Laylee

Laylee banner placeholder

Laylee is a purple bat and one of the two main characters of the Yooka-Laylee series, travelling with her best friend Yooka. She usually rides on his head, holding her wings at his sides when the duo are walking and opening them when an aerial move requires her help. Her most distinctive feature is an oversized red nose, set below large green eyes and between prominent ears. Small fangs, pointed wings and a pale orange-pink underside complete her original design, with similar colouring inside her ears and wing membranes. Yooka-Replaylee later gives her visible purple fur while keeping those recognisable features. Laylee is quick to speak her mind and frequently supplies the sharper half of the pair's conversations. She challenges sales pitches, makes jokes about the characters they meet and prefers a clear reward when someone asks for help. Her interest in treasure and payment is established in the first adventure, where the golden pages of her book appear to offer a way to improve their battered home. Impatience and cheek do not prevent her from sharing Yooka's work: she joins the search for missing people and objects, helps him overcome dangerous terrain and faces Capital B alongside him. Their friendship allows for disagreement, and Yooka will question her claims or try to soften an exchange when she becomes too abrasive. She also talks directly about the game's rules, controls and presentation, making her a frequent source of its jokes about being a platform adventure. Their home is Bat Ship Crazy in Shipwreck Creek, and their travels take them into the Grand Tomes, through Queen Phoebee's kingdom and into several other games. Laylee's wings and sonar have a substantial gameplay role throughout those appearances. Her presence changes what the pair can reach and how they can survive, particularly in the Impossible Lair, where losing contact with her temporarily reduces Yooka's available moves.

Yooka-Laylee

Laylee's book starts the events of Yooka-Laylee. She has been using it as a drinks coaster during the renovation of Bat Ship Crazy, then notices that its pages are gold and considers what it could be worth. Before she and Yooka can make use of that discovery, Capital B's Noveliser 64 draws it towards Hivory Towers. The stolen volume is the One Book, a powerful work whose writing can reshape reality, and its living pages escape the machine as Pagies. Laylee accompanies Yooka after it, turning the effort to recover something from their home into a journey through the factory and five Grand Tome worlds. Her irritation with Trowzer begins early, as his promised help comes with a demand for Quills and another opportunity to sell his services. The pair nevertheless need his lessons to gain the full set of moves, while recovered Pagies open the Tomes and expand the places inside them. Laylee travels through Tribalstack Tropics, Glitterglaze Glacier, Moodymaze Marsh, Capital Cashino and Galleon Galaxy, responding to requests for help with a mixture of suspicion, jokes and interest in the likely reward. Encounters with the knights, Kartos, Rextro and other residents show that she is an active participant in their conversations. She also accompanies the duo through Dr. Quack's quizzes and the battles that stand between them and the missing book. The concluding fight against Capital B depends on their combined skills, including her ability to keep Yooka airborne while they evade attacks and turn the battle against him. Capital B's defeat is followed by Dr. Quack's attempt to claim the situation for himself; the nearby cannon ends that intervention, allowing the duo to reclaim the book. They return to Bat Ship Crazy for a party with their new acquaintances. Throughout the main adventure the player controls the pair together. The optional second player's Bee Team assists with items and hazards, while Laylee continues to perform her part of the first player's moves.

