The Mouse is the first of four transformations available from Mumbo Jumbo in Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty’s Revenge. Banjo becomes a small brown mouse with large rounded ears, a pointed muzzle and a thin tail, still wearing his yellow shorts and blue backpack. Its small body fits through holes that the bear cannot enter, while its teeth cut the ropes and chains used in several collectible puzzles. Banjo receives the form during Cliff Farm, before rescuing Kazooie, and can select it again at Mumbo’s Pads in later worlds. Unlocking it requires the Mumbo Token left by the first Klungo battle. Learn the Roll Attack from Bozzeye in Farm Heights, enter Bluff Barn and roll into the switch beside the inactive Witchy Warp. The activated pad leads to Klungo’s room; defeat him and collect both the Jiggy and token before returning to the farm. Take the token to Mumbo’s Pad behind the barn, speak to the shaman and accept his offer to transform. On the central coloured pad, choose Mouse rather than Bear. Move with the Control Pad, press A to jump and hold B while stationary beside a suitable target to Nibble. The Mouse runs faster than ordinary Banjo, but Nibble cannot hurt enemies: it is the only one of this game’s four forms without a damaging attack. Passing guards and timing jumps therefore remain necessary even after the teeth have removed an obstruction. Contact with water is fatal, including the farm’s ordinary water and the polluted harbor, so the smaller form cannot follow a swimming route used by the bear. Return to Mumbo and choose Bear to regain the normal abilities. The unlocked Mouse remains on later transformation menus without another payment for the same spell, although attempting to leave a world while transformed sends Banjo back to Mumbo’s Pad. Choose the form locally instead of trying to carry it through Spiral Mountain between worlds.
The Rafters and Crag Mill in Cliff Farm
Two interiors in Cliff Farm introduce the Mouse’s different uses. Return to Bluff Barn and avoid the Gruntling patrolling its passage. A small opening near the stacked barrels at the rear admits the Mouse into The Rafters. Collect the three Musical Notes and pass through the gap in the inner mesh fence to reach an orange Jinjo. This is an access puzzle solved by size; there is no rope to chew before entering the rafters. The Jinjo counts toward the farm’s five rescues, with their shared Jiggy supplied at the Jinjo Oracle once all five are safe. Crag Mill, reached through the small hole in its door in Farm Heights, instead combines the Mouse’s size with Nibble. Take the Notes and Hollow Honeycomb on the upper entrance level, then drop through the opening in the mesh floor. Follow the lower passage around the mill’s gears and collect the Notes along it before taking the small passage into the adjoining section. Near the spilled flour is a red-handled lever held in place by a rope. Nibble through that restraint to release the lever and start the moving lift; its handle changes to green. Reach the lift through the opening just above the lever and board it when it is low, or move into its shadow so the rising platform picks the Mouse up. At the top, step or jump onto the ledge containing the Jiggy. There are nine Notes across the mill’s connected levels as well as the Hollow Honeycomb, so check both the entry platform and the passages below the mesh before leaving. Retrace the small passages to the entrance, then return to Mumbo when the remaining farm errands require the bear’s attacks or swimming.
