Vendi

Vendi banner placeholder

Vendi is the talking vending machine who supplies Yooka and Laylee with Tonics, helping them change their abilities and the way their adventures look and sound. She first appears in Yooka-Laylee and returns in Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair and Yooka-Replaylee, where her business expands to include clothing and complete costumes for the pair. Her bright yellow casing carries a large face with blue eyes, long eyelashes and red lips, while a blue head covering patterned with yellow Tonic symbols and matching blue shoes complete her appearance. The front of her body is marked with Tonic branding, and her name plays on the vending machine that forms her body. Vendi greets customers casually and is happy to explain her stock, although she initially presents herself as an employee following Hivory Towers' rules. Her willingness to overlook the duo's missing identification quickly makes her more helpful than that introduction suggests. Later conversations keep the same mixture of friendly service and company language: she welcomes returning customers, thanks them for purchases and encourages them to keep working. The remake makes that connection explicit by giving her responsibility for company morale and describing her merchandise as an incentive for employees. Across these appearances, Vendi's role grows from selecting a single optional modifier to offering combinations of effects and an extensive wardrobe. She also joins the announced racing roster of Super Yooka-Laylee Kart, appearing as a driver rather than remaining beside a shop. That game is still listed as forthcoming, so her confirmed place in its cast does not yet establish a finished story role or a final set of racing abilities.

Tonics in Yooka-Laylee

In the original adventure, Vendi can be found around Hivory Towers and the five Grand Tome worlds, allowing the pair to change their selected Tonic as they travel. An early encounter is on the outer ledge of Duke's Temple in Tribalstack Tropics, below the area occupied by Trowzer. Before serving the newcomers, she asks for company identification because her refreshments are intended for Hivory Towers employees. Yooka claims that Laylee has eaten his card, and Vendi agrees to overlook the problem on this occasion. Her menu then displays the available Tonics together with the conditions for unlocking those that remain unavailable. These conditions reward progress and particular actions rather than requiring a Quill payment for each Tonic: collecting Pagies or Ghost Writers, finding power upgrades, defeating enemies and performing certain moves can all contribute. Wellard, for example, becomes available after five Pagies and adds an extra unit of health, while Baller reduces the energy used by Reptile Roll after the pair defeat enough enemies. Other choices extend underwater breath, improve an existing ability or help locate remaining collectibles. The menu also includes effects chosen for amusement or an extra challenge, such as altered voices, Yooka wearing trousers and a reduced health allowance. Only one Tonic can be active at a time, so a useful effect for exploring underwater cannot simply be stacked with every other benefit. Returning to Vendi allows the player to exchange that effect for something better suited to the next task, without permanently committing to a particular selection. Unlocking fifteen Tonics is recognised by the Potion Commotion achievement or trophy. The 64-Bit Tonic has a separate release history: it was displayed in the original catalogue before becoming usable through a later free update, reaching PC and Nintendo Switch in April 2019. It applies a deliberately older visual presentation rather than opening a new world or granting another transformation. The individual requirements and effects are collected in the Vendi's Tonics guide.

Tonics in the Impossible Lair

Vendi returns in the Royal Stingdom's overworld, where the pair meet her shortly after passing Trowzer's first paywall. That gate costs one T.W.I.T. Coin, placing the introduction to her new Tonic system near the beginning of the adventure. She gives Yooka and Laylee Catchee without charging them and uses it to explain how the menu works. Catchee helps recover Laylee after the pair take a hit by making her panic less and remain nearby for longer, giving Yooka a better chance to catch her before she disappears. Vendi's advice prompts an irritated response from Laylee, who objects to being treated as someone easily frightened. The remaining Tonics are largely discovered as physical bottles hidden around the overworld, with Planker offering hints towards some concealed locations. Finding a bottle reveals its entry in the Tonic menu, but many effects still require a separate payment in Quills before they can be equipped. Equipment is managed through that pause-menu page, so the pair do not have to walk back to Vendi whenever they want to change a combination. The three ordinary slots allow several effects to work together, and a hidden fourth slot can be obtained through the later secret involving Trowzer's house. Helpful effects include longer periods of invulnerability and extra checkpoints, while harder settings can remove checkpoints or make other parts of a chapter less forgiving. Appearance modifiers change such features as character proportions or the image on screen, allowing a combination to be chosen for its look as well as its practical use. The Quill multiplier shown in the menu is part of the same decision: assistance can reduce the return from a chapter, whereas a more demanding setup can increase it. A Tonic therefore has both an immediate effect and, where a multiplier adjustment applies, a consequence for collecting money to unlock more effects. These selectable chapter modifiers are separate from the Beettalion members that protect the duo during the Impossible Lair itself; collecting a useful Tonic does not add another bee to that shield.

