The Breegulls are the bird inhabitants of Breegull Beach in Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty’s Revenge, sharing their species with Kazooie. The island population includes pink birds imprisoned in Gruntilda’s quarry and white Breegulls who speak to Banjo about the captives and the traditions of Breegull Peak. One asks for help freeing six chained friends, beginning a rescue that requires Mumbo’s Mouse transformation. Another presents a ceremonial challenge to collect twenty Glow Grubs, before admitting that the supposedly ancient test will also provide a meal. These encounters reveal the effects of Gruntilda’s work on the island and offer two separate Jiggies. They also place Kazooie alongside other members of her own species after her rescue from Mecha-Grunty.
White, Pink and Red-Crested Breegulls
The islanders expand the Breegull species beyond the familiar red-crested Kazooie. Pink Breegulls are the prisoners chained in the quarry, while white birds appear in the speaking roles beside its small entrance and on Breegull Peak. The peak encounter emphasizes age and tradition through the elder’s ceremonial language, while the bird outside Quarry Heights is concerned with freeing friends. Kazooie’s red crest and colouring distinguish her from both groups. Her continued appearances in later games, including Banjo-Pilot and Nuts & Bolts, represent the wider species; the white and pink islanders receive their own quest roles in Grunty’s Revenge. The encounters do not supply personal names or a family tree connecting the individual birds.
Gruntilda’s Quarry and the Captive Birds
Gruntilda has taken over the island’s quarry and put the pink Breegulls to work. Mr. Ripovski explains that stone blocks are being cut for her new castle, while the white bird near the small quarry entrance wants to break the chains holding fellow Breegulls. The obstacle is access: the passage is too small for the waiting bird or ordinary Banjo. The Jinjo Oracle suggests that the Ancient Breegulls have escaped this forced labour because they are too old for Gruntilda to use. That is the Oracle’s assessment of the situation. The immediate task is to enter Quarry Heights in a smaller form, release all six prisoners and return to the bird waiting outside. Their rescue is separate from confronting Mecha-Grunty to release Kazooie.
Getting Mouse Banjo into Quarry Heights
First unlock the Mouse Form by defeating Klungo in Cliff Farm and bringing the resulting Mumbo Totem to Mumbo Jumbo. Grunty’s Revenge allows an unlocked transformation to be selected in other worlds, so there is no second beach token to find for this form. After opening Breegull Beach with six Jiggies at Jiggywiggy’s Temple, visit Mumbo Jumbo at his Pad there and choose the Mouse. Return left to the white Breegull and enter the small opening beside the bird. Inside Quarry Heights, use B to nibble through the prisoners’ chains. The Mouse’s small size solves the entrance problem, but its nibble does not provide ordinary combat protection against the patrols. Watch the Gruntlings and move past while their routes leave space. This rescue can be completed before Kazooie is freed, using Banjo’s transformation rather than her later movement abilities.
Freeing the First Three Prisoners
From the Quarry Heights entrance, follow the lower route towards the first patrolling Gruntling, wait for it to move away and head left towards the first captive. Nibble through the chain, then continue south to the second Breegull below that position. After freeing this bird, follow the path to the right and cross the rope bridge. The third prisoner waits beneath a palm tree on the far side. Approach the chain carefully so that nibbling does not leave the Mouse exposed to the nearby patrol or the edge of the platform. These three positions cover the initial ledges and the far side of the bridge. Freeing them is only half the task, since more captives occupy the lower paths and the raised area reached from the opposite side.
The Last Three Captives and the Rescue Reward
After the palm-tree prisoner, descend the rocky ledges to the sandy corner, where a yellow Jinjo can also be found. Move left to the ascending ledges, avoiding the Whiplash, and climb onto the grassy area. Follow it right to the fourth captive and chew through the chain. Drop south through the lower paths, then continue left to the narrow sandy route beneath the rope bridge. The fifth Breegull is in the bridge’s shadow beside the barbed-wire fence. Beyond the patrolling Gruntling, continue north to find the final prisoner on the left, close to the return route. Once all six are free, head through the northern exit to the white bird outside. The grateful Breegull supplies the rescue Jiggy and continues to thank Banjo afterwards. Return to Mumbo when ready to change back for the island’s other tasks.
Meeting the Elder on Breegull Peak
The second Breegull quest takes the rescued bear and bird up to Breegull Peak. Use Climbing, taught by Bozzeye in Cliff Farm at 40 Musical Notes, to ascend the vines and ledges leading to the peak. His Talon Trot lesson requires 140 Musical Notes. Hold L and press R to let Kazooie carry Banjo up the steep slope beyond the lesson. The white elder at the top addresses Kazooie and announces an extremely ancient test of the Ancient Breegulls, with the title of Breegull Champion held out as the achievement. Kazooie makes a joke about the speaker’s age, while Banjo asks what the test involves. The elaborate explanation eventually gives way to a simpler bargain: retrieve twenty Glow Grubs from the slide and receive a Jiggy. The elder is hungry, making the ceremonial challenge a request for food as well as a test of the visitors’ ability.
Collecting Twenty Glow Grubs on Grubby Chute
Climb the vines above the elder to reach the temple at the summit. Its slide is called the Slippery Slide of Iggy Twiggy in the conversation and Grubby Chute in the minigame menu. Enter to begin the descent and use the Control Pad to steer left and right into the Glow Grubs. All twenty are needed for the promised reward. Springy spikes line parts of the course, and the grubs can occupy the openings between them, so choose the clear route while keeping the next collectible in view. A collision can knock Banjo out of position and spoil the approach to a grub. Some stretches offer separate paths around the spikes, making early steering more useful than trying to correct after reaching the obstacle. If the full set has not been gathered by the bottom, make another attempt at the slide.
The Slide Reward and Later Replays
A successful twenty-grub descent ends back on the main beach, with the Jiggy waiting near the slide’s lower exit. The elder’s completion dialogue thanks the visitors for the meal and confirms the promised reward. This is the food-delivery Jiggy, distinct from the one earned by releasing the six quarry prisoners. The elder also welcomes further runs of the slide, prompting Kazooie to comment on the prospect of obtaining more easy food. Grubby Chute is additionally one of the bonus minigames available through the N. Kreditz Arcade in Spillerston. Gold coins gathered during the ending-credits slide unlock the arcade games, providing another way to revisit the challenge after its original encounter. Those replays are separate from earning the main adventure’s first reward for the elder.
