Tank Banjo

Tank Banjo banner placeholder

Tank Banjo is the fourth and final transformation unlocked in Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty’s Revenge. Mumbo Jumbo changes Banjo into a small yellow-tan armoured vehicle with grey caterpillar tracks, a cannon projecting from its face and the familiar blue backpack visible behind the body. Move with the Control Pad and press B for Tank Shot, which launches a powerful round in the direction Banjo faces. The cannon destroys ordinary enemies and breaks the heavy grey Tank Doors marked with a target. Its ammunition is unlimited and does not use Kazooie’s Egg stock. The form also crosses green chemical floors and noxious terrain safely, opening routes in Freezing Furnace’s factory and a later return visit to Bad Magic Bayou. Its weight and tracks come with a major restriction: the Tank cannot jump. Follow ramps and connected ground, take care at platform corners and keep clear of water, lava and the bayou’s pools, since falling into those liquids is fatal. Chemical-floor resistance does not make those separate hazards safe. The Blizzard outside Mumbo’s Pad cannot pull the Tank about as it does lighter forms, but touching the enemy still causes damage. Both of the Tank’s dedicated Jiggy courses therefore depend on accurate movement across connected platforms, with no jump available to recover from a wrong turn. Unlock the spell using the Mumbo Token from Klungo’s third world battle, then select Tank on Mumbo’s central coloured pad. Once acquired, it remains on the transformation menu at other Pads without another payment for the same form. Return to Mumbo and choose Bear to regain the duo’s normal moves or leave the world. For the frozen-water routes, choose Octopus instead. Unseen64’s report on the cancelled Game Boy Color Grunty’s Curse describes an earlier Tank proposal with Egg projectiles and separate aiming controls; these are development plans, not additional commands for the released GBA Tank.

Unlocking the Tank in Freezing Furnace

The token is obtained inside Freezing Furnace while playing as the ordinary bear and bird. Bozzeye’s Fire Egg lesson costs four hundred and seventy Notes; use a Fire Egg in the outdoor toll to activate the lift leading to the upper frozen area and Mumbo’s Pad. Continue through the world to the fiery factory entrance. In this game, Grunty Industries is part of Freezing Furnace, rather than the separate factory world of Banjo-Tooie. Inside, reach the lava-side switch, activate it with Pack Whack and board the moving platform. Jump over the low pipe as the platform passes underneath it, then face the northern wall in Egg Firing mode. Fire Ice Eggs into both tolls along that wall to remove the flames blocking the doorway in the giant robot. Ride around again as necessary to reach its entrance. The corridor inside is lined with Livewires; use the Wonderwing Pad to protect the duo while running through to the Witchy Warp at the far end. That warp leads to Klungo in his frozen laboratory. Dodge his thrown vials and wait for him to lower his shield and turn invisible, then find and strike him with Rat-a-tat Rap. The slippery floor makes positioning harder, while the Germuloids released between phases must be shaken off by moving the Control Pad rapidly from side to side. Three successful attacks drive Klungo away. Collect both the Jiggy and the Mumbo Token awarded after the fight, then leave the factory and return to Mumbo’s Pad in the frozen area. Give the shaman the token and choose Tank. The heavy target doors are objectives for the newly unlocked form; they are not the route needed to obtain its token. This is also not Klungo’s final appearance, since he is fought again during the endgame sequence in Grunty’s Stronghold.

The Chemical Floor and Lava Jetty

Leave Mumbo’s Pad as the Tank and follow the ground around the large ice structure to the grey door marked with a target. Face it and fire Tank Shot to open a route into the lower part of Grunty Industries. The green chemical floor inside can be crossed safely in this form. Search it for four Musical Notes and a blue Jinjo, then shoot the second Tank Door at the far side of the area to enter Lava Jetty. This room contains twenty-two tiles that collapse after the Tank rolls over them. Every tile must be used before Banjo reaches the opposite landing, where the Jiggy appears. Plan the route before leaving the entrance, since the Tank cannot jump a gap or cross back over a tile that has disappeared. Starting on the first tile at the bottom, move up one tile, left two and up two. Go right two, down one and right one, then up two, right one and up one. Cross left four tiles, turn up one and finish by moving right three across the upper row toward the far landing. These directions count moves between adjacent tiles, rather than including the tile already beneath the Tank. They cover the full chain once, bringing the displayed remaining-tile count from twenty-two to zero. Keep to each tile’s centre when turning so a diagonal movement does not cut across the lava at a corner. On reaching the solid landing, collect the Jiggy and leave through the exit, which returns to the chemical area. Shoot open the outward target door when needed and follow the frozen ground back to Mumbo. The blue Jinjo is a separate part of the world’s five-Jinjo collection; after the other four rescues, restore the ordinary duo and visit the Jinjo Oracle among the crates in Furnace Stores for that reward. Other factory errands need the bear and bird’s jumping, Egg firing and switches, so change forms before continuing onto raised machinery.

Returning to Tread-Careful Copse

A further Tank Door waits in Bad Magic Bayou, making this spell necessary for one of the earlier world’s Jiggies. Return after obtaining the Freezing Furnace token and travel through the Vapor Scrubs as the ordinary duo to reach Mumbo’s Pad beyond it. The poisonous crossing has gaps that require jumping, so the Tank should be selected locally once that approach is complete. Leave Mumbo’s Pad, follow the boardwalk south and take the ramp to the left. Shoot the Stinglash blocking the way and look north for the target door partly concealed by the cliff and vegetation. Tank Shot opens the entrance to Tread-Careful Copse. Inside, twenty collapsing tiles lead across the swamp to a far landing. As in Lava Jetty, every tile must disappear before the reward is earned, and falling off the route into the bog defeats the Tank. Clear the bends nearest the entrance first, taking the lower loop before following the long middle row to the left. At its far end, turn upward and work around the upper bend toward the landing on the right. Keep moving onto intact adjacent tiles and watch the remaining-tile counter: reaching the far side with any tiles left does not finish the challenge. The floor falls away behind Banjo, so each branch needs to be completed before committing to the next stretch. Collect the Jiggy that appears at the exit and continue through the opening beyond it. Banjo returns to the area beside Mumbo’s Pad, where Bear can be selected for the journey out through Vapor Scrubs. This reward is available only after the Tank has been unlocked in the later world, but it need not be the final Jiggy collected in the entire game. The nearby mansion’s dark passages and candle-lighting puzzle belong to Candle Banjo and remain separate from this door and tile course.