Vendi’s Shop in Yooka-Replaylee

Yooka-Replaylee brings Vendi back to Hivory Towers and the Grand Tomes with a broader shop, named Vendi?s Emporium, and a different way of paying for its contents. The duo gather Q.U.I.D.S throughout the adventure, including money released by breaking Coinelius, and spend those coins on Vendi's merchandise. Quills have a separate purpose at Trowzer's shops, so collecting enough Quills for one of his upgrades does not also pay the price of an item displayed by Vendi. Her introduction retains the joke about employee identification but adds an explanation of her company-morale work, her expanding stock and the use of Tonics to change the conditions under which the pair operate. She initially cites a company manual to justify equipping only one Tonic, then complains about a suspicious individual offering a way around that restriction. The equipment system does allow additional slots through upgrades, ultimately supporting seven simultaneous Tonics instead of the original game's single active effect. Her stock includes practical modifiers, visual filters and playful changes to familiar actions. Greater Glide extends a glide, while effects such as Newbee Blast or Superhero Landing change what happens around a Buddy Slam or landing. Other selections apply a monochrome, comic or retro presentation, alter enemy appearance or leave colourful trails behind the protagonists. Trowzer also sells useful Tonics for Quills, so Vendi's stock is one part of the remake's larger equipment system rather than the only source of modifiers. The two merchants' currencies and inventories make it worthwhile to check both as new areas open. Vendi's clothes occupy a different part of her shop from these effects: buying an outfit changes the duo's appearance, while equipping a Tonic applies its described modifier. They can be considered separately when choosing a new look or preparing for a challenge, and purchasing one does not automatically award every other item shown in her catalogue.

Cosmetics, Outfits and Collector Rewards

The remake's clothing catalogue contains 104 obtainable cosmetics, spread across individual pieces for Yooka and Laylee and complete outfits. Vendi's equipment pages divide the individual stock into Yooka accessories, tops, bottoms and Laylee accessories, alongside a separate outfit selection. Yooka can wear accessories on his head, neck, hands and back, and compatible pieces can be combined. A complete outfit can replace conflicting individual pieces to establish its intended appearance. Trowzer's five world-themed outfits also belong to this wardrobe, although he sells them for the corresponding world's Quills rather than Vendi's Q.U.I.D.S. Other stock appears as the pair reach Pagie milestones or finish specific tasks. A newly unlocked item usually becomes available to buy, which is different from receiving and automatically equipping it. The Shovel Knight outfit, for example, becomes available after both of that guest character's quests have been completed, while recovering all five Pirate Treasures and collecting the full sets of Quills and Pagies each contribute to separate Collector rewards. Spending a total of 10,000 Q.U.I.D.S at Vendi unlocks the Collector's Medallion; that total measures purchases at her shop and does not include money spent on Mark's hints. Vendi's own miniature likenesses unlock another small clothing range, giving her a personal connection to the wardrobe as well as a role behind the counter. The choices include references to earlier appearances, other characters and the wider series, but a costume does not mean that its wearer gains that character's dialogue or quest. Equipping a piece in each of the four individual catalogue categories is recognised by Costume Haul. Prices, colours and the individual unlock conditions are listed in All Cosmetics and Outfits, including the distinction between a progression requirement and the separate cost of purchasing the item once it enters stock.

Miniature Vendis and the Vendetta Challenge

Three miniature Vendis are hidden in Hivory Towers, and each must be kicked to register it towards the Vendetta achievement or trophy. They are small objects modelled after the shopkeeper, rather than extra shop locations, and their hiding places require the player to search beyond the main route through the factory. The first is in the opening interior area, beneath the bridge reached just after entering Hivory Towers, where it rests on a floating barrel. The second is near the route to Glitterglaze Glacier: the pair climb onto a ledge, glide across the gap and search the bushes for a concealed chest, which must be broken to expose the miniature. The third lies farther into the hub, beyond the route past Capital Cashino. A line of upright books can be knocked down with Reptile Rush to form a crossing towards a separate platform. Behind the structure on that platform stands a tall stack of wooden crates; breaking the stack exposes the last miniature at its base. Reaching these areas requires progress through the hub's Pagie Doors, so all three are not available from the first visit to Hivory Towers. Each registered kick contributes to a different clothing unlock in Vendi's shop. The first makes Backpack by Vendi available for 125 Q.U.I.D.S, the second unlocks Shirt by Vendi for 250, and the third unlocks Vendi's Catwalk Creation for 1,000. Those are purchase prices after meeting the conditions, rather than payments required to kick the miniatures. Kicking all three completes Vendetta, while visiting the shop afterwards allows the corresponding clothing to be bought and equipped. The challenge therefore rewards both exploration of the hub and a return to Vendi, rather than ending with the achievement notification alone.
