one contains the real shaman and the other the impostor Mingy Jongo. The extra ordinary creature outside the eight main worlds is on the Cliff Top of the Isle o’ Hags. Take the steps beside the entrance to Jolly Roger’s Lagoon, press the switch to extend the bridge to the Hailfire Peaks entrance building, then climb the vine at the back to its roof. That Glowbo provides a nearby payment for the Cliff Top Mumbo, whose Heal spell is needed after bringing the sick dinosaur from Terrydactyland to the local station on Chuffy. All seventeen remain ordinary payments, even when their hiding places demand more work than the first pair.
The Mega-Glowbo and Dragon Kazooie
The Mega-Glowbo is a much larger specimen reserved for the special Humba Wumba in Pine Grove, outside Witchyworld. She will not activate that wigwam with an ordinary Glowbo, and the Mega-Glowbo cannot be substituted for a normal payment elsewhere. Collecting it requires both the Ice Key and Talon Torpedo, which Jamjars teaches in Jolly Roger’s Lagoon. On Nintendo 64, the Key comes from the Banjo-Kazooie Game Pak hidden in a cave at Jinjo Village: Grip Grab is needed to follow the ledge leading to it, and breaking the Game Pak releases the item. In the Xbox version, the Key is collected in Wozza’s Cave in Banjo-Kazooie and carried into Tooie through Stop ’n’ Swop on the same player profile. With those preparations complete, enter Waterfall Cavern in Glitter Gulch Mine, dive into the water and use Talon Torpedo on the submerged boulder marked with Kazooie’s face. The passage behind it leads into an isolated icy cavern belonging to Hailfire Peaks. Approaching the enormous ice safe with the Key opens it, exposing the Mega-Glowbo for collection. This entrance is reached from the mine rather than by exploring the ordinary paths around Hailfire Peaks’ icy side. Return to Pine Grove, give the creature to Humba and enter her pool. Banjo appears unchanged, but Kazooie emerges from his backpack as Dragon Kazooie, with fire breath and an unlimited supply of Fire Eggs. The player can keep the form while continuing the adventure or return to the pool to restore the ordinary breegull without finding another Mega-Glowbo. The complete route and platform differences are covered in the Dragon Kazooie guide. The ordinary services and this special unlock are separate parts of the collection, even though both are based on giving a magical creature to a shaman. Unused location text also includes the name Glowbo Cave, but that name does not establish another playable cave or confirm additional transformations beyond the released game.
Glowbos in Banjo-Pilot
In Banjo-Pilot, Glowbos create opportunities to gain speed around particular courses. They first have to be unlocked through Cheato, who sells purple and green Glowbos separately for different modes. The Grand Prix purchases cost 150 Cheato Pages for purple and 250 for green. The Jiggy Challenge versions have the same respective prices, but become available after winning the Beehive Cup in Bottles GP. The Time Trial versions also cost 150 and 250 pages and require beating a lap record and a track record before purchasing them. Buying a colour for Grand Prix does not automatically buy its matching option for every other mode. Once the appropriate option is active, look for a Glowbo beside the racing line and shoot it with the aircraft’s ordinary gun. A purple Glowbo reveals a purple speed ring; passing through it leads into a short sequence of further rings, with the chain varying between courses and reaching four on some routes. The player must follow the revealed line accurately to gain the full benefit, as missing an intermediate ring breaks the opportunity to continue the sequence. These rings last only a short time, so shooting the creature and carrying on elsewhere will not leave a permanent shortcut waiting for the next lap. A green Glowbo instead creates a yellow-and-black ring that puts the aircraft into a protected autopilot boost through a section of the track. This takes over the turning while the plane moves quickly along the route, rather than promising an automatic journey around an entire lap. It is useful to line up for the entry ring before firing, especially when the creature is positioned away from the main racing line or just before a corner. Unlike their role in Tooie, these Glowbos are shot to reveal a racing aid; they are not caught, carried to a shaman or exchanged for a transformation.
The Glowbo in Nuts & Bolts
A Glowbo becomes a lost object in the yellow Jinjo’s Fetch challenge in Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. The challenge takes place in Nutty Acres Act 3, which requires three Jiggies to enter. The host stands near Mumbo’s Nuts and asks Banjo and Kazooie to recover the Glowbo he calls his friend, explaining that it has ended up in the water near the volcano. The creature lies submerged in the small pond at the volcano’s base. Banjo must retrieve it from the water, place it in a vehicle with room for the cargo, and return it to the Jinjo. The trolley is already suitable for carrying an object, so this does not require an elaborate purpose-built machine, although keeping the load secure while crossing the uneven ground makes the return easier. Here the Glowbo is a static cargo object rather than a hopping collectible added to the player’s magic inventory. Bringing it back completes the Fetch objective and earns a yellow Jinjo Token, which can be used in Jinjo Bingo for the board’s Note and vehicle-part rewards. It is separate from an ordinary Jiggy challenge and does not have a Trophy Thomas award merely because it is timed. Another connection to this game comes through the Xbox Stop ’n’ Swop rewards: completing Tooie’s Mega-Glowbo and Dragon Kazooie unlock provides the AA-gun bonus blueprint when used with L.O.G.’s Lost Challenges. That blueprint belongs to the linked-game bonus system, while the Glowbo carried through Nutty Acres belongs to the Jinjo’s local Fetch mission.