Flight, Sonar and Shared Moves

Laylee's wings initially help the duo cross gaps by slowing their descent, extending the distance Yooka can travel after a jump. Later, Flappy Flight lets her carry him through the air, opening high routes and giving them the freedom to explore spaces that ground movement cannot reach. Sustained flight draws on the shared power meter, making a safe landing and the available energy important parts of using it. Laylee also contributes to Buddy Slam, which drives the pair downwards to break suitable objects, activate switches or strike an enemy below. Her sound-based abilities perform several different jobs. Sonar Shot sends a directed pulse towards a target, waking sleeping totems, revealing certain hidden objects and making the blue Ghost Writer visible for collection. Sonar 'Splosion produces a wider burst around the duo, useful against groups of enemies and obstacles that respond to its stronger sound wave. Sonar Shield creates protection around them, allowing passage through dangerous areas while consuming power. These abilities interact with Yooka's physical moves rather than forming a separate campaign: he handles attacks with his tail, tongue-based actions, rolling and changes to the material properties of his body, while she supplies the sound or wing movement needed for their next action. Trowzer teaches and improves their repertoire as the original adventure progresses, and Power Extenders make demanding combinations easier to sustain. Vendi offers Tonics after their unlock conditions have been met, providing further changes to how the duo play. Laylee also shares the transformations supplied by Dr. Puzz. Recovering a world's Mollycool enables the D.N. Ray to replace their normal bodies and moves with a specialised form: the flower in Tribalstack Tropics, snowplough in Glitterglaze Glacier, piranha shoal in Moodymaze Marsh, helicopter in Capital Cashino and ship in Galleon Galaxy. Each form gives access to tasks designed around its particular abilities, and the ray can turn them back when those tasks are finished. Her usual perch and movement change to suit these transformations, but the same partnership continues to take part in the world's conversations and challenges.

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair

In Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, Laylee helps Queen Phoebee oppose Capital B after he captures the Royal Beettalion Guard with his Hive Mind. The adventure alternates between three-dimensional overworld exploration and side-scrolling Chapter stages, where Laylee's presence becomes part of the duo's health and movement system. A normal hit sends her flying away from Yooka in alarm. He can chase her down and touch her to reunite before she leaves the screen, but failing to reach her means continuing alone until a bell calls her back. Without her, another hit defeats him and he loses the cooperative actions that depend on her wings or assistance. The player therefore has a reason to protect Laylee and a chance to recover from a mistake through movement, rather than simply watching a health meter decrease. Together they can prolong movement through the air, combine a roll with a long jump and use Buddy Slam to reach secrets or operate switches. Checkmate characters mark checkpoints inside Chapters, while bells provide a way to restore the partnership. Their overworld work also changes the stages they enter: moving a Chapter book or altering its surroundings can flood, freeze or otherwise transform the level within. Both versions of each of the twenty Chapters contain a Beettalion rescue, with eight further bees available through secret exits and overworld tasks, bringing the total to forty-eight. Quills pay for discovered Tonics, T.W.I.T. Coins open Trowzer's Paywalls and assistance from the inhabitants creates routes to further areas. Rescued bees surround the duo as a protective shield inside the Impossible Lair, each absorbing a hit before leaving. Laylee and Yooka can attempt the lair before finding them all, making those rescues a way to build protection for its hazards and repeated confrontations with Capital B. During the final battle, the duo seize the Hive Mind and turn its control against its owner. They escape the stronghold as it falls apart and return to the queen with his threat removed. Laylee's place beside Yooka is maintained through both halves of the game, from conversations on the map to the combinations of jumping, rolling and recovery required inside the Chapters.

Yooka-Replaylee

Yooka-Replaylee retells the original story with Laylee and Yooka narrating a book about their adventure. Its opening gives the pair a treasure-hunting expedition, an explanation for their shipwreck and a cave journey in which they find the One Book trapped in a cage. After they free it, the book speaks to them and explains its unusual power. This makes it a conversational companion as well as the object pursued by Capital B and Dr. Quack. Laylee's tendency to enlarge her own contribution is visible in the narration, giving Yooka reasons to interrupt when her version of events becomes particularly flattering to herself. The retelling returns to Hivory Towers and the five Grand Tomes, but their worlds are already expanded and the duo begin with their main moves. Laylee can therefore use her sonar and take part in more combinations from the outset, while special power-up chests govern flight and protection. Three hundred Pagies, revised encounters and new challenges give the pair further reasons to explore returning locations, with a notebook recording activities and Mark's bookmarks helping them travel between places. Vendi's cosmetics and outfits supply new appearances for both characters, including costumes that change Laylee's look alongside Yooka's. Her fur is part of the revised default character model, independently of those optional purchases. The storybook returns during the ending, when she claims an extravagant finishing punch as the decisive moment of the fight. Yooka points out the practical problem of adding yet another move to an already busy controller, then protests as her account turns the celebration into an occasion devoted to her, complete with presents and elaborate luxuries. Laylee defends the embellishment as a way of making the story more interesting. The exchange extends a trait already present in her original dialogue: she knows how to make an event sound impressive, especially when she can place herself at the centre of it. Yooka's objections keep the scene a conversation between friends while the One Book remains with them for whatever they choose to do next.

