Octopus Banjo

Octopus Banjo banner placeholder

Octopus Banjo is the third of four transformations unlocked in Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty’s Revenge. Mumbo Jumbo turns Banjo into a pink octopus with a rounded head and spreading tentacles, retaining his yellow shorts and blue backpack. The form swims through the polluted water of Spiller’s Harbor and the icy water of Freezing Furnace without the damage suffered by the ordinary bear. It also swims faster and jumps higher from the water, allowing it to reach isolated boats, pillars and cave mouths. Move with the Control Pad, jump with A and press B to use Water Jet. This attack spits small bursts of water both on land and while swimming, providing a way to destroy mines and the tentacled enemies obstructing the watercourses. It does not consume Kazooie’s Egg ammunition. To obtain the spell, first open Spiller’s Harbor with twenty-four Jiggies and learn Ice Eggs from Bozzeye for four hundred and ten Notes. At the lighthouse, use the Shock Spring pads to reach the Ice Egg toll and fire one Ice Egg into it. The activated Witchy Warp leads to Mecha-Grunty’s battle on the pier. Defeat her and collect the Jiggy and Mumbo Token left behind, then return to Mumbo’s Pad up the stairs near the harbor entrance. Speak to Mumbo, accept his offer and select Octopus on the central coloured pad. Earlier forms remain available, and the Octopus can be selected again at later Pads without paying another token for the same spell. Its water resistance does not protect against enemy contact: mines, swinging tentacles and attached Germuloids remain dangerous. Shake the Control Pad rapidly from side to side to remove a Germuloid. Return to Mumbo and choose Bear when the next task needs Kazooie’s moves or the world exit; trying to leave a world while transformed sends Banjo back to the Pad.

Collectibles and Squit in Spiller’s Harbor

Several harbor collectibles become reachable as soon as the Octopus is unlocked. Search the wide pipe below the stairs leading to Mumbo’s Pad for a Hollow Honeycomb, then use the water to explore the boats and offshore platforms. A Jiggy stands on a tall pillar out in the polluted sea; swim to its base and jump directly from the water onto its top. The increased water jump also reaches the boat carrying one of the harbor’s black Jinjos. Collect the Silver Coin on another boat when assembling Mr. Ripovski’s set of five for his additional challenge. The coin, Jinjo and pillar Jiggy are separate pickups, so visiting one boat does not finish the offshore search. One of Mrs. Squitter’s missing children, Squit, is also stranded on a boat. His rescue connects the Octopus route with an errand completed by the ordinary duo. First deal with the Maggies troubling Mr. Drippy’s ice-cream van, using Rat-a-tat Rap, and speak to Drippy to obtain the ice cream. Take it to the boat as the Octopus and speak to Squit; the food persuades him to return to his mother. Mrs. Squitter’s Jiggy requires both children to be home, so the toy-UFO errand for the other Squit must also be completed before collecting her reward. Check the nearby landing places for Musical Notes while moving between these objectives, keeping enough distance from a mine to destroy it with Water Jet before approaching. The Octopus fits the harbor’s broad water pipes, but the tiny openings in Spillerston’s garden fence and the sandcastle belong to the Mouse route. Change forms at Mumbo for those enclosed areas, which contain further Jinjos, a Honeycomb and the Castoffs Castle puzzle. Finish the water errands before making that change, since a Mouse cannot survive a fall into the same polluted sea.

The Current and Pipes of Mucky Passage

Mucky Passage is the harbor’s longer Octopus course, entered through the partly submerged pipe at the far side of the water. Swim into its mouth after transforming and prepare for a current that continually carries Banjo to the right. Press left on the Control Pad to resist that movement when lining up a jump or approaching a collectible. The current remains active while enemies and pipework obstruct the route, so allowing it to carry the Octopus forward unchecked can push it into a mine or past a landing. Use Water Jet to clear Shrapnels and Green Whiplashes ahead, then jump the pipe obstacles rather than trying to swim through their solid sections. The water itself is safe for this form, but the creatures occupying it still cost health on contact. Collect the Notes along the passage as the route opens, using the jump from the water to reach raised sections and steering back against the current when a pickup needs a more careful approach. Water Jet can be fired repeatedly without stopping to refill an Egg supply, making it useful for clearing the next cluster before entering its reach. Near the end, jump from the water onto the ledge containing the Jiggy and collect it before taking the exit. The passage brings Banjo back to the harbor behind Mr. Drippy’s van, from where the stairs and shore lead back toward Mumbo. This course and the sea pillar provide two direct Octopus Jiggies in Spiller’s Harbor; Squit’s rescue and the boat Jinjo contribute to their own larger rewards. The Octopus’s immunity concerns polluted water, while its high jump and ranged attack are what allow the complete route through the passage’s obstacles.

Freezing Furnace and Chilly Chasm

The same spell has further uses in Freezing Furnace, before its local Tank transformation has been unlocked. Reach Mumbo’s Pad in the northwestern frozen area and select the Octopus already obtained at the harbor. Leave the Pad, avoid the Blizzard outside and enter the stream below the horizontal pipes. Follow the water south to the frozen pillar carrying a Hollow Honeycomb, jumping from the water to collect it. Nearby islands hold further Notes. Continue around the shoreline toward the factory approach and search the islands to its north: beyond the island with a Stinglash and three Notes is a lone island holding a blue Jinjo. Use Water Jet to clear the tentacle before crossing. This rescue contributes to Freezing Furnace’s set of five, whose shared Jiggy is collected from the Jinjo Oracle in Furnace Stores. For the Octopus’s own Jiggy, find the cave mouth in the icy rock face leading to Chilly Chasm. The passage again has a strong current toward the right, with Stinglashes and Shrapnels occupying the channels. Resist the flow with left on the Control Pad, shoot ahead with B and use A to reach the platforms above the water. Partway through, jump onto the ledge containing a Note Nest, then cross the narrow raised platform for two loose Notes and another nest before returning to the channel. Clear the tentacles blocking the later gaps and continue past the remaining mines. At the far end, jump onto the landing for the Jiggy and collect the three Notes by the exit. Outside, follow the icy water left and north to the alcove reached with another water jump; its passage returns to the high ice near Mumbo’s Pad, with two more Notes along the structure. Return to Mumbo for Bear or another spell when these routes are finished. The Octopus was also planned for the cancelled Game Boy Color predecessor, Grunty’s Curse. An Unseen64 archival report describes a proposed double-tap swimming boost, but that proposal is separate from the released GBA controls.