Freeing the Breegulls in Quarry Heights
The next major use is in Breegull Beach, where a white Breegull stands near the tiny entrance to Quarry Heights. Six of her friends have been chained up to work for Gruntilda. Neither she nor Banjo can fit into the opening, so visit the nearby Mumbo’s Pad and choose the Mouse already unlocked at Cliff Farm. Breegull Beach does not award a new transformation token for this rescue. Return to the white bird and enter the small passage beside her. Inside, use Nibble at the chains around each prisoner; speaking to them or merely approaching does not remove the restraints. Free the two Breegulls in the initial section before crossing the rope bridge to the third, beneath a palm tree. Descend the rocky ledges on the far side and check the lower corner for the yellow Jinjo, then work back up the small ledges to the fourth prisoner. Drop toward the southern path and find the fifth beneath the bridge, beside the wire fence. The final Breegull is near the path returning to the entrance. Gruntlings patrol these narrow routes and Whiplashes obstruct some of the ledges, so wait for a safe opening rather than trying to defeat them with Nibble. Collect the Notes along both the high paths and the lower passages before taking the exit beside the last prisoner. Once all six chains have been broken, return to the white Breegull outside to receive a Jiggy. The yellow Jinjo contributes to Breegull Beach’s separate all-five Oracle reward. Quarry Heights is also distinct from Grunty’s Quarry, where the normal bear later reaches the Witch’s Keep and fights to recover Kazooie. Freeing these six workers does not itself release her from Mecha-Grunty’s custody. Change back at Mumbo before continuing along that larger quarry route.
Spillerston’s Garden and Castoffs Castle
In Spiller’s Harbor, the local Mumbo’s Pad offers the Mouse independently of the later Octopus unlock. First visit Spillerston, reached by the stairs behind Mr. Drippy’s van. Near its entrance, a small gap beneath the wrought-iron fence leads into a garden the bear cannot enter. Follow the enclosed paths to collect two Notes, a black Jinjo and a Hollow Honeycomb. Whiplashes occupy this area, including one in front of the Jinjo; wait for its movement and slip past the edge of its reach rather than expecting Nibble to remove it. Leave through the same fence gap and return to the harbor. The second destination is Bilge Haven, to the left of the main entrance, where the sandcastle’s tiny doorway leads into Castoffs Castle. Its interior has a lower maze and an elevated network of bridges made among discarded containers and ice-pop sticks. Four rope-held levers on the lower floor raise the blue sections of that upper route. Search the branch near the drink lid in the northern part of the maze, the far northeastern branch, the southwestern path beyond the red drinks can and the southeastern pocket beside the tilted milk carton. Nibble each lever’s rope and watch its bridge rise before moving on. Collect the loose Notes and Note Nest while searching these lower passages, including the branches beneath the upper bridges. Once the four links are in place, climb the sloping milk carton to reach the upper level. Follow the connected bridges and stick paths toward the upper-left corner for another black Jinjo, then retrace the junctions and take the remaining raised route to the Jiggy. These are separate pickups: the castle’s Jiggy is not awarded simply for collecting its Jinjo. Drop back to the lower maze and find the entrance when both have been collected. The two Mouse-accessible Jinjos, in the garden and castle, join the harbor’s other three rescues for the reward at its Jinjo Oracle. The Hollow Honeycomb is in the fenced garden, not an additional prize created by the castle levers. Keep to the shore throughout these visits, since a fall into Bilge Haven’s oily water defeats the Mouse immediately. Return to Mumbo for Bear or Octopus before tackling the harbor’s swimming and pipe routes.
Later Access and Development
The Mouse also fits into the opened ice structure near Mumbo’s Pad in Freezing Furnace, but opening that route is a job for the Candle. The Candle lights the explosive fuse outside the ice and can enter the resulting passage to collect its blue Jinjo itself. Using the Mouse after the opening exists is therefore an optional access possibility, not another Mouse-only Jiggy or a substitute for the ignition step. The larger pattern across the adventure is to choose an earlier form again at the world’s own Mumbo Pad when its particular ability is needed. A new world’s advertised transformation does not remove the earlier choices: Spiller’s Harbor’s Octopus and Freezing Furnace’s Tank join the menu rather than replacing Mouse. This reusable selection system also shaped the levels during development. In a retrospective interview, Rare developer Gavin Hood explained that the team had planned more puzzles using the Mouse’s ability to enter tight spaces and gnaw through obstacles. Some were left out so that the other transformations would also receive attention. That account concerns additional planned uses of the existing abilities; Nibble remains the released form’s B-button action. It does not give the Mouse a hidden attack or a further shrinking move to unlock after completing its quests.
