The Great Rampo

The Great Rampo banner placeholder

The Great Rampo is the stone-headed boss of Tribalstack Tropics in Yooka-Laylee and Yooka-Replaylee. Introduced as the Ancient Angular Stone Bloke, he occupies the summit of Rampo’s Temple, where a steep ramp separates visitors from his mouth. His head is assembled from large, angular pieces of masonry, with heavy carved eyebrows above a single orange eye. Vines and vegetation cover parts of the stonework, while his broad mouth exposes the teeth that become the targets during the fight. His name suits both the inclined approach and the temple he guards. Rampo objects to uninvited guests and mistakes Yooka and Laylee for door-to-door salespeople. He announces that he has no need for double-glazed windows, then dismisses Yooka’s explanation that they have come for a Pagie. To Rampo, their conversations with the island’s other inhabitants are further evidence of a sales campaign. He threatens to use his ancient slanty powers against the supposed glass peddlers and starts sending obstacles down the slope. His complaints about a ruined smile and overdue dental payments continue that exchange as the pair break his teeth. The original fight uses Uphill Battle, composed by Grant Kirkhope. Rampo also appears in Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, where his stone face blocks an underground watercourse rather than presiding over another uphill boss battle. Across these appearances, reaching his vulnerable mouth is the central problem, but the methods and consequences differ. The temple encounter awards Pagies, while clearing his cave obstruction restores water needed to change an overworld chapter.

Rampo’s Temple and the Original Uphill Battle

In the original Yooka-Laylee, expand Tribalstack Tropics by paying three Pagies at its Grand Tome before attempting to reach Rampo’s summit. The initial one-Pagie world-opening payment alone does not add the upper temple. From the entrance area, take the rising route around Rampo’s Temple, on the western side of the world. Follow its ramps and platforms past the flame traps, deal with the enemies near the top and cross the wooden bridge leading to the long boss slope. This building is separate from Duke’s Temple, where Trowzer teaches the world’s moves. Reptile Roll, learned earlier in Hivory Towers, provides the speed needed for the ascent. Later, Flappy Flight can shorten the approach, but it is not required to win. The battle has three rounds. Roll uphill through the gaps between the first logs, keeping enough room to adjust direction as the next obstacles appear. A collision can damage the duo and send them tumbling back towards the bottom. Holding the roll position briefly lets a log pass before committing to the next stretch. Near the upper ledge, Rampo breathes fire across the approach. Wait below its reach, then jump onto the mouth platform during the pause and use Tail Twirl to break the exposed teeth. Clearing the first set provokes his winning-smile complaint and a gust that sends the pair back down the ramp. The next ascent uses staggered logs across different lanes, requiring sideways movement as well as forward speed. Break the larger set of replacement teeth when the fire stops, then repeat the climb after the second knockback. In the final round, logs span the width of the ramp, so jump over them instead of looking for a gap at the side. Keep the camera facing uphill to see the next row and land ready for another jump. Butterflies around the lower end provide recovery after mistakes. Breaking the last teeth ends the fight, awarding one Pagie and the Slippery Slope achievement or trophy on supported versions. Rampo remains with his mouth open; an extra attack on his eye can draw the aggressive-salesmanship complaint, but it is not a fourth required round. His temple contains other rewards: the Pirate Treasure sits in a rear-wall opening beneath the upper flame jets, reached by dropping and gliding into the recess, while Lady Leapalot occupies a separate treasure chamber below. Neither belongs to the boss payout. His dislike of door-to-door salesmen also becomes a question in Dr. Quack’s Quack-Fire Quiz.

The Cave and Broken Controller in Impossible Lair

Rampo returns in the overworld near Chapter 5, Gasping Glade, where his position inside a cave prevents water from reaching the channel outside. Getting to him is part of a sequence of keys, gates and switches. Buy the caged key north of the chapter book for 1,000 Quills and use it to enter the cave. Defeat the blue enemies inside to release another key from their chest, then unlock the next gate and climb towards the stone face. A key beside Rampo opens the route farther into the cave, but the green gate by the Blastberry bush still needs its matching key. Continue along the available path and swim through the low tunnel beneath the stone ledges to reach the other side of the pools. Follow the connecting passage to the wooden bridge and pick up a throwable rock. Aim it across the water at the lever, which lowers the intervening platforms and makes the green key accessible. Carry that key back to the matching gate, open it and collect a Blastberry from the bush beyond. Throw the explosive fruit at Rampo to break the blockage and release the water. He complains about the damage to his mouth and his ability to enjoy boiled sweets, continuing the dental joke from the first game. The space he was blocking also contains the Broken Controller Tonic. Pick it up after the obstruction has been cleared; discovering it adds it to the Tonic menu, where a further 500 Quills purchases it for use. Its effect reverses paired controls, making ordinary movement and actions more difficult. The cleared watercourse has a separate purpose outside the cave. Return to the dam lever beside the Chapter 5 book and operate it to redirect the restored flow over the book. Watering it changes the chapter to Gasping Glade - Grown, opening the altered version of the level and its own collectibles and Beettalion rescue. Collecting the Tonic alone does not operate that outside lever, so finish the water-routing step when unlocking the grown chapter. Unlike Rampo’s first appearance, this encounter has no repeated log climbs, replacement tooth sets or boss Pagie. The challenge is obtaining the correct keys and ammunition, then using the resulting water supply to change the surrounding overworld.

Rampo’s Rampagie in Yooka-Replaylee

Yooka-Replaylee opens Tribalstack Tropics in its full form, removing the original expansion payment from the route to Rampo. Work up the temple platforms to the summit, using the nearby Mark fast-travel point to shorten a return visit. The challenge is named Rampo’s Rampagie, and the remade encounter gives the stone head a warmer, more detailed masonry surface while retaining his single eye, enormous mouth and sales-pitch misunderstanding. A health bar now shows progress through the fight. Roll up the ramp while reading the next line of logs, then reach the mouth platform and strike the teeth when the fire allows an opening. The opening set has targets on both the upper and lower jaws, and the flame patterns change as the fight progresses. Early in the encounter, a sweeping jet crosses the space in front of the mouth. Watch its direction and jump through the safe opening before attacking. Later rounds introduce two turning fire streams whose paths cross over the upper platform. Time the approach for their movement as well as the incoming logs; arriving at the top does not make the platform safe. Tooth hits remove portions of the health bar, and the early cleared sets still lead to a knockback and another climb. The log patterns develop from gaps that can be steered through into denser diagonal arrangements and full-width rows that must be jumped. Keep rolling between jumps so the duo can regain height rather than sliding into the following obstacle. After the final successful mouth attack, Rampo concedes defeat and the remake awards three Pagies together. A boss-reset prompt allows the cleared challenge to be played again. The original Slippery Slope achievement belongs to the 2017 game, so it is separate from the remake’s reward and challenge-replay system. Other activities around the monument, including the nearby coin route and treasure rewards, remain separate from these three boss Pagies. The later flight ability is still useful for exploring the temple, but the encounter itself is built around rolling, jumping and timing attacks on the mouth.