Guest Appearances and Racing

Laylee accompanies Yooka as part of the playable guest fighter in Brawlout, where her aerial and sound-based moves complement his tongue, tail and charging attacks. Sonar 'Splosion becomes a combat tool, while Flappy Flight helps the pair return to safety after being knocked away from the stage. Their shared selection preserves the same physical partnership used in the platform games, even though the objective is now to defeat other fighters. Mighty Fight Federation also makes the duo a playable team, with an Arcade Mode story, a Grand Tome Chamber arena and music from their own series accompanying the crossover. Volta-X includes Laylee with Yooka when a special mission unlocks him as a crew member for its robot battles. In Demon Turf, Beebz can meet the pair at the top of the Demon King's castle in Forktown, where a cameo conversation replaces their usual starring role. Jitsu Squad includes them as a summoned Mighty Ally, bringing both into the action for an assist attack. Its arcade setting contains a Rextro reference tied to obtaining their summon, and collecting the assist is recognised by the A Famous Duo achievement. Dunk Dunk gives Laylee a playable basketball appearance alongside Yooka, letting the characters take part in its arena matches. Some other crossovers represent the pair through outfits: Brief Battles includes a Yooka-Laylee-themed costume for Violet, and Fall Guys added individual costumes based on the chameleon and bat. Laylee's Fall Guys outfit reproduces her purple appearance and prominent red nose on a contestant, making it a costume representation rather than another chapter in the platform adventures. Super Yooka-Laylee Kart changes her role again by placing her in a kart of her own. She races separately from Yooka, joined by returning characters including Trowzer and Vendi, so the two friends can compete against each other rather than sharing one body of movement. Announced in June 2026, the racer has been shown through demonstrations and public testing but remains an upcoming game. Its announced roster establishes Laylee's participation without providing a finished story outcome or confirming every detail of her eventual racing abilities.

Creation and Other Media

Steve Mayles designed Laylee as the smaller, more outspoken half of Playtonic's new platforming partnership. Choosing a bat gave the team a flying companion whose sonar could support abilities beyond ordinary gliding and jumping, while her size made it possible for her to accompany Yooka visibly throughout the adventure. Early discussions considered carrying her in a backpack, but the design settled on a perch within Yooka's head crest. That arrangement keeps her face and reactions in view during conversations and gives their shared silhouette a different shape from Banjo's backpack and Kazooie's long neck. The pair's names together evoke the ukulele, following the musical association of Banjo and Kazooie. Mayles's stated influences included his earlier Rare character work, Disney and Pokémon, with the new animals chosen partly for the kinds of moves they could perform. Laylee's sharp tongue contrasts with Yooka's more accommodating manner, a difference expressed through the alternating dialogue and their reactions to the same requests. Chris Sutherland supplies their vocal sounds, including the rapid chatter that accompanies her text. The later Yooka-Replaylee redesign adds conspicuous purple fur without replacing the nose, ears and wing shapes that identify her; Playtonic's artists described the fur as one of the most noticeable changes to the new character artwork. Away from the games, D. M. Cumbo's officially licensed graphic novel Yooka-Laylee and the Kracklestone gives the duo a new secret Tome world to explore. Its one-hundred-and-twenty-page story follows their race against Capital B for an artefact believed to grant invincibility. Laylee's partnership with Yooka matters to the outcome because his good intentions become tangled with pride, making him reluctant to rely on others when he needs help. Working with her and their unusual new acquaintances is essential to their attempt to stop Capital B. The book develops the same balance found in the games: Laylee may challenge or tease Yooka, but her abilities and judgement are necessary parts of what they accomplish together. Both characters also appear in the officially licensed Yooka-Laylee Game Decks tabletop game, extending their platforming partnership into a card-based party game.
